Bostjan Ljubic, vice president of Steelcase, a workplace solutions company that analyzed the findings of neuroscientists(神经学家) and cognitive((认知的) researchers, said: “Employers are always on the lookout for the brightest people available, however the difficulty to withstand multiple tasks and distractions in the office affects smart people in the same way as everyone else, if not more.” The smartest individuals may find it more difficult to decide which ideas to prioritize(区分优先次序) with distraction leading to feeling of inability to deal with the work as a whole. The smartest brains can finally fall short of their own expected potential, as well as failing to live up to their employer's hopes.” Nearly half of more than 10,000 workers surveyed in 17 countries, said they struggled to concentrate in the office, according to a health study by Steelcase. The University of California suggests that the average office worker is interrupted or distracted every three minutes. The Bike Experience was formed in April 2011, as there was no project in existence that taught disabled motorcyclists how to ride. Over a period of five years, the initial idea has become a registered charity. Over 75 disabled motorcyclists have learned to ride again and the concept has started to influence the motorsport world. In March, 2003, Talan Skeels-Piggins, the founder of the charity, was knocked off his motorcycle and thrown under the path of the oncoming traffic. The accident left him paralyzed(瘫痪的)from the chest down and he thought he would never ride a motorcycle again. Eight years later, Talan was back riding a motorbike on UK track days and felt the importance of teaching others how to do the same. Talan says, “When I am riding, I do not feel disabled. I feel free from my wheelchair, and I enjoy the sense of excitement and independence just as I used to. Getting to this point has been a struggle, but it has been worth it. I wanted to help other disabled motorcyclists have the fantastic feeling of being back on a bike, without the falls and setbacks I suffered, so The Bike Experience Charity was established. To tell us a successful story of a disabled person D At home, ordering food from a menu is a normal, everyday routine. I don’t even give it a second thought. In China, it’s a whole other story! Here, ordering is a fun game of trial and error, and the adventure begins before the food is even served! Many restaurants in central Beijing advertise “English language menus”, but the translations can just add to the confusion. Although accompanying pictures can be a helpful relief, the translations often make the whole experience even more amusing. During my first few weeks in China I tried some delicious dishes with off-the-wall names. As an experiment, my friends and I would order things like “students addicted to chicken gristle (软骨)” and “red burned lion head”. It was always fun to see what landed on our table. Eventually we learned that “lion head” was actually pork, and “students” are “addicted” to diced chicken with green pepper. Recently, I came across a busy restaurant down a narrow side street in a Beijing hutong. It was lunchtime and the small room was packed with people sitting on small stools eating noodles. I was hungry and cold, and the steaming bowls looked irresistible! I sat myself down and called out for a “caidan!” In response, the waitress pointed to a wall at the back of the restaurant. The wall was full of Chinese characters describing numerous dishes. There was only one sentence in English: “crossing over the bridge noodles”. I had never heard of the dish and had no idea what it would taste like. I took a gamble and ordered one bowl of “crossing over the bridge noodles”. A few minutes later the waitress carried over a heavy bowl full of broth (肉汤) and I quickly dug in. It was the best bowl of noodles I had ever tasted! I have been back again and again and each time I point at the one English sentence “crossing over the bridge noodles”. I always enter a restaurant in China feeling excited and a little nervous. Who knows what the next ordering adventure will show? 32.How does the writer find the English-language menus in many of Beijing’s restaurants? A. Easy to understand. B. Confusing but amusing. C. Boring and annoying. D. Accurate and helpful. 33.The underlined word “gamble” in the last paragraph probably means ______. A. taste B. look C. step D. risk 34.The passage deals with ______. A. the author’s favorite Chinese dishes B. comparison between Western food and Chinese food C. the fun the author had ordering food in China’s restaurant D. the correct way to translate the names of Chinese dishes into English 35.The passage is developed mainly in the form of _____________. A. examples and statements B. causes and effects C. comparison and conclusion D. time and description 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 National Symbols When many people in the west think of China, the animal that they think of is the dragon. 36 Many popular legends tell of how dragons killed brave knights and ate beautiful maidens. For Chinese people, however, the dragon is not an evil monster. 37 The dragon’s main task is to create harmony and bring rain. Dragons are celebrated in art and architecture, and of course the dragon dance is a very popular ritual. Millions of Chinese have the word “long”, meaning dragon, as part of their name. ____38 Wales, one of the four countries in the UK, has a red dragon proudly displayed on its flag. The only other country in the world with a dragon on its flag is Bhutan, the tiny country, between China and India. Almost all countries in the world have an animal symbol represent the country, and it is particularly obvious during sports. The English see lions as brave, proud animals and the England football teams have three lions on the front of their football shirts. 39 The national rugby team is more commonly known as the Wallabies, a kind of small kangaroo. All countries are proud of their symbols, which they feel reflect national characteristics. Recently, a professor claimed that using the dragon as a national symbol could make western countries have a negative view of China. ___40 As Chinese culture attains its worldwide popularity, people in the west will no doubt want China to keep the dragon too. A. Australia is famous for kangaroos, of course. B. There are many other countries to use animal symbols. C. China isn’t the only country to have the dragon as its symbol. D. In order to better your understanding of Chinese literature, I think, Journey to the West, one of the four great classical novels, will make the best choice. Journey to the West, written by Wu Chengen in The 16th century during Ming Dynasty, is telling a story about Priest Tang and his three animal followers with human characteristics. They travelled west to India, confronted with/ braving/overcoming numerous difficulties but finally attained true Buddhist scriptures. Priest Tang or Xuan Zang is a true figure in history but a controversial character in the novel. Seemingly stubborn, weak and incompetent, Priest Tang played an important role in keeping the team united and brining out people’s kindness and humanity. You are bound to enjoy yourself while reading the novel and you’re welcome to share with me your opinions whenever you like. Yours, Li Hua查看更多
