B At 19, I worked in a doctor’s office as a medical assistant. I was shy, awkward and didn't have much faith in myself. I was not sure about the future or my place in it. I met a man there, a physician(医师), and became friends with him. He slowly began building me up, encouraging me to be more confident, to look outside the immediate(目前的)circle of my life and to see a future I could never quite believe. First he helped me accept myself and see my worth and then he encouraged me to take 1 or 2 college classes. I did well so he pushed a little asking me where I wanted to be in 10 years and what I wanted my life to become. Until he brought it up, I hadn't thought about it much. I had a job and I was fine. But he made me long for a different world, one with questions waiting to be answered, adventures waiting to be experienced and people waiting to be seen. I went to college and finally realized my dream of getting accepted into a physician assistant training program. Unfortunately it was very expensive and even with loans. I didn’t have the money to go. My dream was slipping away when this wonderful man took me out after work one evening, bought me a beer and offered to help me pay for my college education. Furthermore, he did it without asking for anything in return. Years later, I asked him "Why? " He said, "Because I knew you could be more than you were and because once when I wasn’t sure I could succeed and didn’t have the money for school, someone did it for me.” 24. Which can be the best title for this passage? A. A Dream B. The College Education C. A Physician D. The Love Relay 25. What can be inferred about the author? A. His dream came true at last. B. He had longed for a change all the time. C. He had never been satisfied with his life. D. He was a failure in his life 26. The meaning of the underlined phrase is closest to _______. A. growing in number B. praising about somebody. C. making somebody stronger D. setting up 27. Which is NOT the reason why the physician helped the author? A. The physician was a kind-hearted man. B. The author was a physician assistant. C. The physician believed in the author. D. Someone else did the same thing for the physician before. C I have been continuously against feeding a baby regularly. As a doctor, mother and scientist in child development I believe there is nothing to recommend it, from the baby’s point of view. Mothers, doctors and nurses and so on have no idea of where a baby’s blood sugar level lies. All we know is that a low level is harmful to brain development and makes a baby easily annoyed. In this state, the baby is difficult to calm down and sleep is impossible. The baby asks for attention by crying and searching for food with its mouth. It is not just unkind but also dangerous to say a four-hourly feeding timetable will make a baby satisfied. The first of the experts to advocate(提倡) a strict clock-watching timetable was Dr. Frederic Truby King who was against feeding in the night. I’ve never heard anything so ridiculous. Baby feeding shouldn’t follow a timetable set by the mum. What is important is feeding a baby in the best way, though it may cause some inconvenience in the first few weeks. Well, at last we have copper-bottomed research that supports demand feeding and points out the weaknesses of strictly timed feeding. The research finds out that babies who are fed on demand do better at school at age 5,7,11 and 14,than babies fed according to the clock. By the age of 8,their IQ(智商)scores are four to five percent higher than babies fed by a strict timetable.. This research comes from Oxford and Essex University using a sample(样本)of 10,419 children born in the early 1990s,taking account of parental education, family income, a child’s sex and age, the mother’s health and feeding style. These results don’t surprise me. I hope this research will put an end to advocating strictly timed baby feeding practices. Actually,it makes sense to feed baby according to their demand. 28. What does the author think about Dr. King? A. He is strict. B. He is unkind. C. He has the wrong idea. D. He sets a timetable for mothers. 29. The word copper -bottomed in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to______. A. basic B. reliable C. surprising D. interesting 30. What does the research tell us about feeding a baby on demand? A. The baby will sleep well. B. The baby will have its brain harmed. C. The baby will have a low blood sugar level. D. The baby will grow to be wiser by the age of 8. 31.The author supports feeding the baby . A. whenever itwants food B. every four hours C. in the night D. according to its blood sugar level D Technology has become an important part of our lives. It has changed our lives in many ways. It makes life more convenient for us: we can send messages quickly via the Internet, cook meals in a few minutes in a microwave, and book train tickets online instead of walking to the station. Have we become addicted to technology? Not too long ago, many children enjoyed reading a good book in their spare time. Nowadays, young people are more likely to be seen playing video games or watching television. Some people even claim they can’t go without watching their favorite TV programme, which is a bit extreme. Similarly, sending letters has become a thing of the past. It has been replaced by email, instant messaging and social media. I think this is a huge shame; for me, there’s nothing better than receiving a letter in the post. It shows someone has taken the time to sit down and write something; this is much more personal than a conversation online. I regularly send letters and postcards to my grandma to keep her updated with life in France. The existence of social media has turned us into antisocial beings. Instead of meeting up with friends and seeing them face-to-face, we now spend a lot of time communicating online. Although it has its advantages---especially enabling us to keep in touch with loved ones in different countries--- we shouldn’t forget the value of real-life human interaction(交流). It is, after all, in our nature to meet others! I spend a lot of time using technology. I rely on the Internet and my laptop to plan lessons for my classes. I use WiFi on my phone to send messages. That said, when I’m on holiday it is nice to switch them off and have a break. Taking a break from technology is liberating. 32.The question in the first paragraph is used to ________. A. Stress the importance of technology B. expect readers to make an immediate answer C. show the writer’s doubt on technology D. introduce the topic of the passage 33. According to the text, the writer _______. A. Valued communication in real life B. felt ashamed of writing a letter C. spent a lot of time using social media D. couldn’t go without technology 34.The last sentence of the text means that _________. A. everyone is free to use technology B. you will get freedom by giving up technology C. technology can break down for a while D. our life can’t be ruled by technology 35.What might be the most suitable title for the passage? A. Does Technology Improve Our Life? B. Will Our Fate be decided by Technology? C. Are We Addicted to Technology? D. Can We Get Rid of Technology? 第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Questions to Ask Before Getting Your Child a Cellphone At what age should you get your child a cellphone?__36_However, before you decide to add your child to your family plan, ask yourself these questions. __37__ If you and your child are not often apart beyond school hours, a cellphone may not be a serious necessity, but if he is independent or involved in extracurricular (课外的) activities outside your home, a cellphone could be useful, especially during emergencies as a convenient means of communication with you.
