It is a great event with more than 700 shows. ⑲This festival first started in 1970. It was set up by a farmer. At that time, only about 1,500 people attended it. ⑳But today, more than 150,000 people appear for a weekend of live music and dance. If you want to attend it, you need to buy the ticket early. The tickets for this year have been sold out. I have to say that I have never been to the festivals, but I would love to go. Now I will watch all the activities on TV at home. It's reported that it will rain then. Word of his questionable plan was already spreading through town as Mr. David swam out to the platform. He was just a tiny, stick figure when he got there but even from such a distance the high board seemed almost to touch the clouds.Once at the top,he paced the enormously long board, then took some deep breaths and finally stood at edge.He was going to do it. Several hundred people had gathered at the shore to watch.Mr. David stood for quite a long time, then he raised his arms, took one massive bounce and launched himself into a perfect dive.It was beautiful. He fell with perfect style for what seemed minutes. The crowd fell silent. The only sound to be heard was the faint whistle of his body tearing through the air toward the water far,far below. But about three quarters of the way down he seemed to have second thoughts and began suddenly to panic, waving his arms and legs like someone having a bad dream. When he was perhaps thirty feet above the water,he gave up on waving and spread his arms and legs wide, apparently hoping that it would somehow slow his fall. It didn't. He hit the water at over six hundred miles an hour. The impact was so loud that it made birds fly out of their trees three miles away.I don't think he entered the water at all.He just bounced off it,about fifteen feet back into the air. After that,he lay still on the surface, spinning like an autumn leaf. He was brought to shore by two passing fishermen in a rowboat and placed on an old blanket where he spent the rest of the afternoon.Occasionally he accepted small sips of water, but otherwise was too shocked to speak. From head to toe,he was covered with deep red bruises. It was the best day of my life. 24.How did the writer find Mr. David's plan to jump from the diving board? A.Heroic. B.Disappointing. C.Crazy. D.Confusing. C。 21 25.In Paragraph 3,Mr. David is described as “a tiny, stick figure” because he was________. D.The impact was so loud that it made birds fly out of trees up to three miles away. B。 C I used to believe courtesy was a thing of the past. Very seldom have I encountered a courteous human being in this modern era. Recently, I had to change my thinking, when I came face to face with just such a human being in a coffee place, with my two daughters. The place was crowded as usual and we had to climb steep(陡的) stairs in order to find an empty table. After enjoying coffee and snacks, we went down the narrow stairs, where there was hardly any space for another person to either climb up or come down. Just as I was in the middle of the stairs, a man entered the main entrance of the restaurant which was right in front of the staircase(楼梯). I was sure I would be pushed roughly by this man going up. I kept coming down as fast as I could. My 21 daughters were already down, looking up at me worriedly, hoping I would reach them before the stranger started walking up the stairs, knowing I was a nervous sort. Nearly reaching them, I noticed the man still standing near the door. I reached my daughters and passed the stranger at the entrance door which he kept holding open. I looked back, thinking he was still at the door, deciding whether to go in or find another less crowded place. I saw him going up the stairs, two at a time. I told my daughters about it and all three of us felt bad that we did not even thank the courteous gentleman who was actually holding the door open for us ladies to pass through before going up. Such wellmannered people are hard to find these days when pushing is very common in our advanced but aggressive society. We applauded for his chivalry(彬彬有礼). 28.What is the meaning of the underlined word “courtesy” in Paragraph 1? A.A brave action. B.He would wait for her. C.He would pass her rudely. D.He was a man with good manners. 根据第三段中的“I was sure I would be pushed roughly by this man going up.” 30.Why did the author's daughters worry about her? A.She was easy to be nervous. B.She took up too much space. C.She was too old to walk fast. D.She focused too much on the man. 根据第三段中的“knowing I was a nervous sort”可知,作者是一个很容易紧张的人,故选A项。 31.What can we learn about the man from Paragraph 4? 21 A.He might be a waiter of the café. B.He might have an urgent business to do. C.He loved a daughter of the author. That's what researchers found when they played recordings of people for elephants in Kenya. Scientists say this is an advanced thinking skill that other animals haven't shown. It let elephants figure out who is a threat and who isn't. The result shows that the clever animals are also studying people, said study author Karen McComb. “Basically, they have developed this very rich knowledge of the humans that they share their habitat with,”said McComb,a professor at the University of Sussex in England. “Memory is key. They must build up that knowledge somehow.” The study was released on Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. It's close to but not quite like the Dr. Seuss book, where the elephant Horton hears something that others can't hear. McComb and colleagues went to Amboseli National Park in Kenya, where hundreds of wild elephants live among humans, sometimes coming in conflict over scarce water. The scientists used voice recordings of Maasai men,who on occasion kill elephants, and Kamba men,who are less of a threat to the elephants. As a result, the elephants reacted more defensively—retreating and gathering in a bunch—to the Maasai language recording because it was associated with the more threatening human tribe, said study coauthor Graeme Shannon. They repeated the experiment with recordings of Maasai men and women. Since women almost never spear elephants, the animals reacted less defensively to the women's voices. The same thing happened when they substituted young boys' voices. “Making this kind of fine distinctions in human voice patterns is quite remarkable,”said Emory University animal cognition expert Frans de Waal, who was not part of the study. 32.Who were the people taking part in the study? A.Frans de Waal and Karen McComb. B.Dr.Seuss and Graeme Shannon. C.Graeme Shannon and Frans de Waal. D.Karen McComb and Graeme Shannon. 33.What can wild elephants benefit from their special ability? A.Identifying and avoiding possible danger. B.Growing much faster than any other animals. C.Having a better understanding of humans. D.Developing their language skills. 根据文章第一段中的“Scientists say this is an advanced thinking skill that other animals haven't shown. It let elephants figure out who is a threat and who isn't.” 34.Which can replace the underlined word “substituted” in the last paragraph? A.Distinguished. B.Repeated. C.Used. D.Compared. 画线词所在句中的“The same thing happened”指的是前一句中的“the animals reacted less defensively to the women's voices”,画线词所在句讲的是野象对年轻男孩的声音做出的反应,说明当时研究者在对野象播放年轻男孩的声音,选C项。 35.What does the passage mainly talk about? A.Wild elephants can distinguish human languages. B.The conflict between humans and wild elephants is growing. C.Wild elephants use language skills to make discrimination. D.Wild elephants can build up good memory and learn tricks. 根据文章第一句“Wild elephants can tell whether a voice comes from a man,a woman or a boy”和全文内容可知,野象能够通过人的声音区分不同人类群体的性别和年龄,故选A项(野象能够区分人类的语言)。 Health is the most important thing in the world. No lectures this morning so I think I'd email you and let you know what things are going. I'm glad to say that anything has worked out fine in the dorm. I remember asking for a room as far away from the lifts as possible and they find me a comfortable one on second floor. There are two girls from my course here and I plan to make friend with them so that we can help each other on the course work. Everyone else seems very nice and warmly here. Well, I had better to stop now. I'm going to attend mine first lesson this afternoon, for I've got some preparation to make. Keep in touch. Best wishes! Yours, Li Ming One possible version: Dear_Tom, I'm glad that we're both interested in fantasy novels, so we can now talk a lot about them. I've had an interest in fantasy novels since I was a child. I love them, especially those that are wellwritten. There's nothing better than dropping into the pages of a wellwritten fantasy novel and finding a world of wonders to explore. I think the plots of good fantasy novels are very odd and entertaining. I usually never know what will happen next. These unexpected plots always excite me. They usually leave a lot to the imagination, which I think will help me develop the ability to create novels of my own. Which novels have you been reading recently? Please recommend some to me in your next letter. Best_wishes!
