B I came to Dallas with no expectations, and despite(尽管) some bad comments on the Internet, most of my well-traveled readers eagerly guided me through the third largest city in Texas, pointing out where to go and what to see and do. I was thankful for their advice and how it strengthened my belief that no matter where you land in the world, no matter how familiar it might be, there are interesting and exciting moments to be found. Dallas, Texas is such a city and even after just one day of visit, I was sure that I needed a few longer days to truly know what this place was all about. In the morning I was impressed with tulips(郁金香) at the Dallas Arboretum, and then enjoyed a smoky, meaty brunch at Smoke. Afterwards, I explored more of the downtown and arts district, including the Dallas Museum of Art, the excellent Crow Collection, and Nasher Sculpture Center. In the late afternoon, I paid a visit to the Highland Park and Preston Hollow neighborhoods. I also went for the biggest steak in Texas at Bob's Steak & Chop House and had a hot spring bath. The next morning, I hung out with some of my Twitter followers at Klyde Warren Park and talked about how much I had enjoyed Dallas. As I travel across this state, I find it impossible to fit Texas into any particular box, and you can say the same about Dallas. Anyone who travels here can find whatever they want. I know I'll return—Dallas is a city with a long "To Do" list, including a visit to Cowboy Stadium (next time) but until then, I'll remember everything I did get to see and do in the big Dallas. 4.According to the text, the author . A. expected the trip to be exciting B. visited Dallas with a tour guide C. got his readers to help with the trip D. was affected by the comments on the Internet 5.What's the author's general view on travel? A. It will always bring us surprise. B. Travel time should not be too short. C. Beautiful scenery outside helps us relax. D. It's important to ask well-traveled people's advice. 6.Paragraph 3 is mainly developed by . A. giving descriptions B. making comparisons C. following the time order D. following the space order 7.What does the author want to express in the last paragraph? A. His thirst for visiting Dallas once more. B. His impression of Cowboy Stadium. C. His next travel plan. D. His love for Texas. C Next time you make yourself a hot cup of tea or coffee, you might want to let it cool down a bit before drinking. Researchers say letting your hot drinks cool off could help you avoid some kinds of cancer. Researchers at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) found evidence that drinks at temperatures above 65℃, when swallowed, can cause cancer of the esophagus (食道). The researchers examined findings from other studies where tea and coffee were often served at 70℃ or above. Those studies were completed in Iran, China and South America. In developed countries, health experts have linked esophageal cancer to smoking and alcoholic(酒精) drinks. However, this form of cancer is more common in areas where people drink beverages (饮料;酒水)at very high temperatures. In Europe and the United States, many people drink coffee and tea at temperatures around 60℃.And they often add milk which lowers the temperature greatly. However, tea-drinkers in Iran and mate-drinkers in South America often enjoy their beverages at closer to 70℃. The researchers find that South Americans not only drink their mate very hot, they also drink it through a metal straw(吸管). This sends the scalding liquid directly into the throat. The findings, however, are good news for coffee drinkers. In 1991, the World Health Organization listed coffee as possibly carcinogenic (致癌的).” The WHO officials have since changed their position on that listing. They now suggest that the temperature of your hot drink is a greater risk factor than the actual drink itself. The results suggest that drinking very hot beverages is one probable cause of esophageal cancer and that it is the temperature, rather than the drinks themselves, that appears to be responsible. 8.What might be the cause of esophageal cancer in developed countries? A. Smoking. B. Alcoholic drinks. C. Unhealthy vegetables. D. Hot drinks. 9.Where do tea-drinkers like adding milk? A. In China. B. In Iran. C. In Europe. D. In South Africa . 10.What does the underlined word “scalding” in paragraph 5 mean? A. sweet. B. cold. C. hot . D.tasteless. 11.Which of the following descriptions is TRUE? A. Once, the WHO thought coffee would cause cancer. B. Drinks below 60℃ can cause esophagus cancer. C. Temperature should not be the cause of cancer. D. Drinking milk is a much healthier way to keep away from cancer. D Naturally, parents praise their kids. They want to encourage their children every day. But when it comes to building self-esteem (自尊) in children, praise doesn't always have a positive effect, according to a special edition of the journal Child Development. The issue, edited by Eddie and Thomas, is focused on research into how children develop a sense of self and building your child’s confidence takes different skills than you might think. Eddie points out that children are born without a sense of self, but it doesn’t take long before some kids have a lot of confidence and may feel superior to peers, while others may carry more self-doubt and see themselves as inferior." Yet no one really understands what causes children to view themselves the way they do. Surprisingly little is known about the origins of children’s self-concept," Eddie said. Research has found that when kids have a warm, loving relationship with their parents, they develop higher self-esteem. However, when they are given endless praise that is unequal to their achievements, their self-esteem may drop. Instead of lavish praise, parents should focus on warmth to build self-esteem, researchers have found—specifically, parents should show interest in their kids’ activities and share joy with them. This makes children feel noticed and valued. According to Eddie’s own research, children may develop lower self-esteem when their parents give them lots of positive and overstated praises. Too much praise can make children worry about disappointing their parents, and may lead to an unhealthy attitude toward failure. Other studies suggest that parents can teach children that failure is beneficial by encouraging kids to ask themselves, “Why didn’t I achieve the result I wanted, and what can I do to change the outcome in the future?” Additionally, it’s important for parents to encourage the belief that kids can develop basic abilities through devotion and hard work. Kids who are praised for their effort instead of their ability are more likely to develop a growth mindset, which have a positive impact on their confidence. 12.What does the special edition of Child Development focus on? A. When is the best time to build a child’s self-esteem. B. What effect praise has on a child’s self understanding. C. How children develop their sense of self-esteem. D. How blaming and overpraise hurt a child’s confidence. 13.How does too much praise hurt children’s self-esteem? A. They’ll be afraid of failing and disappointing their parents. B. They’ll have a false understanding of their ability and fail. C. They’ll become too proud to get along with other children. D. They’ll focus more on their advantages than their weaknesses. 14.What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Children’s effort will help to build their confidence. B. Children should he taught the value of hard work. C. Praising a child’s ability will make them happier. D. Some parents doubt if kids can develop their abilities. 15.Which of the following is the best title for this passage? A. Praising a child for any reason helps build his self-esteem. B. How kids develop their sense of self-esteem differently. C. Why some kids have more self-doubt than the others. D.
