B German artist HA Schult is an unusual artist who uses trash to make sculptures. “We are living in the time of garbage,” says Schult. “I created a thousand sculptures of garbage. They are a mirror of ourselves.” Here, Schult was talking about his 1,000 trash sculptures in the form of humans. He first exhibited them in 1996 in the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. “They are social sculptures,” he explains. “They are not only sculptures for the eyes. They are sculptures to spread the idea that we live in a time of garbage.” So far, Schult’s social sculptures have been on show in Paris, in Moscow’s Red Square, on the Great Wall of China, and in the desert next to the Giza Pyramids near Cairo. HA Schult’s work is unforgettable. Although his work has had a big influence on the art world, Schult remains modest about his creations: “Artists have to learn every time. We are not important. All that counts is the time in which we are living.” Trash art has been around for years. But it seems that only the popular artists are regarded as true artists when working with trash. Why can’t common people be considered artists when they use the same things and change them into some form of personal art? Maybe it’s because we all have our own preset ideas of what art is and isn’t, or who artists are or should be. You can be an artist like Schult if you try. Look at used metal cans. What might be done with them? Imagine them in any number of new uses, or imagine them simply as an art form. What about boxes or clothing? Boxes can usually serve as new storage containers and houses for pets. And clothing? Imagine taking old clothes and turning them into hats or hanging organizers. 25. What do we know about Schult’s sculptures? A. They reflected environmental issues. B. They served as garbage containers. C. They were first shown in Paris, France. D. They were to raise economic awareness. 26. HA Schult’s artistic works also get the message across that an artist must__________. A. take diverse artistic forms B. be as modest as possible C. make garbage recyclable D. be socially responsible 27. According to the last 2 Paragraphs, the author probably agrees that __________. A. it takes talent to be a trash artist B. average people can also make trash artists C. trash art can't be seen as a real art form D. preset ideas are important to artists C What are the biggest problems that society will have to deal with in the new age? There are diseases like AIDS and cancer. There’s climate change, of course. And what about producing enough cheap food and energy for the world’s growing population? Who’s going to solve all these terrible problems? Yes, politicians and world leaders will have a big part to play. Yes, businesses will need to create the economic wealth to pay for some of these things. But who’s going to make a much greater difference to something like AIDS or climate change? It’s going to be a scientist. It is the scientist who can turn some new bit of science into a new technology to solve these problems. If you like thinking about the world around you, why not become a scientist? It doesn’t mean you have to wear a white coat and plastic glasses and spend all your time in a lab as most people often imagine! Scientists do all kinds of amazing things that are actually interesting! Military scientists develop not only new weapons but new military technologies that could help make wars out of date. Forensic(法医的) scientists work with the police to find quite small clues to catch criminals. Scientists work in schools and colleges as the teachers and professors who will train tomorrow’s scientists. Don’t think a scientist is far away! Maybe you like cooking? You could be a food technologist helping to keep fruit and vegetables fresher for longer. Perhaps sport is your thing? Do you know that most top athletes work with sports scientists in order to improve their performance? You could even be the science writer who gets to spend the life studying the latest advances and sharing them with the world. Looking for something to do for the rest of your life? My advice? Take a long and hard look at science. It is interesting and ever. 28. Many problems are mentioned in the first paragraph to ________. A. show the writer’s worry about the future world B. introduce the causes of these problems C. show scientists play an important part in solving them D. suggest they are impossible to be solved 29. Most people think the life of scientists is ____. A. boring B. unreal C. colorful D. amazing 30. Which of the following statement is NOT true according to the passage? A. Military technologies could help prevent wars in the future. B. Politicians and world leaders can solve all the social problems. C. Forensic scientists play an important part in dealing with crimes. D. For those interested in cooking, food technologies may be a choice. 31. The passage is intended for people who ____. A. hope for the world peace B. have no interest in science C. have little knowledge of science D. haven’t decided on their career D Petrol and diesel cars may still dominate our roads, but their days are numbered. A recent university study found that current electric cars could be used for 87 percent of daily car journeys in the US. That figure could rise to 98 percent by 2020. One hurdle to the widespread adoption of electric cars has been “range anxiety” --- drivers’ concerns about running out of juice on a journey. While petrol stations are conveniently located across national road systems, the necessary network of electric charging stations is still being developed. That said, charging points are becoming increasingly common throughout the USA. Attitudes towards electric vehicles have changed quite considerably over the last few years. Not that long ago, electric cars were met with distrust, and their large price tags (标签) drove customers away. Thanks to improvements in battery capacity, recharging times, performance and price, the current generation of electric cars is starting to persuade critics. Plug-in cars will soon give international combustion (燃烧)engine models a run for their money. As well as advancements on the road, electric vehicles are taking to the seas and skies. Electric boats are among the oldest methods of electric travel, having enjoyed several decades of popularity from the late 19th to the early 20th century before petrol-powered outboard motors took over. Now, the global drive for renewable energy sources is bringing electric boats back. Steps towards electric air travel are also being made, with Airbus and NASA among the organizations developing and testing battery powered planes. The experiments could soon make commercial electric flight a reality. Electric vehicles do not produce any emissions(排放). Were the US to act on the study’s findings and replace 87 percent of its cars with electric vehicles, it would reduce the national demand for petrol by 61 percent. However, because of the production processes and the generation of electricity required to charge these vehicles, they can not claim to be completely emission-free. That said, as many countries continue to increase their use of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles will become even cleaner. 32. Which is the best title for the passage? A. My Dream Car B. History of Electric Cars C. Driving into the Future D. Problems with Petrol Cars 33. As used in Paragraph 2, the underlined word “hurdle” means ______. A. aim B. step C. consequence D. barrier 34. In the past, why did many people refuse to buy the electric cars? A. They were very poorly made. B. They were not good value. C. They were not widely promoted. D. They couldn’t travel at a high speed. 35. What is the function of Paragraph 4? A. To describe different ways electric vehicles can be used. B. To explain why the world needs more electric cars. C. To show why more people have interests in electric cars. D. To introduce the history of electric travel. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Tips for Staying Sharp It’s not abnormal to feel out of it from time to time or perhaps you’re feeling a bit sluggish(迟钝的)when it comes to remembering things.
