It was supposed to be capable of curing certain diseases and was widely sought after.‎ A new study at George Mason University in Virginia suggests that the blood of the Komodo dragon, the largest living lizard on the planet, is loaded with chemicals that could be used as antibiotics(抗生素).‎ Komodo dragons, which are native to parts of Indonesia, attack large animals like ‎ water buffalo and deer with a bite to the throat. If their prey (猎物) does not fall immediately, the dragons rarely continue the fight. Instead, they back away and let the mix of mild poison and dozens of disease-causing bacteria found in their saliva(唾液) finish the job. They track their prey until it falls, victim to the poison and the bacteria, and then they can feast without a struggle. The strange thing is Komodo dragons are not affected by the bites of other dragons.‎ This fact interested the researchers who then examined the blood of Komodo dragons and discovered that it possessed qualities that are likely to have important medicinal uses. They recognized 48 elements that had previously been unknown to science and decided to test them in their laboratory. They exposed two types of disease-causing bacteria to eight of the most promising elements found in dragon blood. They found that the growth of both bacteria were strongly affected by seven of the dragon blood elements.‎ These results are important because antibiotic-proof bacteria are an increasing problem in hospitals. Such bacteria are thought to cause 700,000 deaths in hospitals each year around the world. It could be that the work of scientists with Komodo dragon blood could solve this increasingly common problem and their work may prove that dragon’s blood is just as magical as myths suggest.‎ ‎38. If their prey does not fall immediately,”不符。‎ C To me, my parents’ relationship is like a Bollywood movie. Anil, an actor, and Sunita, a former model and fashion designer, met in high school, fell in love, and have been happily married for 35 years. They support one another’s goals and work together to raise their family, regardless of what society demands.‎ When my dad was struggling at the start of his acting career, my mom supported the two of them financially through modeling work, even though she hated being in front of the camera. And when I was five or six, my dad — who was always identified as a feminist(女权主义者)— would help to take the pressure off my mom, which was unheard of at the time and still uncommon.‎ With these kinds of actions, my parents taught us their progressive principles. Watching them, I learned the value of hard work, honesty, tolerance and a strong moral compass, and that what I could accomplish didn’ t have to be limited or decided by my sex.‎ While this may be common knowledge in other parts of the world (in theory if not always in practice), growing up in India, this was revolutionary. Here, many of us worship(敬奉) goddesses and elect women to the most powerful offices, yet women still aren’ t seen as equal to men. ①‎ But at home, there was no difference between my brother and I, between my mom and my dad. Seeing my parents interact as equals, I knew I too could have a voice someday. I felt powerful enough to stand up for myself. ② In the past, this meant walking away from so-called great films where I wasn’t receiving the treatment or pay I felt I deserved, and others that didn’t agree with my worldview. But my upbringing has also led to exciting projects that have the power to spread my values further.‎ Cinema can be a reflection of what society is going through, but once in a while, you can be part of something that can actually change the way people think. ③ My dad and I recently worked on our first film together, “This is How I Felt When I Saw That Girl”, in which he plays my father, and I play his secret lesbian(女同性恋) daughter, trying to find a way to come out to him.‎ As the first Bollywood movie about a lesbian relationship, we knew it wasn’t going to be a commercial hit in conservative India, and since we filmed it before gay(男同性恋) sex was made legal last September, we weren’ t sure whether the film would come out. But my dad said, “We need to change the way people think about these things. You have to be OK with loving whoever you want to love, or being whoever you ‎ want to be.” I couldn’t agree more. ④‎ Last year, I followed in my parents’ footsteps and married my own best friend, a kind, sensitive man who is comfortable expressing his feelings and cares deeply about the world around him. When I look at him, I see so many of the values that were passed down to me. In fact, I don’t know if I would have chosen him had I not been raised to value those qualities — and I have my parents to thank for that. Inheritance(遗产) is not about money, or property. It’s the values you teach your children. Teach them to do the right thing and to stand up for themselves and others, for the benefit of their future selves and the people around them.‎ ‎41. B 44. A 45. 根据第一段“have been happily married for 35 years. They support one another’ s goals and work together to raise their family”可知,作者的父母已经结婚35年了,他们互相支持对方的目标,共同努力养家糊口,由此可知,作者的父母彼此之间有深厚的感情,对家庭有责任感,故D项正确。 根据第三段最后一句中“what I could accomplish didn’t have to be limited or decided by my sex.” 所需填入句子的意思是“我在家里看到的行为和价值观指导着我的整个职业生涯,并在许多方面塑造了我的职业生涯”,根据②处前的“Seeing my parents interact as equals, I knew I too could have a voice someday. I felt powerful enough to stand up for myself.” 根据该段第一句“Cinema can be a reflection of what society is going through, but once in a while, you can be part of something that can actually change the way people think. 根据最后一段“I have my parents to thank for that. Inheritance (遗产) is not about money, or property. It’ s the values you teach your children. . Teach them to do the right thing and to stand up for themselves and others, for the benefit of their future selves and the people around them.” ‎ Keeping it in the family This can be painful. Not sharing your first language with loved ones is hard. Not passing it on to your own child can be especially tough. Many immigrant(移民) parents feel a sense of failure; they share stories on parenting forums and social media, hoping to find the secret to raising bilingual(双语的) children successfully. Children are good at learning languages but this doesn’t mean that rough exposure is enough. They must hear a language quite a bit to understand it — and use it often to be able to speak it comfortably. This is mental work, and a child who doesn’t have a motivation to speak a language will often avoid it. Children’s brains are already busy enough. So languages often fade away and die when parents move abroad.‎ In the past, governments discouraged immigrant families from keeping their languages. Former President Roosevelt worried that America would become a “multi-lingual boarding-house”. These days, officials tend to get involved less; some even see a valuable resource in immigrants’ language abilities. Yet many factors combine to ensure that children still lose their parents’ languages, or never learn them. A big one is institutional pressure. A child’s time spent with a second language is time not spent on their first. So teachers often discourage parents from speaking their languages to their children. Parents often unwillingly agree, worried about their children’s education.‎ This is a shame; children really can master two languages or even more. Research does indeed suggest their vocabulary in each language may be somewhat smaller for a while. But other studies show cognitive(认知的) advantages among bilinguals. They may be better at complex tasks, better at paying attention, and suffer the attack of Alzheimer’s disease later.‎ Even without those side-effects, though, a bilingual child’s connection to relatives and another culture is a good thing in itself. How to bring it about? When both parents speak the same heritage language, the strategy is often to speak that at home, and the national language outside. But when they have different languages, perhaps the most common approach is “one parent, one language”.‎ François Grosjean, an expert in foreign languages at the University of Neuchâtel in Switzerland, emphasizes necessity. He recommends reserving occasions on which the only language that may be spoken is the one that needs support.‎ Sabine Little, an expert in foreign languages at the University of Sheffield, puts the emphasis elsewhere. Making the heritage language yet another task forced by parents can lead to rejection, she argues. She recommends letting the child develop their own emotional connection to the language. She suggests learning through apps and entertainment made for native speakers.‎ Languages are an important part of identity; it is painful to try and fail to pass them on to a child. Success may be a question of remembering that they are not just another thing to be drilled into a young mind, but a matter of the heart.‎ The problem Immigrant parents feel a sense of failure because of the ___46___ of their native languages among their children.‎ Causes of the problem ‎● Immigrant children: little exposure as well as ___47___ of motivations.‎ ‎● Governments: too much involvement in a(n) ___48___ to encourage a single language nation.‎ ‎● Teachers: discouragement of bilingual learning despite parents’ ___49___ to agree Benefits of being bilingual ‎● Better handle complex tasks, better keep ___50___, and develop Alzheimer at a later age.‎ ‎● Enable children to be ___51___ to relatives and a different culture.‎ Solutions to the problem ‎● Adopt different ___52___ or the heritage language practice according to family language backgrounds.‎ ‎● Give more support to the language at a ___53___.‎ ‎● Develop emotional connection to the language.‎ ‎● Learn through apps and entertainment ___54___ at the native speakers.‎ Conclusion Immigrant parents should ____55____ in mind that learning languages is a matter of the heart.‎ ‎【答案】46. loss/disappearance/fading ‎ ‎47. lack/absence ‎ ‎48. attempt/effort/bid ‎ ‎49. unwillingness/reluctance ‎ ‎50. concentrated/focused ‎ ‎51. connected ‎ ‎52. strategies ‎ ‎53. disadvantage ‎ ‎54. aimed/targeted ‎ ‎55. keep/bear ‎【解析】‎ 本文是一篇说明文,介绍了很多移民家庭中父母的母语无法传给孩子,逐渐消失这一现象并分析了原因、提出了解决办法。 根据第一段“Not sharing your first language with loved ones is hard.
