His group has invented a new way for deaf-blind people to “watch” TV. The idea for the technology grew out of previous work by his group. The team had already worked on making audiovisual(视听的) materials accessible to people with either vision or hearing disabilities. But the group wanted to help people with both challenges. So they asked some deaf-blind people what would ‎ help.‎ ‎ In addition to relying on their sense of touch to communicate, deaf-blind people can also get and send information with a Braille line. The Braille system uses patterns of raised dots to stand for letters and numbers. A Braille line is an electronic machine with a changeable Braille display. Dots rise up or drop down based on the information sent to the machine.‎ ‎ Now the new system changes TV signals to data a Braille line can use. “The key to the system is the possibility of using subtitles(字幕) to collect TV information, ” Garcia Crespo explains. “Subtitles travel with the image(影像) and the audio in electromagnetic waves we don’t see. But an electronic system can keep those waves. ”‎ ‎ First, a computer program, or app, pulls out the subtitles and visual descriptions from the broadcast signal. The system then combines the information and changes both into data for Braille.‎ ‎ Now another app gets to work, which sends the data out to people’s Braille lines on demand. “This is done in real time, in less than a second, ” Garcia Crespo says. This lets a deaf-blind person “watch” TV as it’s broadcast. The system will work with various Braille lines, as long as there’s a bluetooth connection available. Now, the system is only used in Europe, and it should soon be available in the US.‎ ‎32. What inspired Garcia Crespo’s group to work on the new technology?‎ ‎ A. Deaf-blind people’s poor life.‎ ‎ B. Their pity on the disabled people.‎ ‎ C. The challenges they face in work.‎ ‎ D. Their group’s previous research.‎ ‎33. Why can the electronic system collect TV information?‎ ‎ A. It can combine all kinds of broadcast signals.‎ ‎ B. It can keep the waves with subtitles traveling.‎ ‎ C. It can work together with a variety of Braille lines.‎ ‎ D. It can pull out the subtitles and visual descriptions.‎ ‎34. What does the author think of the future of the new technology?‎ ‎ A. Challenging. B. Bright. C. Rewarding. D. Hopeless.‎ ‎35. What should be a suitable title for the text?‎ A. New Technology Is Improving Deaf-blind People’s Life ‎ B. A New Braille Line Is Applied to Disabled People’s Life ‎ C. A Spanish Group Makes TV Accessible to Blind People ‎ D. New Technology Helps Deaf-blind People “Watch” TV 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Thanks to world-famous Colombian writer Garcia Marquez, many people think of Latin America as a land of magic. (8) What is that on TV?‎ W: Firemen are fighting forest fires in Los Angeles right now. (9)‎ M: That looks like something out of a movie.‎ W: Strange, isn't it? Fires on one side of the country, and snowstorms here in New York,‎ M: What about world news? Anything interesting?‎ W: World leaders are meeting in Paris to discuss climate change.‎ M: That seems appropriate, considering what is happening in the world. When will the sports come on? (10)‎ W: Near the end of the hour, just before the weather report. You should listen to the local news first. (10) Listen! It is about the snowstorm...‎ Text 8‎ W: I'm stuck! Could you help get my car out of the snow, Mr. Brady? (11) I'm already late for school.‎ M: It's my pleasure, Anne. I was clearing the snow on the sidewalk, anyway.‎ W: So, when do your grandchildren get here? (12)‎ M: My daughter is bringing them down this weekend. (12) That means I only have three days to hang these Christmas lights.‎ W: I bet her kids will love this weather.‎ M: So, when do you get off for the Christmas break?‎ W: Monday. I just have a couple of tests at the end of the week, and I'm done.‎ M: Good for you. Do you have any plans for the holiday? (13) You went to a farm with your friends last year, didn't you?‎ W: Yes. This year, we were planning on going to a ski mountain, but the hotels were all booked. So, we will spend the holiday in the city instead. My aunt is lending me her apartment. (13)‎ M: That is nice of her. OK, it looks like you're ready to go. You step on the gas, and I'll give you a push.‎ ‎ W: It worked! Bye, Mr. Brady!‎ Text 9‎ ‎ W: Jeffrey! I'm glad I ran into you. I need some advice. (14)‎ ‎ M: No problem, Lili. I was just on my way to the science lab. What can I do for you? (14)‎ W: My neighbor invited me over for dinner tonight. Is there anything I should know about Western dining traditions? (15)‎ ‎ M: We are not too strict about these things, (15) so you needn't worry too much.‎ W: Are you sure? I've heard there are many roles about when to come, what to bring, and how to act.‎ ‎ M: OK, so what time did they say you'd be eating dinner?‎ ‎ W: She said to come "around five". Does that mean I should come half an hour early, or later? (16)‎ M: It means exactly what she said. (16)‎ W: OK. Do I have to bring gifts? I remember she likes collecting CDs.‎ M: If it was a larger dinner with many people, you could ask to make something. In this case, a bottle of wine is good enough. (17)‎ W: I remember my tutor saying that iii should eat whatever they serve me.‎ M: That's not really true. You may eat whatever you want. Just relax. You'll be fine.‎ W: OK, thanks. I'll let you know how it goes.‎ Text 10 ‎ ‎ Kate McClure's car ran out of gas one night on her way into Philadelphia.
