But, there was always the same story heard from his lips whenever he talked to you: I will achieve some big things in my life and I will get most of them soon. I saw him occasionally and each time he spoke like before. But he still hadn't taken one step to complete any of his dreams—no actions at all.‎ You can guess what happened next. As the years passed by, I went on my way to several new adventures in business, but he remained where he was. The last thing I heard of him just before I moved away was that he was ill and couldn’t get around.‎ Recently I spoke with an old friend about this man. Not that long ago he passed away. I asked whether he had taken action towards any of his many dreams. The sad answer was no.‎ When I think of this man, I wish he understood what Albert Einstein said, “The value of achievement lies in the achieving.”‎ This man achieved nothing of his dreams. He lacked the preparation and action. There is no achievement made through a dream unless there is dedicated movement, action steps, and perseverance to continue.‎ There are several points here that can make the difference between dreaming and achieving. Without a solid and detailed plan for each step, you will spend your entire lifetime dreaming. Besides, in order to accomplish a dream, action must be taken .You also need to consider through any adventure in life whatever that decision is. There are always risks associated with any decision and choice. There are absolutely no guarantees that your choice ends up being the best one.‎ But, you will never know where a dream will end up unless you do something. Or, you will go through life always wondering what would have happened if you had taken action and not just simply talked.‎ ‎24.What does the author want to tell us?‎ A. Doing is better than saying. He laughed at the man. B. He was the man’s colleague.‎ C. He worked hard and was successful. D. He once advised the man to start business.‎ ‎26.Why did the author mention Albert Einstein in the text?‎ A. To show the key to inventing. B. To show the cost of achievement.‎ C. To show the importance of taking action. D. To show Albert Einstein’s great achievements.‎ ‎27. What may be the best title of the text?‎ A. Dream to the End B. Achieve all, Achieve None C.A man who Achieved Nothing D. Do something to Achieve Success C Bad news sells. If it bleeds, it leads. No news is good news, and good news is no news. Those are the classic rules for the evening broadcasts and the morning papers. But now that information is being spread and monitored in different ways, researchers are discovering new rules. By tracking people’s e-mails and online posts, scientists have found that good news can spread faster and farther than disasters and sob stories.‎ ‎“The ‘if it bleeds’ rule works for mass media,” says Jonah Berger, a scholar at the University‎ of ‎Pennsylvania. “They want your eyeballs and don’t care how you’re feeling. But when you share a story with your friends, you care a lot more how they react. You don’t want them to think of you as a Debbie Downer.”‎ Researchers analyzing word-of-mouth communication—e-mails, Web posts and reviews, face-to-face conversations—found that it tended to be more positive than negative, but that didn’t necessarily mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news shared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things? To test for that possibility, Dr. Berger looked at how people spread a particular set of news stories: thousands of articles on The New York Times’ website. He and a Penn colleague analyzed the “most e-mailed” list for six months. One of his first findings was that articles in the science section were much more likely to make the list than non-science articles. He found that science amazed Times’ readers and made them want to share this positive feeling with others. ‎ Readers also tended to share articles that were exciting or funny, or that inspired negative feelings like anger or anxiety, but not articles that left them merely sad. They needed to be aroused one way or the other, and they preferred good news to bad. The more positive an article, the more likely it was to be shared, as Dr. Berger explains in his new book, “Contagious: Why Things Catch On.” ‎ ‎28 .What do the classic rules mentioned in the text apply to?‎ A. News reports.      B. Research papers.  C .Private e-mails.   D. Daily conversations.‎ ‎29. What can we infer about people like Debbie Downer?‎ A. They’re socially inactive.       B. They’re good at telling stories.‎ C. They’re inconsiderate of others.  D. They’re careful with their words.‎ ‎30.Which tended to be the most e-mailed according to Dr. Berger’s research?‎ A . Sports new.      B. Science articles. C. Personal accounts.    D. Financial reviews.‎ ‎31 .What can be a suitable title for the text?‎ A. Sad Stories Travel Far and Wide     B .Online News Attracts More People C. Reading Habits Change with the Times D. Good News Beats Bad on Social Networks D Have you ever been given something you don’t like or doesn’t fit, but you don’t want to hurt the feelings of the person who thinks about you? You’re not alone. Everyone has received an unwanted gift at least once in his or her life. That doesn’t mean the item is bad or useless. It simply means that it doesn’t work for you.‎ If you find yourself with something nice but that doesn’t fit into your lifestyle, consider regifting it. Before you do that, make sure you understand the manners of this practice that is more and more common as people find it difficult to make ends meet to a great extent.‎ There are specific things you should do to an item. Failure to do any of them may create an awkward situation. You never have to lie about what you are doing, but you don’t want to be in the position of having to explain anything. For example, remove the original wrapping paper and rewrap it in your own; make sure the box is in good condition so the item doesn’t appear used; check the item and make sure there are no cards or names on the packaging; inspect the item and make sure it is in excellent condition.‎ When you get ready for regifting, consider having a white elephant gift exchange for your next celebration. This removes all the embarrassment of being caught regifting because that’s the whole purpose of the event. In order to prevent hurting feelings, provide everyone with a guest list and ask them not to bring anything given by the people on that list.‎ ‎32. Why does the author begin the passage with a question?‎ A. To share a hot phenomenon. B. To introduce the following part.‎ C. To ask for readers’ answers. D. To point out a common opinion.‎ ‎33. What most contributes to the growing regifting?‎ A. People’s lack of money. B. People’s dislike of the gifts. ‎ C. People’s reduced desire for gifts. D. People’s understanding of its manners.‎ ‎34. What’s mainly talked about in Paragraph 3?‎ A. What to do before regifting. B. How to make use of unwanted gifts. ‎ C. What kind of gifts to be regifted. D. Why regifting can cause embarrassment.‎ ‎35. What does the underlined phrase in the last paragraph mean?‎ A. Suitable but valueless. B. Expensive and useful. ‎ C. Packaged and invaluable. D. Nice but unsuitable.‎ 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Next time you raise an eyebrow at the views of your partner, friend, sibling or colleague, remember they could be helping to make you smarter. A new research shows that intelligence is not fixed but can be boosted throughout adulthood by family members, bright mates and intellectually stretching careers.‎ Inspiring family circle where people talk, make jokes and challenge each other can boost IQ levels by several points. 36_______. ‎ The study challenges the commonly held notion that intelligence is stable by the age of about 18. Current scientific consensus suggests that intelligence is controlled by genes, with environmental factors such as schooling and nutrition playing a part up to this age. 37_______. But James Flynn, professor of political studies and psychology at the University of Otago in New Zealand, argues that people can ‘upgrade’ their own intelligence throughout their lives. He believes intellectual stimulation from others is crucial as the brain seems to be rather like a muscle. 38_______. ‎ ‎39_______. So people who share a home or workplace with the simpleminded risk seeing their IQ levels drop as a result. Professor Flynn concluded that although genetics and early life experiences determine about 80 percent of intelligence, the remaining 20 percent is linked to lifestyle. 40_______. The best way to boost IQ levels is to socialize with bright friends, find an intellectually challenging job and marry someone cleverer. ‎ A. However, the contrary is also true ‎ B. Jobs that mentally energize employees function as well. ‎ C. The more you use it, the stronger it gets. ‎ D. After this point, IQ scores stabilize. ‎ E. Special educational treatments can make a difference. ‎ F. Children with a low IQ could gain six to eight points by having brighter siblings. G.
