The pollution-sensitive EPA Dress by Stephanie Sandstrom notices pollution in the air accordingly. This dress—which is actually quite pretty—looks like you pull it from the bottom of the dirty laundry pile when the air is dirty. It might protect your health by advising you to stay indoors for the day, but it won’t do you any favor if you’re meeting with clients. Eco-friendly Umbrella Traditional umbrellas come with a fixed surface. Although it is changeable, you cannot replace it easily. This eco-friendly design is more flexible. It is actually only an umbrella skeleton(骨架) without any surface, which can be folded, so you can put anything such as newspapers, plastic bags or whatever you want to serve as the protecting surface. Eco-friendly Moss (苔藓) Carpet It is said that walking on fresh grass increases your blood circulation. The Moss Carpet, created by Nguyen La Chanh, looks at getting the grass to your feet. The mat includes ball moss, island moss and forest moss. The humidity (湿度) of the bathroom ensures that it grows well. And that’s why you need to place it there and not anywhere else. 21. Why is EPA Dress designed? A. To advise people to stay at home as often as possible B. To stop people from meeting their clients if necessary. C. To make women look pretty even in the polluted air. D. To keep users informed of the polluted levels in the air. 22. Compared with traditional umbrellas, the Eco-friendly Umbrella _____ A. is changeable B. hasn’t any surface C. can be folded D. is made of newspapers 23. Where does the text probably come from? A. A science report B. A personal blog C. A health report D. An official document B What are the biggest problems that society will have to deal with in the new age? There are diseases like AIDS and cancer. There’s climate change, of course. And what about producing enough cheap food and energy for the world’s growing population? Who’s going to solve all these terrible problems? Yes, politicians and world leaders will have a big part to play. Yes, businesses will need to create the economic wealth to pay for some of these things. But who’s going to make a much greater difference to something like AIDS or climate change. It’s going to be a scientist. It is the scientist who can turn some new bit of science into a new technology to solve these problems. If you like thinking about the world around you, why not become a scientist? It doesn’t mean you have to wear a white coat and plastic glasses and spend all your time in a lab as most people often imagine! Scientists do all kinds of amazing things that are actually interesting! Military scientists develop not only new weapons but new military technologies that could help make wars out of date. Forensic(法医的) scientists work with the police to find quite small clues to catch criminals. Scientists work in schools and colleges as the teachers and professors who will train tomorrow’s scientists. Don’t think a scientist is far away! Maybe you like cooking? You could be a food technologist helping to keep fruit and vegetables fresher for longer. Perhaps sport is your thing? Do you know that most top athletes work with sports scientists in order to improve their performance? You could even be the science writer who gets to spend the life studying the latest advances and sharing them with the world. Looking for something to do for the rest of your life? My advice? Take a long and hard look at science. It is interesting and ever. 24. Many problems are mentioned in the first paragraph to ________. A. suggest they are impossible to be solved B. introduce the causes of these problems C. show the writer’s worry about the future world D. show scientists play an important part in solving them 25. What is needed to solve these problems? A. Advanced weapons B. Enough energy C. New technologies D. A growing population 26. Most people think the life of scientists is _______. A. amazing B. Boring C. colorful D. unreal 27. Which of the following statement is NOT true according to the passage? A. Owing to military technologies, there has been no wars. B. For those interested in cooking, food technologies may be a choice. C. Forensic scientists play an important part in dealing with crimes. D. Most athletes can achieve greater achievement with the help of sports scientists. C It seems hard to watch someone yawn(打哈欠)and not to yawn ourselves. Even reading about yawning can make you do it. Now, a new study has found why yawning has such a powerful force. Yawning when others yawn, the study suggests, is a sign of pity and a form of social connection. Kids don’t develop this deeply rooted behavior until around age four, the study found. Kids with autism (自闭症) are less likely to catch yawns. In the most serious cases, they never do. Yawning might help doctors to see whether the children are developing rightly. The work could also lead to a better understanding of the ways that people communicate and connect. “Emotional infection seems to be a born thing that connects us together,” said Molly Helt, a graduate student in psychology at the University of Connecticut. “Yawning may be part of that.” Inspiration for her study came when she tried to get her own autistic son to clear his ears on an airplane. She repeatedly yawned at him, hoping he would yawn back. He never did. “The fact that autistic kids don’t do it might mean they’re really missing out on that emotional connection with people around them,” she said. “The biggest thing people try to figure out after birth is how we become humans and understand that humans have minds that are different from others,” she added. “Autistic people never seem to understand that.” Like infectious(有感染力的)laughter and crying, scientists have found that yawning is a shared experience that promotes social connection. Helt said it could fight stress after a period of being nervous and spread a feeling of calm through a group. 28. According to the first two paragraphs, what does the new study suggest? A. It is easy to stop yawning when you see others yawn. B. Yawning is a form of communication. C. Children follow others in yawning just after they are born. D. Yawning has some mysterious force which is related to God. 29. According to Molly Helt, _________. A. yawning is a kind of emotional connection among humans B. humans differ from animals because they communicate with others C. emotions are infectious, but yawning is not D. yawning helps clear ears on planes 30. Which of the following is NOT true about yawning? A. It is natural to yawn back if people around you yawn. B. Some kids are too young to yawn after others. C. Kids with autism yawn easily when others yawn. D. Yawning can be used to test children’s development. 31. The author implies in the last paragraph that ________. A. it is bad manners to yawn on some social occasions B. yawning can make people feel relaxed C. the more you yawn, the happier you will be D. yawning is different from infectious laughter and crying in theory D Steven Stein likes to follow garbage trucks. His strange habit makes sense when you consider that he’s an environmental scientist who studies how to reduce litter, including things that fall off garbage trucks as they drive down the road. What is even more interesting is that one of Stein's jobs is defending an industry behind the plastic shopping bags. Americans use more than 100 billion thin film plastic bags every year. So many end up in tree branches or along highways that a growing number of cities do not allow them at checkouts(收银台) . The bags are prohibited in some 90 cities in California, including Los Angeles. Eyeing these headwinds, plastic-bag makers are hiring scientists like Stein to make the case that their products are not as bad for the planet as most people assume. Among the bag makers' argument: many cities with bans still allow shoppers to purchase paper bags, which are easily recycled but require more energy to produce and transport. And while plastic bags may be ugly to look at, they represent a small percentage of all garbage on the ground today. The industry has also taken aim at the product that has appeared as its replacement: reusable shopping bags. The stronger a reusable bag is, the longer its life and the more plastic-bag use it cancels out. However, longer-lasting reusable bags often require more energy to make. One study found that a cotton bag must be used at least 131 times to be better for the planet than plastic. Environmentalists don't dispute(质疑) these points. They hope paper bags will be banned someday too and want shoppers to use the same reusable bags for years. 32. What has Steven Stein been hired to do? A. Help increase grocery sales. B. Recycle the waste material. C. Stop things falling off trucks. D. Argue for the use of plastic bags. 33. What does the word “headwinds”in paragraph 2 refer to? A. Bans on plastic bags. B. Effects of city development. C. Headaches caused by garbage. D. Plastic bags hung in trees. 34. What is a disadvantage of reusable bags according to plastic-bag makers? A. They are quite expensive. B. Replacing them can be difficult. C. They are less strong than plastic bags. D. Producing them requires more energy. 35. What is the best title for the text? A. Plastic, Paper or Neither B. Industry, Pollution and Environment C. Recycle or Throw Away D. This word is “home.” Long ago in the 1700s, “home” was used as a verb, 61 (mean) “to be guided to a destination.” So, when you home in on something, you get 62 (close) to your target. For example, you could say, “Police are homing in on the suspects.” That is also where we get homing pigeons-pigeons that can find 63 (they) way home after being released. But today, “home” is more often used as a noun. And it has a very emotional 64 (connect) for American English speakers. You can remember the meaning of the word by the expression “home is 65 the heart is.” That expression means home is anywhere you feel love and comfort. It is a place where you belong, and often a place you consider your origin. In other 66 (word), “home” is not 67 (simple) a building where you live—that’s a house. There is a big difference 68 a home and a house. The writer, Thomas Wolfe, had 69 different idea about home. In 1940, his book “You Can’t Go Home Again” 70 (publish). What we need most are popular science books. Usually popular science books explain basic principles of nature in a simple and interesting way .They help us understand science subjects better and arouse our curiosity about scientific discoveries. In addition to reading for knowledge, we read for fun and inspiration .That is why I recommend another category of books: literary books. Classic works, written by masters, present great thoughts through fascinating stories and language. They not only offer us joy and excitement, but also encourage us to think critically . I’ll be glad if you can consider my recommendation. Yours sincerely, Li Hua查看更多
