What we offer Visitors can enjoy our displays,or watch us cleaning dinosaur bones and other fossils found on the island's beaches. The museum has a variety of different fossils, many of them never displayed to the public before. As more are discovered all the time, you can be sure of seeing something new each time you visit. We have a free Fossil Identification Service,so you can bring in any fossils you have and find out what they are. In addition,we have a reasonably-priced Museum Shop, where you can buy a souvenir of your visit. You could also bring a picnic and relax in our special picnic area. Activities Fossil hunts are organized from the museum and run all year round. Groups of up to 25are guided on a local beach where they can search for fossils. A few million years ago, the largest whales, averaged about 15 feet long. Then seemingly overnight, one type of whale, the toothless baleen whale(须鲸类)became huge. Modern blue whales get as big as 100 feet. Nicholas Pyenson of the Smithsonian Natural History Museum said, "Why is that?" "It happened in the glance of an evolutionary eye, which makes it harder to figure out what happened," said Graham Slater, lead author of the study. Their study has suggested an answer: Ice ages in the last 3 to 5 million years started it, changing the oceans and food supply for whales. The researchers used fossil records of the smaller whales to create a family tree for baleen whales which include blue whales, humpbacks and right whales. Using computer simulations(模拟)and knowledge about how evolution works, they concluded that when the size changes started, the poles got colder, ice expanded and the water circulation in the oceans changed and winds shifted, Slater and Pyenson said cold water went deep and moved closer to the equator(赤道)and then eventually moved back up with small fish and other small animals that whales eat. Baleen whale, which have no teeth, feed by eating huge amounts of fish they capture. Toothed whales, like sperm whales (抹香鲸), hunt individual fish, so the ocean chants that made food less evenly spread out didn't affect them as much. But baleen whales hunt schools of fish. Olivier Lambert at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences calls it "a really convincing situation". But he said the lack of fossils in certain time periods is an issue. As oceans warm from man-made climate change, the seas will be more like it was when the whales smaller and they will have a more difficult time surviving. 8.What does the author mean by "It happened in the glance of an evolutionary eye" in the second paragraph? A. The change of baleen whales happened too quickly. B. The change of baleen whales was too difficult to explore. C. Researchers paid little attention to the change of baleen whales. D. Researchers thought the change of baleen whales was unimportant. 9.What played the key role in baleen whales' becoming huge? A. Man-made climate change. B. Its eating a huge amount of fish. C. The water circulation in the oceans. D. The increase of food supply for whales. 10.What do we know about sperm whales and blue whales according to the text? A. Sperm whales eat more food. B. Blue whaler live much longer. C. Sperm whales prefer to hunt schools of fish. D. Blue whales usually swallow schools of fish. 11.What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. There are no whale fossils now. B. The whales may become even bigger. C. Global warming has threatened the whales. D. Olivier Lamber thinks the study is perfect. D No poem should ever be discussed or “analyzed”, until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears. All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling(生动的)“interpretation” of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on film, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching can not replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting it. I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than “analyzing” it, if there isn’t time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is “a criticism of life”, and “a heightening of life”.It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies. I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don’t like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it. 12. To have a better understanding of a poem, one should _____. A. discuss it with others B. analyze it by oneself C. practice reading it aloud D. copy it down in a notebook 13. According to the writer, one of the purposes of teaching English is to get students _____. A. to enjoy poetry B. to understand life C. to become teacher D. to become poets 14.The underlined word "make room "( in the last paragraph)probably means ____. A. to build a booth B. to provide equipment C. to set aside enough space D. to leave a certain amount of time 15. What does the last sentence in the third paragraph imply? A.Poetry is more important than any other subject. B.More stress should be laid on the teaching of poetry. C.One cannot enjoy life fully without an understanding of poetry. D.Poetry is the foundation of all language and literature courses. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 What To Do When You Break Your Smartphone?
