‎ A The new university hospital in Trenton, which the Health Minister Victoria Culley has described as a “shining example” to hospitals all over the country, has been open now for over six months. Having heard several complimentary ( 赞美的) comments about the organization and efficiency of the place, I decided to see for myself.‎ In spite of arriving early, I found that there were already long queues at the reception desks. While I was waiting, I looked around and had to admit that it is an impressive building: large and light with marble everywhere. Eventually my turn came and I presented my doctor’s letters to the receptionist, who informed me that I was in the X-ray queue and I’d have to go to another queue and start again! I couldn’t believe it and asked her if it might be possible to give me an appointment card anyway without making me queue up again. She informed me it was no good arguing with her and I should have read the sign, an almost invisible piece of card saying “X-rays” just in front of her where very few people can have seen it. No matter how hard I tried to persuade her, she wouldn’t give me an appointment card for a blood test, so I started queuing again and finally got the card at 8:30! I then set off for the blood test room, following the nice new signs until they suddenly stopped and I realized that I was in a part of the hospital that hasn’t been finished yet! When I got to the door I saw a notice saying “Back in 10 minutes”. I sat down and waited for 30 minutes before a doctor appeared and told me to come in without, of course, apologizing for keeping me waiting. I asked him why I’d had to wait and he explained he’d had to help out in another ward which was understaffed as a result of a flu epidemic (流感) among the doctors!‎ I got out of the hospital at 9:45 a.m. and breathed a sigh of relief. I’m now waiting for the results.‎ So, Mrs. Culley, a far from rosy picture. Certainly the public should be under no illusions (错觉) that things have changed for the better. Perhaps you should visit the hospital as an anonymous outpatient (门诊病人) rather than a government minister if you really want to know what it’s like unless, as I suspect, you don’t actually care about much.‎ 21. According to Gerald Crabtree, a scientist at Stanford University in the US, we are.‎ You may not want to hear this, but Crabtree believes that human intelligence reached its peak more than 2,000 years ago and ever since then has been going downhill. “If an average Greek from 1,000 BC were transported to modern times, he or she would be one of the brightest among us,” Crabtree told The Guardian.‎ At the heart of Crabtree’s thinking is a simple idea. In the past, intelligence was critical for survival when our ancestors had to avoid dangerous animals and hunt for food. The difference of being smart or stupid is often life or death. However, after the spread of agriculture, when our ancestors began to live in farming communities, the need to keep their intelligence in peak condition gradually reduced.‎ This is not hard to understand. Most of the time, pressure is what keeps us going – you need the pressure from your teachers to finish your homework; the pressure of looking pretty promotes you to lose weight when summer comes. And the same is also true of our intelligence – if we think less, we become less smart.‎ These mutations( 变 异 ) are harmful to our intelligence and they were all developed in the past 3,000 years. The other evidence that Crabtree holds is in our genes. He found that among the 2,000 to 5,000 genes that we have to determine human intelligence, there are two or more mutations in each of us.‎ However, Crabtree’s theory has been criticized by some who say that early humans may have better hunting and surviving abilities, but people today have developed a more diverse intelligence. For example, spearing a tiger doesn’t necessarily require more brainpower than playing chess or writing a poem. Moreover, the power of modern education means a lot more people have the opportunity to learn nowadays.‎ ‎“You wouldn’t get Stephen Hawking 2,000 years ago. He just wouldn’t exist,” Thomas Hills of the University of Warwick, UK, told Live Science. “But now we have people of his intellectual capacity doing things and making insights that we would never have achieved in our environment of evolutionary adaptation.”‎ 28. What is Crabtree’s recent finding according to the article?‎ A. The Greeks from 1,000 BC could have been the smartest in human history.‎ B. Our ancient ancestors had no better surviving abilities than we do nowadays.‎ C. Humans have been getting steadily more intelligent since the invention of farming.‎ D. Mutations in genes that decide human intelligence have affected the development of intelligence.‎ 29. According to Crabtree, ancient humans .‎ A. were forced to be smart due to natural selection pressures B. had much more genes that determine human intelligence C. relied more on group intelligence than individual intelligence D. developed a diverse intelligence to adapt to the harsh realities 30. ‎. Some argue that Crabtree’s theory is false because they think .‎ A. people today are under much more pressure than early humans B. it’s ridiculous to compare a hunter’s and a poet’s intelligence C. human intelligence nowadays is different from that of the distant past D. modern education is far more advanced than ancient education 31. What is Thomas Hills’ attitude toward Crabtree’s theory?‎ A. Unfavorable B. Supportive C. Worried D. Confused.‎ D In summer, millions of people will head for the beach. And while the ocean can be a great place to swim and play, it may also be useful in another way. Some scientists think that waves could help make electricity.‎ ‎“Have you ever been on a surfboard or boat and felt yourself being lifted up by a wave? Or have you jumped in the water and felt the energy as waves crashed over you?” asked Jamie Taylor of the Wave Energy Group at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. “There is certainly a lot of energy in waves.”‎ Scientists are working on using that energy to make electricity. Most waves are created when winds blow across the ocean. “The winds start out by making little ripples (波纹) in the water, but if they keep on blowing, those ripples get bigger and bigger and turn into waves,” Taylor said.“Waves are one of nature’s ways of picking up energy and then sending it off on a journey.”‎ When waves come towards the shore, people can set up dams or other barricades to block the water and send it through a large wheel called a turbine ( 涡轮). The turbine can then power an electrical generator (发电机).‎ The United States and a few other countries have started doing research on wave energy, and it is already being used in Scotland.‎ The resource is huge. We will never run out of wave power, besides, wave energy does not create the s ame pollution as other energy sources, such as oil and coal.‎ Oceans cover three quarters of the earth’s surface. That would make wave power seem perfect for creating energy around the world. There are some drawbacks, however.‎ Jamie Taylor said that wave power still cost too much money. He said that its effects on animals in the sea were still unknown. Plus, wave power would get in the way of fishing and boat traffic.‎ With more research, however, “many of these problems might be overcome,” Taylor said. “Demand for energy to power our TVs and computers, drive our cars, and heat and cool our homes is growing quickly throughout the world. Finding more energy sources is very important, for traditional so urces of energy like oil and gas may run out some day. ”‎ In the future, when you turn on a light switch, an ocean wave could be providing the electricity!‎ 32. Which of the following is NOT true?‎ A. Wave power costs too much money.‎ B. Wave energy creates pollution like other energy sources.‎ C. Wave power affects fishing and boat traffic.‎ D. Wave power may affect marine animals.‎ 33. We can infer from th e passage that .‎ A. finding new energy sources like wave energy is important B. wave energy is a resource that will never run out and is used all over the world A. wave power is perfect for creating energy around the world B. wave power doesn’t create any pollution 33. The underlined word “drawbacks” in the seventh paragraph probably means .‎ A. regrets B. adventures C. shortcomings D. difficulties 34. What can be the best title for the passage?‎ A. How to Get Electricity by Waves B. A Huge Resource of Energy.‎ C. Can Waves Make Electricity?‎ D. Here are my ideas on how to make it easier to communicate with parents.‎ First, we should respect and trust our parents. Don’t be rude to them even if they have done something wrong. They have experienced more and always try their best to protect us from dangers. Second, if we often talk with them about our life and experience, we will know each other better. Third, if sometimes we don’ t agree with our parents’ decision, we should try to put ourselves into their shoes and we will soon understand them.‎ Thank you for listening.‎
