If so, Judith Rich Harris has good news for you. Parents, she argues, have no important long -term effects on the development of the personality of their children. Far more important are their playground friends and neighborhood. Ms. Harris takes to hitting the assumption, which has dominated(支配) developmental psychology for almost half a century.‎ ‎ Ms. Harris's attack on the developmental psychologists’ "nurture" (养育)argument looks likely to reinforce(加强) doubts that the profession was already having. If parents matter, why is it that two adopted children, brought up in the same home, are no more similar in personality than two adopted children brought up in separate homes? Or that a pair of identical twins, brought up in the same home, are no more alike than a pair of identical(完全相同的) twins brought up in different homes?‎ ‎ Difficult as it is to track the clear effects of parental upbringing, it may be harder to measure the exact influence of the peer(同龄人) group in childhood and adolescence. Ms. Harris points to how children from immigrant homes soon learn not to speak at school in the way their parents speak. But acquiring a language is surely a skill, rather than a characteristic of the sort developmental psychologists hunt for. Certainly it is different from growing up tensely or relaxed, or from learning to be honest or hard -working or generous. Easy though it may be to prove that parents have little impact on those qualities, it will be hard to prove that peers have vastly more.‎ ‎ Moreover, mum and dad surely cannot be ignored completely. Young adults may, as Ms. Harris argues, be keen to appear like their peers. But even in those early years, parents have the power to open doors: they may choose the peers with whom their young associate, and pick that influential neighborhood. Moreover, most people suspect that they come to resemble their parents more in middle age. So the balance of influences is probably complicated. Even if it turns out that the genes they pass on and the friends their children play with matter as much as affection, discipline and good example, parents are not completely off the hook ‎56. According to Ms. Harris,______.‎ ‎ A. parents are to blame for any bad behavior of their children ‎ B. children's personality is largely shaped by their friends and neighbors ‎ C. nature rather than nurture has a significant effect on children' s personality development ‎ D. parents will affect greatly the children's life in the long run ‎57. The developmental psychologists think _________. ‎ ‎ A. twins raised in two separate families are different in personality ‎ B. identical twins raised in the same home are different in personality ‎ C. children are more influenced by their peers ‎ D. upbringing has a less significant effect on children’s personality development ‎58. According to Paragraph 3, we know that ___________. ‎ ‎ A. it is easier for children to gain a language at home ‎ B. it is harder to follow the effects of parental upbringing ‎ C. immigrant children avoid speaking the same way as their parents at school ‎ D. it is proved that peers have a greater effect on children’s qualities ‎59. What does the author mean by saying parents are not completely off the hook at the end of the passage?‎ ‎ A. Parents should control the situation.‎ ‎ B. Parents should give their way to children.‎ ‎ C. Parents should spend more time on children.‎ ‎ D. Parents should take on their responsibility.‎ B Instagram is a fast, beautiful and fun way to share your life with friends and family. Take a picture or video, choose a filter to transform its look and feel, and then post to Instagram—it’s that easy. You can even share to Facebook, Twitter and more. It’s a new way to see the world. So many photos of food are contained on Instagram—now a pop-up diner in London is taking advantage of this new trend by letting people settle the bill for their meals simply by uploading photos of their dishes to social networks.‎ ‎ I always thought people’s taking pictures of their food was kind of silly, but at this new pop-up restaurant in the UK, I’d probably do it too. “The Picture House” is the world’s first pay-by-photo restaurant. You order, click a photo of the food, share on Instagram and eat for free!‎ ‎ The restaurant belongs to frozen food giant(巨人)Birds Eye, who came up with the idea to cash in on people’s addiction with photographing food and sharing the pictures online. They conducted a survey and found out that more than half of the British population regularly took pictures of their meals. So they realized it was a better way to advertise their new dining range.‎ ‎ The pop-up diner was open in Soho,London for three days in May, and is now moving to other major UK cities. They serve two-course meals that customers don’t have to pay for, if they photo and Instagram it.‎ ‎ The restaurant is a part of Birds Eye’s “Food for Life” campaign, a new marketing project that aims at changing the way people look at frozen food. “Taking photos of food enables people to show off and to share their mealtime moments—from the everyday to the special,”said marketing director Margaret Jobling.‎ ‎ The reaction to the Picture House has been great so far And the pay-by-picture concept has proven to be an effective way. Alternative payment methods are actually gaining popularity among a lot of businesses. Last year in a cafe in Germany customers pay by how much time they spend there, not by what they eat.‎ ‎60. What can we infer from the passage?‎ ‎  A. The Picture House was opened in Scotland ‎  B. Lots of British people like taking photos of their meals.‎ ‎  C. No Need to Pay C Just weeks after a special memorial voyage to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, an Australian billionaire has announced plans to build an exact replica(复制品) of the Titanic, which is just as similar to the original one as possible. The Titanic replica will make its first voyage from Southampton, England to New York in 2016.‎ ‎ The Titanic is a famous ship that sank in 1912. The attractive story of the ocean liner(邮轮) has made millions of people interested in it around the world. It was believed to be an unsinkable ship but it hit an iceberg and sank on its first voyage. More than 1,500 people died in the sinking of the Titanic, which at the time was the world’s largest and most luxurious ocean liner. ‎ ‎ When fully built, the Titanic II will be 270 meters (886 feet) long and capable of holding 1,680 passengers. Unlike the original Titanic which was powered by coal-fired boiler and steam engines, the Titanic II will have modern diesel(柴油机) and electric engines. Also unlike the first Titanic, the Titanic II will have more than enough lifeboats to accommodate everyone on board if something should go wrong. ‎ ‎ When asked whether the new replica would sink, Mr. Palmer replied: “Of course it will sink if you put a hole in it. He also added “It will be designed as a modern ship with all the technology to ensure that doesn’t happen.”‎ ‎ When Mr. Palmer was asked if he expected his Titanic to be successful, he simply said: “At my age, you don’t really worry so much about whether you’ll make money or lose money on something, but I believe that it is worth building it.”‎ ‎64. Why is the Titanic replica being built?‎ ‎ A. To make a voyage from Southampton, England to New York. ‎ ‎ B. Not clearly talked about in the passage.‎ ‎ C. The appearance of Titanic II will be more luxurious.‎ ‎ C. Titanic II will be powered by modern diesel and electric engines.‎ ‎ D. The number of the lifeboats on Titanic II will be smaller.‎ ‎67. What is Mr. Palmer’s attitude towards his Titanic II replica?‎ ‎ A. It is worthwhile to build it.                B. It will definitely be a great success.‎ ‎ C. It will sink with a hole in it                       D. It will make him lose money.‎ D Elderly people are growing healthier, happier and more independent, say American scientists. The results of a 14-year study to be announced later this month reveal that the diseases associated with old age are affecting fewer and fewer people and when they do suffer a stroke (中风), it is much later in their life.‎ ‎ In the last 14 years, the National Long-term Care Survey has gathered data on the health and lifestyles of more than 20,000 men and women over 65 Researchers, now analyzing the results of data gathered in 1994, say arthritis, high blood pressure and circulation problems — the major medical complaints in this age group — are troubling a smaller proportion every year. And the data confirms that the rate at which these diseases are declining continues to increase. Other diseases of old age — dementia, strokes, arteriosclerosis and emphysema — are also troubling fewer and fewer people.‎ ‎ “It really raises the question of what should be considered normal ageing,” says Kenneth Manton, a demographer (人口学家) from Duke University in North Carolina. He says the problems doctors accepted as normal in a 65-year-old in 1982 are often not appearing until people are 70 or 75.‎ ‎ Clearly, certain diseases are beating a retreat in the face of medical advances. But there may be other contributing factors. Improvements in childhood nutrition in the first quarter of the twentieth century, for example, gave today’s elderly people a better start in life than their former generations.‎ On the downside, an increase in some cancers and bronchitis may reflect changing smoking habits and poorer air quality, say the researchers. "These may be subtle influences," says Manton, "but our subjects have been exposed to worse and worse pollution for over 60 years. It’s not surprising we see some effect."‎ ‎ One interesting correlation Manton uncovered is that better-educated people are likely to live longer. For example, 65-year-old women with fewer than eight years of schooling are expected, on average, to live to 82. Those who continued their education live an extra seven years. Although some of this can be attributed to a higher income, Manton believes it is mainly because educated people seek more medical attention.‎ ‎ The survey also assessed how independent people over 65 were, and again found a striking trend. Almost 80% of those in the 1994 survey could complete everyday activities ranging from eating and dressing unaided to complex tasks such as cooking and managing their finances. That represents a significant drop in the number of disabled old people in the population. According to Manton, slowing the trend has saved the United States government’s medicare system more than $200 billion, suggesting that the ageing of America’s population may prove less of a financial burden than expected.‎ ‎ But independence can have drawbacks. Scientists found that elderly people who felt emotionally isolated maintained higher levels of stress hormones even when asleep. The research suggests that older people live best when they feel independent but know they can get help when they need it.‎ ‎68. What is the main topic of this passage?‎ A.The common health problems of elderly people in the US.‎ B.A healthier, happier and more independent ageing population in the US.‎ C.The influence of medical advances on elderly people’s health in the US.‎ D.The relationship between good education and the length of time one lives.‎ ‎69. What makes demographers begin to wonder about the standard of normal ageing?‎ A.People’s growing healthier. B.People’s living longer.‎ C.The abnormally increasing population.D.More deadly diseases’ being curable.‎ ‎70. Which of the following is NOT considered as a contributor to elderly people getting healthier?‎ A.Medical improvement.                               B.Good childhood nutrition.‎ C.Change of air quality.                                 D.Better education.‎ ‎71. What is the main reason for better-educated people to live longer according to Manton?‎ A.They maintain a lower level of stress.‎ B.They have learnt more about medical care.‎ C.They have a higher income to support themselves.‎ D.They pay much more attention to their physical health.‎ ‎72. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?‎ A.80% of elderly people in the US could handle everyday activities independently.‎ B.A large number of disabled old people used to be a financial burden to the US.‎ C.Elderly people who live independently have a more positive state of mind.‎ D.It is not advised for elderly people to live independently.‎ E H.T.B.
