B Over the centuries the French have lost a number of famous battles with the British. However, they’ve always felt superior in the kitchen. France has for centuries had a reputation for cooking excellence, and Britain for some of the worst cooking in the world. But according to a recent survey, that reputation may no longer reflect reality. In the survey, 71% of the Britons said they cook at home every day, while only 59% of the French said they cook daily. British home cooks spend more time cooking each week and also produce a greater variety of dishes than French home cooks. The reaction in London was predictably enthusiastic. British food has greatly improved since the 1990s. Once upon a time, the menu for many family meals would have been roast beef, potatoes and over-cooked vegetables, but not now. Home cooks are experimenting with the huge range of ingredients now available in British supermarkets and are preparing all kinds of new dishes, using the cookbooks that sell millions of copies every year. As a result, there’s much more diversity in British food now, compared to French food, which tends to be very traditional. Some French people say that the survey did not show the whole picture. They agree that during the week French women don’t cook as much as they used to because most of them work and don’t have much time. They tend to buy ready-made or frozen dishes, but many of them make up for it on the weekend. There’s also a difference between Paris and the countryside. It’s true that people in Paris don’t cook much, but elsewhere, cooking is still at the heart of daily life. For many French people, opinions about British food have not changed. When Bernard Blier, the food editor at a magazine, was asked about British food, he replied: “I don’t go out of my way to try it. It is not very refined. You can say that I’m not a fan at all. ” 4. According to the passage, nowadays British people ______. A. cook less at home than the French every day. B. no longer eat roast beef and over-cooked vegetables. C. are more willing to try cooking all kinds of new foods. D. buy more cookbooks than French people do. 5. What can we infer from the fourth paragraph? A. French women cook less often now. B. The French prefer ready-made dishes. C. French women seldom cook on the weekend. D. Cooking is at the heart of people’s life in Paris. 6. What is Bernard’s attitude towards British food? A. He would love to try it. B. He shows no interest in it. C. He considers it worse than before. D. He considers it better than before. 7. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. The history of British food. B. The history of French food. C. The change in British food. D. The change in French food. C How Much Can We Afford to Forget? In 2018, Science magazine asked some young scientists what schools should teach students. Most said students should spend less time memorizing facts and have more space for creative activities. As the Internet grows more powerful, students can access(获得)knowledge easily. Why should they be required to carry so much of it around in their heads? Civilizations(文明)develop through forgetting life skills that were once necessary. In the Agricultural(农业的)Age, a farmer could afford to forget hunting skills. When societies industrialized, the knowledge of farming could be safe to forget. Nowadays, smart machines give us access to most human knowledge. It seems that we no longer need to remember most things. Does it matter? Researchers have recognized several problems that may happen. For one, human beings have biases (偏见), and smart machines are likely to increase our biases. Many people believe smart machines are necessarily correct and objective, but machines are trained through a repeated testing and scoring process. In the process, human beings still decide on the correct answers. Another problem relates to the case of accessing information. When there were no computers, efforts were required to get knowledge from other people, or go to the library. We know what knowledge lies in other brains or books, and what lies in our heads. But today, the Internet gives us the information we need quickly. This can lead to the mistaken belief — the knowledge we found was part of what we knew all along. In a new civilization rich in machine intelligence, we have easy access to smart memory networks where information is stored. But dependency on a network suggests possibilities of being harmed easily. The collapse of any of the networks of relations our well-being(健康)depends upon, such as food and energy, would produce terrible results. Without food we get hungry; without energy we feel cold. And it is through widespread loss of memory that civilizations are at risk of falling into a dark age. We forget old ways to free up time and space for new skills. As long as the older forms of knowledge are stored somewhere in our networks, and can be found when we need them, perhaps they’re not really forgotten. Still, as time goes on, we gradually but unquestionably become strangers to future people. 8. Why are smart machines likely to increase our biases? A. Because they go off course in testing and scoring. B. Because we control the training process on them. C. Because we offer them too much information. D. Because they overuse the provided answers. 9. The case of accessing information from the Internet . A. frees us from making efforts to learn new skills B. prevents civilizations from being lost at a high speed C. misleads us into thinking we already knew the knowledge D. separates the facts we have from those in the smart machines 10. The word “collapse”in Paragraph 5 probably means“ ”. A. a sudden failure B. the basic rule C. a disappointing start D. the gradual development 11. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage? A. To question about the standards of information storage. B. To discuss our problems of communication with machines. C. To stress the importance of improving our memorizing ability. D. To remind us of the risk of depending on machines to remember. D Do you have imagination? Do you like to solve problems? If so, you could be the next great inventor(发明家). “But I’m just a kid,” you might say! Don’t worry about a little thing like age. For example, one famous inventor — Benjamin Franklin — got his start when he was only 12. At that young age, he created paddles for his hands to help him swim faster. Eventually, his creation led to what we now call flippers! So you don’t have to be an adult to be an inventor. One thing you do need, though, is something that kids have plenty of. curiosity and imagination. Kids are known for looking at things in new and unique ways. Jeanie Low invented the Kiddie Stool when she was just 11. It’s a folding stool that fits under the kitchen sink. Kids can unfold it and use it to reach the sink all by themselves. At the age of 15, Louis Braille invented the system named after him that allows the blind to read. Chelsea Lannon received a patent(专利)when she was just 8 for the “pocket diaper,” a new type of diaper that includes a pocket for holding baby wipes and powder. 12. By saying “But I’m just a kid”, you probably mean you____. A. are too young to achieve anything. B. can do anything though you are young. C. are old enough to become an inventor. D. have to learn knowledge from other people. 13. Kids are most likely to be inventors probably because they_____. A. would like to make friends with others. B. think about things in quite different ways. C. like playing all kinds of toys at home. D. usually work hard at their lessons at school. 14. Who invented something that helps the blind to read? A. Jeanie Low B. Benjamin Franklin C. Chelsea Lannon D. Louis Braille 15. Which of the following can be the main idea for this passage? A. Kids have curiosity and imagination. B. There are some world famous inventors. C. It is possible for kids to be inventors. D. Kids are exactly like adults in a way. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Time is something that we all are taking for granted these days. We Senior 3 students are suffering from great pressure due to the fierce competition in study. To help deal with this problem, our Students' Union will hold a Psychological Health Week next week, the theme of which is how to relieve mental pressure. In the whole week, there will be various kinds of activities. A lecture given by a psychological professor on what to do with the pressure of study will provide us with professional psychological guidance. There will also be a drama which will show us an excellent performance. In addition, some fun games will be played among the students. I firmly believe mental health is of great importance for everyone, especially us Senior 3 students. Thus, I'm sure the Psychological Health Week will be quite beneficial for us to relieve pressure and can motivate us to study harder and more efficiently. Do you also have such activities in your school? Looking forward to your reply. Yours, Li Hua查看更多
