They floated on the waves and then piled up year by year, sticking out of the ocean. That’s probably how the Pelican Bar, located about a mile from the southwest coast of Jamaica, is built on. Some of its visitors have no room to be fitted inside the bar, and they just drink standing in waist-deep water. ‎ What to order: cocktail “Pelican Perfection”. ‎ ‎21.Which bar will you choose if you want to bathe in the hot spring while drinking a cocktail? ‎ A. B ‎ ‎ It may sound a very common saying, but they call dogs man’s best friends for a reason, and Otis confirmed that. ‎ ‎ The one-year- old chocolate Labrador loves playing catch and duck hunting with his “dad” Jake Atkins. And that was exactly what the two were doing with another friend at Perry Lake early Monday morning. “We were walking pretty much side-by-side when we both unknowingly sank to knee depth in the mud and we tried to wiggle(扭动) ourselves out and it ended up being waist-deep,” Atkins said. Realizing if they continued to struggle they would only continue to sink, they called 911. ‎ ‎ Otis waited with them, not knowing he would soon be tasked with helping rescue them himself. It turned out that the firefighters couldn’t easily get to them either. “If they’d walked out, they would have sunk too. So when those firefighters turned up , I said just tying the rope onto Otis,” Atkins said. And so they did. The faithful Labrador took not one, not two but three trips out onto the mud, claws sinking, carrying a heavy rope in his mouth to rescue—first their equipment , then Atkins’ friend and then Atkins himself. Otis was crying by the last trip because he was tired, but he refused to leave his loved one’s side until Atkins was safe. ‎ Otis got out of the mud and immediately found some bushes to lay down and take a short sleep. To show it’s necessary to take a trip with dogs. ‎ D. To tell how to train dogs to help people in need. ‎ ‎ C ‎ ‎ Japan is aging faster than any other nation. By the end of this decade, there will be three retirees for every child under 15 and before long, one in six people will be over 80. Its population will soon be falling by nearly a million people every year and some people predict that , some time in the next century, the last Japanese person will die. Other countries are encouraging immigration to deal with their demographic woes. But not Japan, which is using different ways to reduce pressure put on healthcare and social services. ‎ ‎ The Toto-made toilet, common in Japanese hotels, can push up to help the elderly. Now Toto is working with Daiwa House, Japan’s largest house builder, to equip toilets for retirees. These have medical sensors that measure blood sugar levels, the blood pressure and body fat of the user. The data is emailed to the local GP through a built-in internet device(装置). So make sure you eat your greens and stay regular, or the doctor will be in touch. ‎ The over-75s account for more than a quarter of the deaths in car accidents on Japanese roads. Toyota is working with Professor Kawashima, who developed brain training games for Nintendo, to create intelligent cars that monitor brain activity in the elderly. Other technologies could also work to keep elderly drivers cautious. ‎ Japan has twice as many pets as it has children. But real animals are difficult to look after as their owners’ age. Paro is a furry white baby seal robot which responds to petting by moving its tail and opening and closing its eyes. It shows emotions such as surprise , happiness and anger, and has sold well in nursing homes where it is reported to stimulate (刺激) responses among those with dementia(痴呆). ‎ Japan’s Institute of Physical and Chemical Research has developed Riba, a nursing care robot that can lift the elderly out of bed. ‎ 28. While the event, which is also Albert Einstein’s birthday, may start with some calculations, it is more than likely to conclude with a slice or two of delicious pie. The holiday is held every March 14, because “π ” is widely recognized as 3.14. ‎ ‎ The tradition of honoring “π ”began at San Francisco’s Exploratorium Museum. On March14, 1988, physicist Larry Shaw convinced his colleagues to mark the day by marching around one of the museum’s circular spaces and consuming fruit pies. The celebration was made official in 2009 when the US House of Representatives set aside March 14 as Pi Day. ‎ ‎ Today, Pi Day is observed in many creative ways. ‎ ‎ Students at the California Institute of Technology in Los Angeles host a pie-eating event, which begins at 1: 59 a. m. and features 26 pies, each of five different flavors of the popular dessert. Though that might seem random, the date (3.14), time(159), number of pies(26), and number of varieties (5) recreate the first nine digits Pi: 3.14159265! ‎ ‎ Students applying for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston eagerly wait for the day every year to find out if they have been accepted. However, instead of sending out the offers at 3:14 p.m., the institution waits till 6:28 p.m.. 6.28 is referred to as Tau, which is Pi multiplied by 2. The number is believed to be much more reliable than Pi by some experts and even has its own celebration on June 28. Since 2017, MIT has also used Pi Day as a fundraiser to support its students, departments and programs. ‎ ‎ The town of Princeton, New Jersey, where Einstein lived from 1935 until his death in 1955, celebrates the occasion with multi-day festivities that end on March 14. Visitors can participate in concerts, shows, as well as pie-eating , pi-recitation, and Einstein-lookalike contests. ‎ 32. Where was Pi Day originally celebrated? ‎ A. In San Francisco. B.
