课时跟踪练40 Unit 5 Meeting your ancestors Ⅰ.阅读理解 A A letter written by Charles Darwin in 1875 has been returned to the Smithsonian Institution Archives(档案馆)by the FBI after being stolen twice. “We realized in the mid1970s that it was missing,” says Effie Kapsalis, head of the Smithsonian Institution Archives.“It was noted as missing and likely taken by an intern(实习生),from what the FBI is telling us.Word got out that it was missing when someone asked to see the letter for research purposes, and the intern put the letter back. The intern likely took the letter again once nobody was watching it.” Decades passed. Finally, the FBI received a tip that the stolen document was located very close to Washington,DC.Their art crime team recovered the letter but as unable to press charges because the time of limitations had ended. The FBI worked closely with the Archives to determine that the letter was both authentic and definitely Smithsonian's property. The letter was written by Darwin to thank an American geologist,Dr Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden, for sending him copies of his research into the geology of the region that would become Yellowstone National Park. The letter is in fairly good condition,in spite of being out of the care of trained museum staff for so long.“It was luckily in good shape,”says Kapsalis.“And we just have to do some minor things in order to be able to unfold it.It has some glue on it that has coloured it slightly, but nothing that will prevent us from using it.After it is repaired,we will take digital photos of it and that will be available online. One of our goals is to get items of high research value or interest to the public online.” It would now be difficult for an intern,a visitor or a thief to steal a document like this.“Archiving practices have changed greatly since the 1970s,”says Kapsalis,“and we keep our high value documents in a safe that I don't even have access to.” 1.What happened to Darwin's letter in the mid1970s? Nowadays there is less and less contact between the old and the young. There are many reasons for this, including the breakdown of the extended family, working parents with no time to care for aging relations, and smaller flats with no room for grandparents. But the result is the same:increasing numbers of children without grandparents and old people who have no contact with children. It's a major problem in many societies. That's why intergenerational(代际的)programmes are growing in popularity all over the world. There are examples of successful actions all over the world.Using young people to teach IT skills to older people is one obvious example.Using old people as volunteer assistants in schools is another. One successful scheme in London pairs young volunteers with old people who are losing their sight. The young people help with practical things such as writing letters, reading bank statements and helping with shopping, and the older people can pass on their knowledge and experience to their young visitors. For example,a retired judge may be paired with a teenager who wants to study law. But it isn't only the individuals concerned who gain from intergenerational activities. The advantages to society are huge too.If older people can understand and accept the youth of today, there will be less conflict in a community. And we can - 9 - use the strengths of one generation to help another. Then perhaps getting old won't be so sad after all. 5.Why does the author mention the newspaper article he read? A.To argue for a new concept. B.To show his interest in the topic. C.To introduce the topic of the text. D.To draw our attention to a social problem. 6.What is the purpose of the intergenerational programmes? A.To provide a good job opportunity for the young. B.To bring the old and the young together. C.To teach the young to respect the old. D.To ask the old to care for the young. 7.What may be the best title for the text? A.Building Bridges for the Old and the Young B.A New Concept in Caring for the Old Is Born C.Offering a Warm Home for the Young D.Being Old Is No More Sad 【语篇解读】 本文介绍了一种新思维,那就是在孩子们的生活和老年人的生活之间架起一座桥梁,这样既解决了老人孤独的问题,又缓解了孩子们不能被充分照顾之忧,一举两得,从而满足了双方的需要。 5. 据文章第二段中的“Nowadays there is less and less contact between the old and the young.” 答案:A Ⅱ.完形填空 The Horse Hug - 9 - In 2009,I rescued a distrustful horse.Bo came from a nearby farm and now lives peacefully on mine with another horse and two dogs. But the 1 to Bo's successful recovery from a nervous victim to a happy animal was nothing I did.It was my grandson,Dylan.
