Once outside, students broke into an easy jog toward the field until, all of a sudden, Marcus cried out, “Look! What happened to the stadium? It looks…angry.” The students turned to see what he was pointing at all at once: Someone painted angry faces on the walls of the stadium! During lunch, all of the students were whispering about the graffiti (涂鸦). Possible explanations spread like wildfire around the school. Later in the afternoon, when Brian cleaned the blackboard, Marcus suddenly noticed the paint on his hands. He suspected that it was Brian who painted the graffiti and decided to report it to Mr. Johnson. The next morning, Brian was called to the principal’s office. The moment Mr. Johnson asked about the graffiti, Brian burst into tears. Filled with shame, he explained that he liked to paint, but he couldn’t join the art club because he had to go right home after school to baby-sit his little brother. “I don’t know why I painted those faces, and now I’ve ruined the stadium!” he sobbed. Mr. Johnson was quite angry at first, but he began to soften as he realized how miserable Brian’s life was. “Brian, painting graffiti on school walls is a very serious matter. You will have to clean and repaint the walls.” Mr. Johnson paused. “However, I must say, those paintings are quite good.” Brian looked up and said, “Drawing and painting are the only things that I can do well.” Mr. Johnson looked at Brian and thought for a moment before making a decision. “Well,” he said, “some teachers suggested that we hire a local artist to paint our school mascot on the stadium wall. How would you feel about participating in that?” “Really?” Brian hesitated, unable to believe what he just heard. “Yes, but this project will be hard work, and you’ll be expected to complete the job on time. We can consider it part of your punishment,” Mr. Johnson said, trying to hide his smile as he picked up the phone. 25. Seeing the graffiti on the walls of the stadium, the students felt _____. A. angry B. surprised C. excited D. disappointed 26. What do we know about Brian? A. He painted the walls with Marcus. B. He was proud of his graffiti. C. He had to take care of his brother. D. He told everything to Marcus. 27. How did Mr. Johnson decide to deal with the matter? A. He did not allow Brian to join the art club. B. He told Brian’s parents about the matter. C. He praised Brian for painting on the walls. D. He asked Brian to help paint the mascot. 28. What kind of person is Mr. Johnson? A. Strict. B. Kind-hearted. C. Stubborn. D. Careful. C Among my peers, the most common reasons to sit in front are: poor vision, poor hearing, and harder to fall asleep (my main reason). That’s about it. I’ve sat in the back and I’ve sat in the front, and I’ve seen no difference in how professors treat me. In fact, I sat in the front of my math class and still fell asleep a lot. I went to office hours for that class regularly and asked the professor if it bothered him and he said he understood completely. I put in the work outside the classroom and performed well on exams, and that’s what ends up on the transcript (成绩单). From my experience, going to office hours regularly, emailing questions that may be beyond the scope of class just out of your own curiosity, and reading ahead of time so you can ask good relevant questions are the best ways to give a professor a good impression. Where I’ve sat in the classroom hasn’t noticeably affected a professor’s opinion of me in the slightest. Typically, sitting at the front indicates to me that you want to hear everything I say and want to have more one-on-one questioning with me. Sitting in the middle suggests that you want to fit in, and will be better at group work. Sitting in the back usually means that you want to play with your phone. The people in the front seats will often get the highest grades, dropping as the rows go back. Yes, of course, this is a tendency and not a law, and there are exceptions. But I must point out that for some older professors, they actually can’t see the people in the back well. I have not noticed where to sit has any effect on attentiveness, participation and respectful behavior. I have noticed though, that students who sit in the back row are almost always disrespectful and inattentive. I have not observed any correlation between achievement and seat location, even though when I was a student myself, I usually preferred to sit in the front. 29. According to the author, the best ways to impress professors do NOT include _____. A. preparing for the class in advance B. asking questions through emailing C. going to office hours regularly D. sitting in the front in every class 30. What does the word underlined “correlation” in paragraph 5 probably mean? A. Connection. B. Balance. C. Difference. D. Separation. 31. What is the author’s opinion of students sitting in the front? A. They may be better at group work. B. They may want to stay awake in class. C. They want to play with their phones. D. Their grades are always the highest. 32. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage? A. To persuade students to sit in the front. B. To analyze the advantages of sitting in the back. C. To show the effect of seating on study results. D. To discuss different seat locations in the class. D With smartphones and e-readers becoming more common, some have worried that the days of paper books are numbered. But as a recent survey showed, traditional books are still popular among readers. Industry research company Nielsen found that 7 percent more paper books were sold in the UK in 2016 compared to the previous year, while sales of their digital rivals declined by 4 percent. It was the second year in a row that e-book sales have fallen, according to the report released last month. So what is the reason behind? Nielsen’s survey, surprisingly, found that it is young people who preferred physical books to e-reader versions. Steve Bohme, research director at Nielsen Book Research UK, explained that young people were using books as a break from their daily connections to electronic devices and social media. “We are seeing that books are a respite (缓解), particularly for young people who are so busy digitally,” he told The Guardian. And the story is the same in other countries. According to a study by American University linguistics professor Naomi S. Baron, 92 percent of college students preferred paper books instead of e-books. In 2010 and 2013, Baron led a team that asked more than 420 university students from the United States, Slovakia, Japan and Germany how they preferred to read. The main reasons were that when reading e-books, students find it not easy to concentrate on the contents. Some also ended up with headaches or sore eyes. In addition, print books can bring a very different reading experience. Slovakian students in particular said that they liked the smell of books when reading a hard copy. Other students said that they get a sense of accomplishment when they finish reading a paper book and they enjoy seeing it on the bookshelf. While e-book sales have declined, Bohme pointed out that it was still important to remember that the figures were still higher than they were five years ago in the UK. Bohme told The Guardian that e-book sales would continue to decline this year as industry confidence in traditional books increases. “If we have a couple of years of that success story, print sales will keep going up,” he said. 33. Which is NOT the reason why students prefer paper books? A. The design of hard copies is more attractive. B. It is difficult to focus when reading e-books. C. Reading e-books may cause headaches and sore eyes. D. Finishing reading paper books brings a sense of achievement. 34. What do we know about print books and e-books? A. Sales figures of e-books were higher in 2011 in the UK. B. More paper books have been sold than e-books in the UK recently. C. More than 10% students still prefer e-books according to Baron’s survey. D. It is possible that print sales will increase continually in the future. 35. What is the best title for the text? A. Stop Reading E-books. B. Pleasure of reading. C. Print Coming Back. D.
