B If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak;when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again.Everybody knows that.Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory,he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it.When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong. If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak.we know that it is his fault(过 错).But if he tells us that he has a poor memory.many of us think that his parents are to blame(责备),and few of us know that it is just his own fault. Have you ever found that some people can’t read or write but they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write and they have to remember things;they cannot write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories;so their memory is the whole time being exercised. So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people:practise remembering. 4.Someone can’t have a good memory if _________. A.He can’t read or write . B.he does not use his memory often. C.his parents haven’t got a good memory. D.he doesn’t use his arms or legs for some time . 5.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.Your memory doesn’t work in the same way as your arms or legs. B.Your memory ,like your arms or legs, becomes weak if you don’t give it enough chance for practice. C.Don’t learn how to read and write if you want to have a better memory. D.A good memory comes from less practice. 6.Few people know that it is only ______ if a friend has a poor memory . A.his own fault B.his parents’ fault C.his teachers’ fault D. his grandmother’s fault 7. The writer of this passage wants to tell us _______. A.how to use our arms or legs . B. how to read and write. C.how to have a good memory . D.how to learn from other people. C Studying for any standardized test can be stressful, especially when English is your second language.Believe it or not, there is only one way to “beat ” the test. When I stayed in the US to advance my education further, getting a satisfactory GRE score proved a difficult challenge. My first practice test score was atrocious, especially for the verbal section. A friend of mine recommended memorizing 5000 words that were likely to show up in the verbal section. It might not make sense, but I was willing to give it a try. After months after studying the words, it was time for me to take the actual test to see if I had made any progress. Sadly, my results showed the opposite ---my test score actually dropped. That’s when someone recommended to me another way to beat the GRE. Apparently, students who had taken the test were memorizing the questions and then posting them online. A look at one of these websites and I could have access to questions and answers that might end up on my actual test. The question-sharing website my friend was offering me was really attraction.Thank goodness the first page I came to was completely in Korean, a language I don’t speak at all. I couldn’t have used the site even if I wanted to. At that point the thought of getting caught by the ETS crossed my mine, and I realized how much worse that would be than getting a low score. Then I decided to stick to a more traditional method--constant and regular practice. I started reviewing the methods I was learning in my GRE class and working on practice tests. And guess what ? These approaches eventually proved to be effective. I started to see steady progress in my test scores. 8.What does the underlined word “atrocious” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A.Very bad. B.Astonishing. C .Rather hard D. Very average. 9. When one friend of the authors’ recommended memorizing 5000 words, the author____ A . felt grateful B. felt cheated C. rejected the advice D. doubted the advice . 10.Unable to use the site his friend offered him, the author felt _____. A .afraid B. lucky C. regretful D. discouraged. 11.What is probably the only one way to “beat” the test according to the author? A .Practice. B. Training centre. C.The question-sharing website. D. Memorizing possible questions. D Just a few months ago, Leo Grand’s life was terrible. Homeless since losing his job in 2011, he spent his days begging and nights sleeping on the streets of Manhattan’s West side. Then last summer, a young man made him a strange offer that changed his life. 24-year-old software engineer Patrick McConlogue, who had been seeing the 38-year-old homeless man for three years on his way to work every morning, asked Leo whether he would like $100 to spend on anything he wished or learn how to code (编码). Leo picked the latter. True to his word, Patrick returned the following day with a few books on the subject, a cheap but durable laptop computer and charging accessories, and most importantly, daily lessons every morning before McConlogue was due at his office. Regardless, Leo took the opportunity to learn, Patrick followed through on his promise, and a friendship was born. Leo turned out to be a fast learner. After a few months of strict learning how to code, the two men released Trees For Cars , a ride share app that Leo coded all by himself. The mobile app allows people to help the environment and save money by carpooling (拼车). It works as follows: Anyone wanting a ride can enter in the address of his or her destination. The app will suggest drivers that drive to that or a nearby location. The person wishing to get a ride can pick one and send an invitation. If the other person accepts, they will be connected. As a way to encourage users, the app tracks how much CO2 is saved by the passengers who get rides with others. Trees For Cars saw about 15,000 downloads across both Apple and Android stores, bringing in about $14,000. Various cuts to the stores/platforms themselves add up to about 30%, and the rest go to Leo. While this is an amazing achievement, neither of them is satisfied with what they have done. Leo has already begun working on the second version of the app and also plans to apply for a job as a programmer. As for Patrick, he is trying to expand the tutoring program and already has 150 programmers willing to teach people to code for an hour a day for two months. All he needs to do now is work out how to organize the effort. 12.What did Leo choose to do when given help? A. To get $100 to spend. B. To read a few books on the subject C.To learn how to code. D. To buy a cheap but durable laptop computer. 13. The app Trees For Cars was designed in order to _________. A. make a big fortune to help needy people B. encourage riders to share cars with others C.give directions about how to go to a location D. calculate the amount of CO2 around the users 14. How much money has Leo earned for Trees For Car? A. About $15,000 B. About $10,000 C. About $4,000 D. About $14,000 15. Which of the following words can best describe Patrick McConlogue? A.
