His family were very poor farmers, and there was never enough to eat. Frank decided he did not want to be a farmer. He took a short business course, and went to work as a salesman in a large city. Woolworth realized he had a natural skill for showing goods to attract people’s interest, but he soon learned something more important. One day his boss told him to sell some odds and ends (小商品) for as much as he could get. Frank put all these things on one table with a sign which said FIVE CENTS EACH. People fought and pushed to buy the things and the table was soon cleared. Soon afterwards, Woolworth opened his own store, selling goods at five and ten cents. But he had another lesson to learn before he became successful. That is, if you want to make money by selling low-price goods, you have to buy them in large quantities directly from the factories. Once, for example, Woolworth went to Germany and placed an order for knives. The order was so large that the factory had to keep running 24 hours a day for a whole year. In this way, the price of the knives was cut down by half. By 1919, Woolworth had over 1000 stores in the US and Canada, and opened his first store in London. He made many millions and his name became famous throughout the world. He always run his business according to strict rules, of which the most important was: “ THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT.” 24. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled(贴标签) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time,Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other. War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon,I heard her screaming,“Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened,I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder. The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation,I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up,she quickly crawled(爬) under her covers, sobbing. Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden,a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart. Slowly,I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn’t notice Kate had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression one of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me,“Thanks.” Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together:giving in,cleaning up and holding on. 28. B.By describing a process. C.By showing differences. D.By following time order. 31. What might be the best title for the story? A.My Friend Kate B.Learning to Be Roommates C.How to Be Organized D.Hard Work Pays Off D A new study of 8,000 young people in the journal of Health and Social Behavior shows that although love can make adults live healthily and happily,it is a bad thing for young people. Puppy love(早恋)may bring stress for young people and can lead to depression. The study shows that girls become more depressed than boys, and younger girls are the worst of all. The possible reason for the connection between love and higher risk of depression for girls is “loss of self”. According to the study, even though boys would say “lose themselves in a romantic relationship”, this “loss of self” is much more likely to lead to depression when it happens to girls. Young girls who have romantic relationships usually like hiding their feelings and opinions. They won’t tell that to their parents. Dr Marianm Kaufman, an expert on young people problems, says 15% to 20% young people will have depression during their growing. Trying romance often causes the depression. She advises kids not to jump into romance too early. During growing up, it is important for young people to build strong friendships and a strong sense of self. She also suggests the parents should encourage their kids to keep close to their friends, attend more interesting school activities and spend enough time with family. Parents should watch for signs of depression—eating or mood changes—and if they see signs from their daughters or sons, they need to give help. The good news is that the connection between romance and depression seems to become weak with age. Love will always make us feel young, but only maturity(成熟) gives us a chance to avoid its bad side effects. 32. What’s the main idea of the passage? A.Romance is a two-edged sword for adults. B. Parents should forbid their children’s love. C. Puppy love may bring young people depression. D. Romance is good for young people. 33. Which of the following is more likely to have depression? A. Young people who have a strong sense of self. B. Young boys whose parents watch for their behavior. C. Careless parents whose children are deep in love. D. Young girls who always hide their feelings and opinions. 34. What can be inferred from the passage? A. Lacking love can lead young people to grow up more quickly. B. The older a woman is, the less likely she seems to lose herself in romance. C. Parents should help their children to be aware of the signs of depression. D. Early love makes young people keep close to their friends and parents. 35. What’s the author’s attitude towards puppy love? A. Confused B. Disinterested C. Disapproving D. Scared 第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Does this situation seem familiar to you?Your English is progressing well, the grammar is now familiar, the reading comprehension is no problem, and you are speaking quite fluently. 36 First of all, remember that you are not alone. Listening is probably the most difficult job for almost all learners of English as a foreign language. The most important thing is to listen as often as possible. 37 The Internet is really a useful tool for English students. You can download The RealPlayer from RealMedia.com.The RealPlayer allows you to use the Internet like a radio station. Once you have begun to listen on a regular basis, you might still be frustrated(受阻) by limited understanding. 38 Here is some of the advice I give my students: ▲ Accept the fact that you are not going to understand everything. ▲Stay relaxed when you do not understand, and try listening to the material for more times. ▲Do not translate everything into your native language. ▲39 Don ‘t concentrate on details before you have understood the main ideas. ▲Listen to something you enjoy. I remember the problems I had in understanding spoken German when I first went to Germany. In the beginning, when I didn’t understand a word, I insisted on translating it in my mind. This method usually resulted in confusion. 40 Firstly, translating creates a barrier between the listener and the speaker. Secondly, most people repeat themselves constantly. By remaining calm, I noticed that even if I didn’t pay much attention I could usually understand what the speaker had said. A.Then, after the first six months, I discovered two extremely important facts. B.But listening is a problem for most of the beginners. C.But you can’t follow a native English speaker at all! D. However, after several weeks, I got used to the new environment in Germany. E.So, what you need to do is to find listening resources. F.What should you do? G.Listen for the general idea of the conversation. Joe Biggs was a butcher. You are the very person who gave me a hand when necessary. With the Midterm Examination around the corner, I was nervous and in low spirits, being afraid of letting my parents down because of my average academic performance. When I was at a loss and on the point of giving up, as my headteacher, you asked me to go to your office. Instead of blaming me, you comforted me and discussed with me the reasons for my failing in the exam. More unforgettably, you managed to help me with my study and always inspired me from time to time. Gradually, I learned how to adjust to myself and stayed calm in the exam. Mrs Zhang, I’m more than grateful for what you have done for me, from which I’ve got to know it is never too late to get back when there is still hope. Wish you happiness and good health. Yours Sincerely, Li Hua 查看更多
