Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?‎ According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.‎ The study also found the effect is greater, the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.‎ - 15 -‎ Scans showed that grey matter density(密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.‎ ‎“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists.‎ It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.‎ Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible(灵活的),”he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”‎ The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34.Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.‎ ‎25. The main subject talked about in this passage is ________.‎ A. science on learning a second language B. man's ability of learning a second language C. that language can help improve brain power D. language learning and maths study ‎26. The underlined word “bilingual” probably means________.‎ A. a researcher on language learning B. a second language learner C. a person who can speak two languages D. an active language learner ‎27. We may know from the scientific findings that ________.‎ A. the earlier you start to learn a second language, the higher the grey matter density is B. there is no difference between a later second language learner and one who doesn't know a second language - 15 -‎ C. the experience of learning a second language has bad effect on people's brain D. the ability of learning a second language is changing all the time ‎28. In the last two paragraphs, the author wants to tell us that________.‎ A. learning a second language is the same as studying maths B. early learning of a second language helps you a great deal in study other subjects C. Italian is the best choice for you as a second language D. you'd better choose the ages between 2 and 34 to learn a second language C ‎ ‎ What is language for? Some people seem to think it's for practicing grammar rules and learning lists of words—the longer the lists, the better. That's wrong. Language is for the exchange(交流)of ideas and information. It's meaningless knowing all about a language if you can't use it freely. ‎ Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can't speak correctly or fluently(流利地). They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldn't be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language. Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too. Bernard Shaw once wrote, "Foreigners often speak English too correctly. "But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They're English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right. People not only make history, they make languages , too. But a people can only make its own language. It can't make another people's language. So Chinese students of English should pay attention to grammar, but they shouldn't overdo(做过头)it. They should put communication at the first place. ‎ 29. Generally, when an American or an Englishman speaks English,he________.‎ ‎ A.never makes mistakes. B.often makes mistakes . ‎ ‎ C.always makes mistakes. D.cannot avoid making mistakes. ‎ 30. The underlined sentence means that__________.‎ A.foreigners speak correct English. B.foreigners speak incorrect English.‎ C.foreigners speak English according to the grammar rules.‎ - 15 -‎ D. Foreigners never make mistakes when they speak English. ‎ 29. When we speak a foreign language,we should________.‎ A.not be afraid of making mistakes. B.speak in the Chinese way.‎ C.break the rules. D.speak according to the rules.‎ ‎ 32.What is the most important when speaking a foreign language?‎ A.Grammar rules. B.Communication C.Lists of words. D.Making no mistakes.‎ ‎ D ‎  Everyone has got two personalities-the one that is shown to the world and the other that is secret and real. You don't show your secret personality when you're awake because you can control your behavior, but when you're asleep, your sleeping position shows the real you. In a normal night, of course, people frequently change their position. The important position is the one that you go to sleep in.       If you go to sleep on your back, you're a very open person. You normally trust people and you are easily influenced by fashion or new ideas. You don't like to upset people, so you never express your real feelings. You're quite shy and you aren't very confident.       If you sleep on your stomach, you are a rather secretive(不坦率的)person. You worry a lot and you're always easily upset. You're very stubborn(顽固的),but you aren't very ambitious. You usually live for today not for tomorrow. This means that you enjoy having a good time.       If you sleep curled up(卷曲),you are probably a very nervous person. You have a low opinion of yourself and so you're often defensive. You're shy and you don't normally like meeting people. You prefer to be on your own. You're easily hurt.       If you sleep on your side, you have usually got a well-balanced personality. You know your strengths and weaknesses. You're usually careful. You have a confident personality. You sometimes feel anxious, but you don't often get depressed.
