According to classroom teachers, elementary and middle school students who stay up late exhibit more learning and attention problems. This has been shown by Brown Medical School and Bradley Hospital research. In the study, teachers were not told the amount of sleep students received when completing weekly performance reports, yet they rated the students who had received eight hours or less as having the most trouble recalling all the material, learning new lessons and completing high – quality work. Teachers also reported that these students had more difficulty paying attention. The experiment is the first to ask teachers to report on the effects of sleep deficiency in children. Just staying up late can cause increased academic difficulty and attention problems for otherwise healthy, well –functioning kids, said Garharn Forlone, the study ’ s lead author. So the results provide professionals and parents with a clear message: when a child is having learning and attention problems, the issue of sleep has to be taken into consideration. “ If we don ’ t ask about sleep, and try to improve sleep patterns in kids ’ struggling academically, then we aren ’ t doing our job ” , Forlone said. For parents, he said, the message is simple, “ getting kids to bed on time is as important as getting them to school on time. ” 56. What were teachers told to do in the experiment? A. Monitor students ’ sleep patterns. B. Help students concentrate in class. C. Record students ’ weekly performance. D. Ask students to complete a sleep report 57. According to the experiment, what problem can insufficient sleep cause in students? A. Declining health. B. Lack of attention. C. Loss of motivation. D. Improper behavior. 58. What message did the researcher intend to convey to parents? A. They should make sure their children are always punctual for school. B. They should ensure their children grow up in a healthy environment. C. They should help their children accomplish high – quality work. D. They should see to it that their children have adequate sleep. 56—58 CBD B Insomnia is the inability to fall asleep or sleep restfully. It is a problem to nearly everyone at some time. A person may be awake for an hour in the middle of the night and then, next morning, feel that he hardly sleep all night normally, worry about not getting enough sleep is the worst aspect of most insomnia. If insomnia is recurrent, however, it is important to find its causes and try to correct them, with the help of a doctor if necessary. Any of a large number of simple factors may take it difficult for someone to fall asleep or remain asleep. His matters may be too soft or too hard. He should relax for an hour or two before bedtime, perhaps by reading a book; watching TV , or taking a warm bath. If he wakes during the night he should try turning on the light and reading for a while. Taking warm milk and a biscuit or two may be helpful. It is very necessary to build sustainability ( 可持续性 ) criteria into the supply chain of any green fuel project in order to ensure that there is no contrary effect on the surrounding environment and social structures. The report produced by the investors expresses concern that many companies may not be fully aware of the possible traps in the biofuel section. Production of corn and soya beans has increased greatly in the last years as an eco-friendly alternative to fossil fuels but environmental and human rights campaigners are worried that this will lead to destruction of rain forests. Food prices could also go up as there is increased competition for crops as both foodstuffs and sources of fuel. Last week, the UN warned that biofuels could have dangerous side effects and said that steps need to be taken to make sure that land changed over to grow biofuels does not damage the environment or cause civil unrest. There is already great concern about palm oil, which is used in many foods in addition to being an important biofuel, as rain forests are being cleared in some countries and people driven from their homes to create palm oil plantations. An analyst and author of the investors' report says that biofuels are not a cure for climate change but they can play their part as long as governments and companies manage the social and environmental impacts completely. There should also be greater measure taken to increase efficiency and to reduce demand. 63. Which of the following may be the best title of the passage? A. Chorus of Concern and Future Profits B. The author of the report says that biofuels _________. A. have no role to play in fighting global warming B. can be effective in fighting global warming on their own C. would not be dangerous if proper measures are taken D. should be part of a group of measures to fight global warming 63—66 BACD D The round-the-clock ( 24 小时不断的) availability that cell phone have brought to people ’ s lives may be taking a toll on family life ,a new study suggests. The study, which followed more than 1 ,300 adults over 2 years, found that those who consistently used a mobile phone throughout the study period were more likely to report negative “ spillover ’’ between work and home life —and,in turn, less satisfaction with their family life. Spillover essentially (本质上) means that the line between work and home begins to become unclear. Work life may invade home life when a. parent is taking job —related calls at home, for instance--or family issues may start to take up work time. For example,a child may call mom at work ,telling her "microwave exploded ” explained Noelle Chesley ,an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin — Milwaukee and the author of the study. The problem with cell phones seems to be that they are allowing for ever more spillover between work and home. This may be especially true for working women ,the study found. Among men ,consistent use of mobile phones seemed to allow more work issues to creep (潜入) into family time. But for women ,the spillover tended to go in both directions being “ connected ” meant that work cut into home time, and family issues came:into work life. Cell phones seem to be opening more lines for stressful exchanges among family members. But there may be ways to control the spillover ,according to Chesley. Employers, she said ,could look at their policies on contacting employees after hours to make sure their expectations are “ reasonable ” . For their part, employees could decide that cell phones go off during family time, Chesley said. 67. What does the underlined phrase “ taking a toll on ’’ probably mean in Paragraph 1? A. Explaining. B. Protecting. C. Extending D. Damaging. 68. What is the purpose of offering the example “ microwave exploded ” in Paragraph 2? A. To show the microwave is of poor quality. B. To indicate how dependent the child is. C. To indicate family issues affect work hours. D. To show work time creeps into family life 69. As a result of negative “ spillover ”,people will feel _____. A. 1ess satisfied with their family life. B. 1ess satisfied with their work. C. angry with their troublesome children D. unwilling to get married at an early age. 70. According to Chesley ,what is the best solution to the problem caused by cellphones? A. Refuse to use cell phones. B. Separate work hours from family time. C. Ignore coming calls during family time. D. Encourage women to stay at home. 71. We can learn from the passage that A. spillover makes the line between work and home unclear B. cell phones seem to be convenient to families C. cell phones affect men as much as women D. we can do nothing to solve the problem 67—71 DCABA E The competition among producers of personal computers is basically a race to get the best, newest products to the marketplace. Marketers in this environment frequently have to make a judgment as to their competitors ’ role when making marketing decisions. If major competitors are changing their products, then a marketer may want to follow suit to remain competitive. Apple Computer, Inc. has introduced two new, faster personal computers, the Mackintosh II and Mackintosh SE, expecting the introduction of a new PC by IBM, one of Apple ’s major competitors. Apple ’s new computers are much faster and more powerful than its earlier models. The improved Mackintosh is able to run programs that were impossible to run on an Apple PC, including IBM-compatible programs. This compatibility quality shows computer producers ’ new attitude of giving customers the qualities they want. Making Apple computers capable of running IBM software is Apple ’ s effort at making the Mackintosh compatible with IBM computers and thus more popular in the office, where Apple hopes to increase sales. Users of the new Apple can also add accessories to make their machines specialize in specific uses, such as engineering and writing. The new computers stand for a big improvement over past models, but they also cost much more. Company officials do not think the higher price will slow down buyers who want to step up to a more powerful computer. Apple wants to stay in the high-price end of the personal computer market to provide money for the research for even faster, more sophisticated computers. Even though Apple and IBM are major competitors, both companies realize that their competitor ’s computers have certain qualities that their own models do not. The Apple line has always been popular for its sophisticated color graphics, but the IMB machines have always been favored in offices. In the future, there will probably be more compatibility between the two companies’products, which no doubt will require that both Apple and IBM change marketing plans. 72. According to the passage, Apple Computer, Inc. has introduced the Mackintosh II and the Mackintosh SE because________. A. IBM is also putting new computer models onto the market B. it wants to make its machines specialize in specific uses C. it wants to stay much ahead of IBM in the competitive computer marker D. it expects its major competitor IBM to follow its example 73. Apple hopes to increase Mackintosh sales chiefly by________. A. making its new models capable of running IBM software B. improving the color graphics of its new models C. copying the marketing plans of IBM D. giving the customers more choices 74. Apple sells its new computer models at a high price because________. A. they have new qualities and functions B. they are more sophisticated than other models C. they have new accessories D. it wants to get more money for future research 75. It can be inferred from the passage that both Apple and IBM try to gain a competitive advantage by_____. A. copying each other ’ s technology B. improving qualities and making their products different C. making their computers more expensive D. making their computers run much faster 72--75 AADB 第二节:短文改错(共 10 小题;每小题 1.5 分,满分 15 分) Dear Peter, Our school is planning to hold the American Film 76. _________ Festival next month.
