A. a textbook B. a report C. a science magazine D. a travel guide B Old Mrs. Tailor was hanging out laundry on a wire line outside her shabby cottage, unaware that some children lay hidden in the leaves of a nearby tree watching her every move. They were determined to find out if she really was a witch. They watched as she took a broomstick to clean the dirt from her stone steps. But, much to their disappointment, she did not mount the broomstick and take flight. Suddenly, the old lady's work was interrupted by the cackling of her hen—a signal that an egg had been laid in the warm nest on top of the haystack. The old broomstick was put aside as she hobbled off towards the haystack followed by Sooty, a black cat she had rescued from a fox trap some time back. The cat following the aged lady provided proof—the children were sure that only a witch could own a black cat with three legs. There, standing on a wooden box, was Mrs. Tailor, stretching out to gather her precious egg. Taking the egg in one of her hands, she began to climb down when, without warning, the box broke and the old lady fell. "We have to go and help her," whispered Amy. "What if it is a trick?" replied Ben. "Don't be silly, Ben. If she were a witch, she would have turned us into frogs already," reasoned Meg. "Come on Amy, let's go." The girls climbed down the tree and ran all the way to the haystack. Approaching carefully, they could see a wound on the old lady's face. She had knocked her head on a stone and her ankle was definitely broken. "Go and get Dad," Amy yelled to her brother. "Tell him about the accident." The boys did not need another excuse to leave. They ran as fast as they could for help, hoping that Mrs. Tailor would not wake and turn the girls into frogs. 25. The children hid in the tree in order to_____. A. watch Mrs. Tailor do her housework closely. B. find out whether Mrs. Tailor was a witch. C. play a hide-and-seek game. D. steal something from the old lady. 26. Mrs. Tailor stopped sweeping when _____. A. she heard the hen cackling B. her front steps were clean C. she noticed the children in the tree D. she was ready to take a flight 27. What does the underlined part “hobbled off” mean? A. hurried off B. rushed out C. walked difficultly D. walked quickly 28. What did the boys have in mind when asked to get their dad for help? A. They were unwilling to leave Mrs. Tailor. B. It’s a good excuse for them to get away. C. They still need one more excuse to leave. D. They were worried about Mrs. Tailor. C Both men and women are living longer these days in industrialized countries. However, women on average, live longer. In general, they can expect to live six or seven years more than men. One reason for this is biological. One important biological factor that helps women live longer is the difference in hormones between men and women. Hormones are chemicals which are produced by the body to control various body functions. Between the ages of about 12 and 50, women produce hormones that are involved in fertility(生育能力). These hormones also have a positive effect on the heart and blood flow. In fact, women are less likely to have high blood pressure or to die from heart attacks. The female hormones also protect the body in another way. They help the body defend itself against some kinds of infections. This means that women generally get sick less often and less seriously than men. The common cold is a good example: women, on average, get fewer colds than men. Women are also helped by their female genes. Scientists are still not exactly sure how genes influence aging, but they believe that they do. Some think that a woman’s body cells have a tendency(向) to age more slowly than a man’s. Others think that a man’s body cells have a tendency to age more quickly. Recent research seems to support both of these possibilities. 29. Which of the following statements about the female hormones is not true? A. They have a good effect on women’s heart. B. They contribute to blood flow of females. C. They help women’s bodies defend themselves against infections. D. They cause women to die from heart attacks. 30. What does the underlined word “they” in the last paragraph refer to? A. scientists B. hormones C. women D. genes 31. The passage is mainly about_____. A. Why women lives longer than men B. What women do to live longer C. How hormones affect women’s health D. How genes influence aging D Ireland has had a very difficult history. The problems started in the 16th century when English rulers tried to conquer (征服) Ireland. For hundreds of years, the Irish people fought against the English. Finally, in 1921, the British government was forced to give independence to the south of Ireland. The result is that today there are two "Irelands". Northern Ireland, in the north, is part of the United Kingdom. The republic of Ireland, in the south, is an independent country. In the 1840s the main crop, potatoes, was affected by disease and about 750,000 people died of hunger. This, and a shortage (短缺) of work, forced many people to leave Ireland and live in the USA, the UK, Australia and Canada. As a result of these problems, the population fell from 8.2 million in 1841 to 6.6 million in 1851. For many years, the majority of Irish people earned their living as farmers. Today, many people still work on the land but more and more people are moving to the cities to work in factories and offices. Life in the cities is very different from life in the countryside, where things move at a quieter and slower pace. The Irish are famous for being warm-hearted and friendly, Oscar Wilde, a famous Irish writer, once said that the Irish were "the greatest talkers since the Greeks". Since independence, Ireland has revived (复兴) its own culture of music, language, literature and singing. Different areas have different styles of old Irish songs which are sung without instruments. Other kinds of Irish music use many different instruments such as the violin, whistles, etc. 32. What does the author tell us in paragraph 1? A. how the Irish fought against the English. B. how Ireland gained independence. C. how two "Irelands" came into being. D. how English rulers tried to conquer Ireland. 33. We learn from the text that in Ireland _____. A. people are moving to the cities for lack of work in the countryside B. it is harder to make a living as a farmer than as a factory worker C. different kinds of old Irish songs are all sung with instruments D. food shortages in the 1840s led to a decrease in population 34. What’s the writer’s attitude toward the Irish people? A. negative B. positive C. indifferent D. critical 35. What can be the best title for the text? A. Ireland, past and present B. A very difficult history C. The independence of Ireland D.
