Margaret Thatcher by Charles Moore (2013) Before Moore published the first volume of his biography, there had already been a mountain of books on Thatcher. Moore’s account is different. He shows that far from being fearless, she could often be fearful without cause. The final volume will include her fall from power. Harold Wilson by Ben Pimlott (1992) Harold Wilson had become a ghostly figure when this book was published in 1992. The absence heightened a sense of mystery. Who was he? How to explain his seemingly contradictory characteristics? Pimlott solves some of the mysteries; the book is detailed until Wilson’s final phase(任期)as prime minister in 1974. Churchill by Roy Jenkins (2001) Jenkins writes a politician as well as a historian, analyzing Churchill’s historic moves from the opinions of one who had also spoken in the Commons. Jenkins had resigned from high positions in battles over policy, and as one that changed parties, though not as frequently as Churchill did. Roy Jenkins by John Campbell (2014) Campbell calmly describes the many political and personal dramas, including Jenkins’ intense relationship with Anthony Crosland when they were both students at Oxford. Campbell also addresses Jenkins’ various affairs with women. Like Jenkins’s political heroes, he led many lives. Campbell is sharp in describing each of them. Diaries, Volumes One to Six by Alastair Campbell (2017) Love or hate him, Campbell remains the master of the inside story, and not just because of his unusual ideas on the relationship between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. This is an incredibly detailed book on what it’s like to live inside No. 10: the cruel space of events; and the constant conflict with the media. 21. Which of the following leaders has the largest number of books written about them? A. Harold Wilson. B. Churchill. C. Margaret Thatcher. D. Tony Blair. 22. Which writer was once a politician? A. Ben Pimlott. B. Charles Moore. C. John Campbell. D. Roy Jenkins. 23. What’s purpose of the author’s writing the passage? A. To introduce some histories on selections. B. To recommend some books on leaders. C. To tell some mysteries about historians. D. To think highly of some famous leaders. B It was a normal school day for senior Solymar Solis until an unexpected visitor arrived. Her dad, Sgt. Carlos Solis Melendez, surprised her by coming home early from Kuwait and visiting her unannounced at Spring Valley High School in South Carolina. After serving in Kuwait for nine months, Melendez returned home a week earlier than his daughter expected. He held balloons and flowers in a classroom as he sat at a student’s desk to blend in with the crowd. “It came across my mind like, ‘How is she going to react?’”he recalled the heartwarming moment. “Is she going to be happy and run to me and hug me, or cry? That was all going on through my mind.” As unsuspecting Solymar entered the classroom, she was soon overcome with emotion, immediately bursting into tears and covering her mouth. She didn’t talk. She was just crying. She was overwhelmed with everything. She thought it was a dream. Melendez was a single parent so while he was deployed(调动), he got his sister to live with his daughter. When he was coming back and talking to his sister, both of them came to the conclusion that they should do something special for his daughter. Melendez and his sister got in touch with the school, and they planned this whole being-in-the-classroom thing, and it turned out perfect. The two are very much looking forward to some good daddy-daughter time now that he’s home. “It means everything,” Melendez said of being able to surprise his daughter this way. “After all the sacrifices she’s made, she deserves all the special arrangements and special occasions and celebrations. I’ll do anything for my daughter. I believe I’m doing good parenting.” 24. How did Solymar feel at first when entering the classroom? A. She was eager to hug her father. B. To build a strong emotional bond with her. D. To make up for what she lost in her growth. 27. What can be the best title for the passage? A. Father’s Selfless Love for His Daughter. B. Girl Expecting the Returning of Her Dad C. Girl Surprised at School by Her Dad’s Return.D. Father and Daughter’s Expected Reunion C Cities are likely to be affected by overheating, thanks to something called the urban heat island effect. Cities tend to be short of trees, which provide shade, and they are covered with black pavement, which absorbs heat from the sun. Think of how it feels to wear a dark shirt versus a white shirt on a sunny day. A black shirt absorbs light, heating you up. But a white shirt reflects light, keeping you cool. The average temperature in a city of a million or more people can be more than 5°F hotter than surrounding areas. That extra 5 degrees can turn a hot day from uncomfortable to deadly. As temperatures rise, cities will be an especially dangerous place to be during a heat wave. To protect public health, city officials are going to make the city cooler. As part of that effort, Los Angeles is coating its roads in CoolSeal, a gray paint that keeps streets and parking lots 10 degrees cooler than black asphalt (沥青). It will help Angelinos save money during the summer, when air conditioning sends power bills soaring. And it will save lives by lowering temperatures and improving air quality. Hot weather worsens air pollution by turning car exhaust(废气)into smog, which can make life miserable for people with asthma(哮喘)and other breathing problems. Of course, LA will have to do more than paint over a few streets to cool off the city. Angelinos will also need to plant more trees and apply white paint to rooftops — at least those not already covered in solar panels. While LA is a pioneer of reflective streets, other cities, like New York, are already experimenting with reflective roofs or, like Melbourne, lowering the temperature by planting trees. LA is hardly alone in its effort to stay cool. “This is an urgent challenge, and it’s much bigger than one person,” said Mayor Garcetti in a recent statement. “Climate change is a fact of life that people in Los Angeles and cities around the world live with every day.” 28. Which of the following contributes to the urban heat island effect? A. Planting more trees in the streets. B. Covering the streets with white paint. C. Applying reflective paint to rooftops.D. Furnishing every house with air conditioners. 29. What should the city officials emphasize during hot summer? A. How to make the city cooler. B. Where to wear a white shirt. C. Why to coat the roads with black paint. D. When to cut off the electricity supply. 30. What benefit can people gain from the use of CoolSeal? A. Increasing the indoor activities.B. Promoting the sale of air conditioners. C. Making life easier and more comfortable.D. Reducing the number of cold days. 31. What’s the main idea of the passage? A. L.A. adopted many approaches to fight against the heat. B. L.A. calls on people to fight against global warming. C. More and more countries begin to plant trees in the streets. D. L.A. is painting its streets white to keep the city cool. D Robots will have taken over most jobs within 30 years leaving humanity facing its “biggest challenge ever” to find meaning in life when work is no longer necessary, according to experts. Professor Moshe Vardi, who works in Rice University, says that many middle-class professionals will be assisting the work of machines within the next few decades leaving workers with more leisure time than they have ever experienced and as a result, the rise of robots could lead to unemployment rates greater than 50 percent. “We are approaching a time when machines will be able to do better than humans at almost any task,” said Vardi, “Robots are doing more and more jobs that people used to do. I believe that society needs to face this question before it’s upon us. If machines can do almost any work humans can do, what will humans do? The question I want to put forward is, ‘Does the technology we are developing finally benefit mankind?’ ” Prof. Vardi said existing robotic and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies were already getting rid of a growing number of middle-class jobs and that pace of advancement in the field is increasing. But Prof. Vardi is not sure that a workforce of human like robots will be good for mankind. “A typical answer is that if machines will do all our work, we will be free to pursue leisure activities,” he said. I do not find this a promising future, as I do not find the idea of leisure-only life appealing. I believe that work is essential to human well-being.” He added, “ Humanity is about to face perhaps its greatest challenge ever, which is finding meaning in life. If machines can do all the work or even 50 percent of the jobs that we used to do, what will people do?” 32.What seems likely to happen when there is a widespread use of robots? A. There will be more workers out of work. B. People will live a meaningless life C. It’s unnecessary for everyone to work. D. Machine will replace humans in all ways. 33. What caused middle---class jobs to be removed? A. Workers’ free time. B. AI technologies. C. Society needs. D. Working efficiency. 34. What’s Prof. Vardi's attitude to the widely use of robots? A. Opposed. B. Uncaring. C. Concerned. D. Supportive. 35.What will people’s future life be like according to Prof. Vardi? A. Busy. B. Challenging. C. Appealing. D. Unattractive. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 It’s nice being nice to others; it’s also great to give people a hand. However, if you start to hurt yourself by doing so, then this is not so healthy. 36 If you fear that you might fall into this category, the following tips will help you to stand up for yourself and regain your self-confidence. 37 Although you may often stay silent if something is wrong or bothers you, it is better to speak your mind right away. You don’t have to be rude, but you do have to be firm and direct. Don’t do things for others if you don’t really want to. Speak up, and soon others will be seeing you in a whole new light. Start small. 38 This will allow you to practice being brave and self-confident. Tell a person who has cut in line in front of you to move to the back of the line, or tell a salesperson to do that. Before long, you will be confident enough to stand up to your friends and family member. Judge well. When dealing with others, you have to exercise good judgment. 39 If a colleague isn’t doing his part, you should rightfully demand that he start doing so. However, if a taxi cuts you off in traffic, just let it go. 40 Rome wasn’t built in a day. If you want to get back again after having been a pushover(耳软心活的人), it’s best to take one step at a time. A. Express yourself. B. Regain your confidence. C. Start by speaking up for yourself with strangers. D. Everyone has the right to live without being judged. E. If you slip back into the pushover mode every once in a while, don’t blame yourself. F. Sadly, some people are so easily pushed around that they come to be seen as pushovers. G. W: OK. (Text 4) W: This is delicious. Did you make it yourself? It is better than any juice I can have in a café. M: Yes, I did. It’s very simple. It tastes much nicer with a cake. The most important thing is to use really fresh fruits. (Text 5) M: Can I still check outthese books? My name’s Sandy Duffy and I’m here to tell you about my job as a video game writer. I work with game developers and designers to think of good stories, and I write all the dialogue in the game by myself. When I was in secondary school, I never imagined that I would do this job! I played the violin and that was what I planned to do as my job. But I had an accident when I was playing basketball and hurt my hand, so I had to think of doing something else. My mother wanted me to be a journalist, but I didn’t think it was for me. I didn’t know what to study at university. I was good at lots of science subjects, including Physics and Maths, but I also loved entertaining people and I was good at Art. In the end I went to a film school where I studied lighting, special effects, how to use a camera ... all that! It was there that I started to think about working in the video game industry. People also ask me what I like best about being a video game writer. Well, the money is good and it’s quite exciting. Just last night, for example, I was at a big dinner where they were giving prizes for new games. But what I love most is the fact that I get on so well with everyone in the company. That’s what makes my job so much fun. 36.C 根据前文的Here's a look at several potential traps.可知即使明智的购物者也会陷入这些陷阱中,引出下文的常见的购物陷阱与误区。 37. E 结合标题Failing to comparison shop可知本段主要讲购物时消费者若能货比三家,便会得到更低的价格。 38.
