The force was so great that it shunted (使移开) the parked car several meters forwards. I was knocked out cold. Worse still, I had no idea that a fire had started under the bonnet (引擎盖) of my car. It then set the tree on fire. Driving behind me was a young man, who I later found out was called Jared. He saw the accident occur and stopped to help me out of the burning car. He put his own life in danger when he got into the back seat to try to undo my seat belt. This wasn’t easy because I’d hit the car on my driver’s side and my seat belt was squeezed into the console (操纵台). With my seat belt undone, Jared then hit open the driver’s window to drag me out as I had still not regained consciousness (意识). He bravely did this while my car and the tree were burning. Woken by the crash, the homeowners came out to investigate. Jared told them to ring emergency services. I was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in a serious condition. I eventually woke up a day later. I owe my life to Jared and I consider him a friend due to the special bond. Jared says that although the events of that night initially shocked him, he never once hesitated to help. In addition, he doesn’t believe that he did anything special. 28. What happened to the author in the crash? A. He was knocked unconscious. B. He was knocked out of his car. C. He felt cold because of bleeding. D. He climbed on the tree to escape fire. 29. Why did Jared get into the back seat? A. To get the author out of the car. B. To help the author drive the car safely. C. To unfasten the author’s seat belt. D. To put out the burning fire in the car. 30. What is the special bond for the author ? A Jared’s noble character. B Jared’s dragging him to safety . C The motivation for Jared’s behavior . D His making friends with Jared . 31. Which is the best title for the passage? A. A narrow escape from death B. A frightening car fire C. Jared, my best friend D. A courageous crash rescue D When I graduated from the University of Iowa last year,I did something my friends did not understand. I left Iowa, where I had friends and stability,to live on a small houseboat near San Francisco. At school,I had found a job driving a school bus so people asked, “Why on earth are you leaving?” Well,at graduation I was presented with two things — a degree in psychology and a question. It was the same one that many in my generation got: “What do I do now?” It was as difficult as it was common. That’s because many people at my age were raised with the same words, repeated over and over by parents, teachers and TV,that you “can be whatever you want to be.” As a young boy, every time when I was puzzled about my future, they would say that they would be happy if I was happy. However, what I needed was concrete advice but not a vague idea, for example,“be a doctor,or be a bus driver.” My experience was by no means universal. Many Americans are taught by their parents that the only purpose in life is to attain money and power. As a goal, this seems much easier and clearer than finding “happiness” or “gentleness”. The result of this upbringing is that many of my classmates did not specialize in any particular skill, rather assuming that something would magically happen to overcome their problems. They often get a real shock when they enter the“real world”and find that their options are very limited. Many of my friends have taken jobs as waiters or cooks after graduating,or have moved back in with their parents. My life on the boat is hard at times, especially during storms. But this is my small attempt to be happy on my own. I’m not buying into my nation’s idea of limitless possibilities because I feel that stops the growth of many of today’s youth. 32. Why were the friends confused about the writer’s leaving? A. He was tired of driving. B. He suddenly quit school. C. He would lose his friends. D. He would lead a changing life. 33. What does the author think of the guidance he got from American society? A. It’s specific. B. It’s wrong. C. It’s general. D. It’s correct. 34. What directly caused a lot of Americans to have jobs lower than their expectations? A. Their achievable goals. B. The practical guidance. C. Being shocked by the real world. D. Lacking professional competence. 35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Stay where you are. B. The meaning of life is in its dedication, not its length. C. Blind faith in an industrial society. D. Mistaken belief in limitless possibilities. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 If something that you ‘re doing doesn’t challenge you, then it doesn’t change you. We all need some normal stress in our lives, after all. 36 . So challenge the following limits: 1. Figure out what you’re scared of and do it continuously. If you’re a salesman, and you’re scared of talking to people personally or over the phone, now, instead of being scared and thinking you’ll fail, spend at least five minutes a day to pick up the phone and make a call. 37 But don’t stop on the first try! Eventually, you can look at fear in the eyes and say, “Go on! I’m not scared!” 2. 38 Make sure this hobby is not linked to your career; you have to relax and relieve your stress while performing this. Some examples might be cooking, sewing, painting and so on. Apart from helping you challenge yourself, taking a class for your hobby may also give you extra income. 3. Set aside at least nine minutes a day for physical exercise. 39 A simple 9-minute run around your neighborhood can do wonders for yourself. Exercise can not only help you maintain your regular weight, but also make you feel better about yourself. 1. Travel and allow yourself to be interested in new people. Don’t just limit yourself to your fellow travelers- try to connect with the service staff. You never know what kind of people they’re going to be. Get out of your house or go online right now to book your class. 40 A. Someone may hang up on you. B. You should do it continuously. C. You don’t need to go to the gym. D. Running in the gym may be a better choice. E. Start to travel now and learn to challenge yourself. F. Take a class for a hobby you’ve been wanting to develop. G. You can never see any improvement if you stick to your comfort zone. 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分45分) 第一节(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Justin knew there was only one way out of his neighborhood — basketball.
