B Check out the facts about the tsunami(海啸)and learn some interesting information related to these great walls of water that can cause so much destruction. Find out what causes tsunamis and read about some recent examples of tsunamis that have occurred around the globe. Tsunamis are huge waves of water that are usually caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions (喷发).As a tsunami approaches the shore, water may move back from the coast. If it is shallow enough, water may be pulled back hundreds of metres. If you are on the shore and observe this phenomenon, you'll know that a tsunami is on the way. Regions in tsunami danger zones often have warning systems in place to give people as much time to evacuate (撤出)as possible. When tsunamis hit shallow water (often near the coast), they slow down but increase in height. An earthquake in the Indian Ocean off Indonesia in December 2004 caused a tsunami that killed over 200,000 people in 14 countries. In March 2011, the Tohoku earthquake off the eastern coast of Japan caused a tsunami that was a major factor in the death of over 15,000 people. The tsunami waves created by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake reached heights of over 40 metres in northern Japan, destroying coastal towns and causing a number of nuclear accidents. The Japanese word "tsunami” literally means "harbour wave”. Tsunamis are sometimes referred to as tidal waves but this term has fallen out of favour because tsunamis are not related to tides. 24. Which of the following shows a tsunami is around the corner? A. An earthquake takes place. B. The water near the shore is pulled back. C. The water marches towards the coast. D. The water near the shore is very shallow. 25. What can we learn from the passage? A. More people died in the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake than in the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. B. The term "tidal wave" is used more often than "tsunami". C. The word "tsunami” is from British English. D. Some nuclear accidents happened after the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. 26. The underlined parts “out of favour” can be replaced by " ". A. uninteresting B. unsuitable C. unforgettable D. unimaginable 27. The passage is mainly developed by . A. stating some facts B. making some comparisons C. making some conclusions D. providing some quotations C The world maps will soon be altered to reflect an eighth continent! Dubbed "Zealandia" the landmass that lies east of Australia covers 4.9 million km. Over 94 percent of it is submerged (淹没的) in the southwest Pacific Ocean, with just the islands of New Zealand and New C aledonia visible above sea level. To be clear, the underwater land is not a recent find. Researchers have known about its existence since 1995 when Bruce Luyendyk discovered and proposed an eighth continent that he called Zealandia. At the time, the area was dismissed as a collection of islands and land fragments (碎片), or at the most, classified as a micro continent—a landmass of continental crust that is not geologically connected to the nearest continent, in this case, Australia. However, after observing the areas features on an underwater topography map, New Zealand geologist Nick became convinced that Zealandia is a continent. Mortimer says that while Zealandia is much smaller than our seven continents, at over half the size of Australia, it is unfair to classify it as a microcontinent. The geologist argues, “If you could pull the plug on the world’s oceans, then Zealandia would probably long ago have been recognized as a continent.” Geologist Christopher Scotese argues that too much of the landmass is underwater, asserting it’s “almost a continent the way Pluto is almost a planet.” Richard Ernst, a geologist, proposes coining a new term minicontinent—for Zealandia. He thinks this is perfect given that it is too large to be called a microcontinent and too small to be classified as a full-sized continent. Given that there is no international panel to decide the fate of Zealandia, its future as a continent is uncertain. Mortimer hopes that if supporters start using the term Zealandia, it may eventually catch on. Whether that happens remains to be seen, but for now, we will have to be satisfied with just seven continents! 28. According to the text, Zealandia ________. A. was found and named by Bruce Luyendyk B. is made of a lot of visible islands C. is connected to Australia geologically D. covers 94% of the southwest Pacific Ocean 29. What does the phrase "pull the plug on" mean? A. Enter B. Uncover C. Sail D. Fold 30. Why does Christopher NOT consider Zealandia to be a continent? A. It is too small to be a full-sized continent. B. Some sections of it is just 7 miles thick. C. Most of it lies under water. D. It was once just part of the continent Australia. 31. What might be the best title for the text? A. Is Minicontinent a New Name for Zealandia? B. Is a Continent Appearing in the Pacific Ocean? C. Is the World Map Going to Be changed? D. Is "Zealandia" an Eighth Continent? D There have been many problems with our schools today, the biggest of which is closely related to our culture. In general, our culture, as represented in the media, gets excited by famous stars, and constantly stresses that it’s what you have, not what you are, that counts. Parents are encouraged to be away from even very small children for most of the day. Too many voters go for politicians who would rather cut school funding than to get rid of tax cuts for the wealthy. All contribute greatly to the problems of educating our children. Today’s teachers have to deal with a culture that is vastly different than in the past. They report that there is, among more children than ever, a lack of motivation, no drive to succeed or even try. The role models that boys view in the media mostly consist of men in comedies and other shows who are rude and often extremely immature; self-centered overpaid athletes; men in movies, television dramas, video games, etc. who are preoccupied with violence and power. As Leonard Sax wrote in “Boys Adrift”, “Teenage boys are looking for models of mature adulthood, but we no longer make any collective effort to provide such models.” Girls are attacked not only with such annoying images of males, but also with women who are preoccupied with appearance and are extremely materialistic. In such a cultural environment, it is more important than ever to have responsible, loving and caring parents who have enough time and motivation to devote to their children and see to it as their duty to model for them and raise them with high standards of honesty and responsibility along with tending to their physical needs. They need to care enough to see that their children are not attacked with the garbage that comes from movie, television and computer screens. In today’s culture, they are basically alone in this effort since, unfortunately, so much is working against them. Until we, as a culture, face the truth about ourselves — that we are not providing adequately for a great many of our children — the storm will continue to rage over our education system. 32. How is paragraph 1 mainly developed? A. By analyzing causes. B. By showing differences. C. By describing a process. D. By using time order. 33. What does today’s culture probably bring to the children? A. Narrow access to entertainment. B. Poor understanding abilities. C. Few materialistic models. D. Little desire for success. 34. We can learn from the text that in today’s culture parents need to ________. A. devote more to their children B. find honest models for their children C. keep their children away from computers D. help their children develop motivation 35. What is the author’s attitude towards today’s culture? A. indifferent. B. ambiguous. C. dissatisfied. D. approving. 七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项.
