At the right depth, these blood-filled veins reflect less red light than the surrounding skin, making them look relatively blue.‎ Which works harder, your heart or your brain? ‎ That depends on whether you are busy thinking or exercising. Your heart works up to three times harder during exercise, and shifts enough blood over a lifetime to fill a supertanker. But in the long run, your brain probably tips it, because even when you’re sitting still your brain is using twice as much energy as your heart, and it takes four to five times as much blood to feed it.‎ Do old people shrink as they age? ‎ Yes and do. Many people do get shorter as they age. But when they do, it isn't because they're shrinking all over. They simply lose height as their spine(脊柱) becomes shorter and more curved due to disuse and the effect of gravity. Many (but not all) men and women do lose height as they get older. Men lose an average of 3-4 cm in height as they age, while women may lose 5 cm or more. If you live to be 200 years old, would you keep shrinking till you were, like 60 cm tall, like a little boy again? No, because old people don't really shrink! It is not that they are growing backwards---their legs, arms and backbones getting shorter. When they do get shorter, it's because the spine has shortened a little. Or, more often, become more bent and curved. ‎ Why does spinning(旋转) make you dizzy?‎ ‎ Because your brain gets confused between what you're seeing and what you're feeling. The brain senses that you’re spinning using special gravity-and-motion-sensing organs in your inner ear, which work together with your eyes to keep your vision balance stable. But when you suddenly stop spinning the system goes out of control, and your brain thinks you're moving while you're not!‎ Where do feelings and emotions come from? ‎ Mostly from an ancient part of the brain called the limbic system. All mammals have this brain area — from mice to dogs, cats, and humans. So all mammals feel basic emotions like fear, pain and pleasure. But since human feelings also involve other newer bits of the brain, we feel more complex emotions than any other animal on the planet. If exercise wears you out, how can it be good for you? ‎ As far as your body is concerned, it’s "use it, or lost it”! It's not that exercise makes you healthy; it's more that a lack of exercise leaves your body weak and easily affected by disease.‎ ‎21. What is the colour of blood in a vein near the surface of the skin?‎ A. Blue.   B. Dark reddish purple. C. Red.   D. Light yellow.‎ ‎22. Why do some old people look a little shrunken as they age?‎ ‎ A. Because their spine is in active use. B. Because they are more easily affected by gravity.‎ ‎ C. Because they keep growing backwards. D. Because their spine becomes more bent.‎ ‎23. Which of the following statements about our brain is true?‎ ‎ A. When our brain senses the spinning, we will fell dizzy. ‎ B. In the long run, our brain probably works harder than our heart.‎ ‎ C. The brains of the other mammals are as complex as those of humans.‎ ‎ D. Our feelings and emotions come from the most developed area in our brain.‎ ‎24. What is the main purpose of the selection?‎ ‎ A. To provide information about our body. B. To challenge new findings in medical research.‎ ‎ C.To give advice on how to stay healthy. D.To report the latest medical discoveries.‎ B I am a strong believer that if a child is raised with approval, he learns to love himself and will be successful in his own way. Several weeks ago, I was doing homework with my son in the third grade and he kept standing up from his chair to go over the math lines. I kept asking him to sit down, telling him that he should concentrate better. He sat but seconds later, as if he didn’t even notice he was doing it, he got up again. I was getting annoyed, but then it hit me. I started noticing his answers were much quicker and more accurate when he stood up. Could he be more absorbed while standing up?‎ This made me start questioning myself and what I had been raised to believe. I was raised to believe that a quiet, calm child was a sure way to lead to success. This child would have the willpower to study hard, get good grades and become someone important in life. ‎ Now those same people perhaps come to realize that their kids are born with their own sets of DNA and personality qualities, and all you can do is loving and accepting them. As parents, throughout their growing years and beyond that, we need to be our kids’ best cheerleaders, guiding them and helping them find their ways.‎ I have stopped asking my son to sit down and concentrate. Obviously, he is concentrating just in his own way and not mine. We need to learn to accept our kids’ ways of doing things. Some way may have worked for me but doesn’t mean we need to carry it through generations. There is nothing sweeter than being personal and unique. It makes us free and happy and that’s just the way I want my kids to live their own lives.‎ 25. Time and again the author got his son seated in order to make him . ‎ A. work fast B. keep attentive C. stay relaxed D.go polite ‎ ‎26. The underlined “it” in the first paragraph probably refers to . ‎ A. his disappointment with his active child B. his failure in keeping his son under control ‎ C. his own experience as a school boy D. his son’s doing better while standing up ‎27. By this passage, the author attempts to tell other parents to . ‎ A. respect and trust their kids’ ways of behaviors ‎ B. correct their kids’ manners from the early ages ‎ C. not worry about kids’ behaviors ‎ D. encourage kids to learn by themselves ‎28. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?‎ A. The study of kids’ behavior B. Kids’ success in their own styles ‎ C. Adult influence on teen growth D. A new attitude towards kids C According to sociologists, every modern industrial society has some form of social stratification (阶层). Class, power and status are important in deciding people’s rank in society. Class means a person’s economic position in society. A commonly used classification is lower class, middle class and upper class. While sociologists disagree on how these terms should be exactly defined, they do describe societies like the United States quite well. One study shows that 53% of Americans belong to the lower class, 46% the middle class, and 1% the upper class. Interestingly, a surgeon earning $500,000 a year and a bus driver earning $50,000 a year both regard themselves as the middle class! Power refers to the amount of control a person has over other people. Obviously, people in positions of great power (such as governors) exercise (行使) big power, but people who take orders from others have less power. Power and class do not always go hand in hand, however. For example, the governor of a state has great power, but he or she may not belong to a corresponding economic class. Generally, however, there is a relationship between power and class. To our knowledge, there aren’t too many people who aren’t millionaires in the U.S. Senate! Status is the honor or respect attached to a person’s position in society. It can also be affected by power and class, but not necessarily so. For example, a university professor may have ‎ a high status but not belong to a high social class or have a lot of power over others. 29. What can we learn about “the middle class” from Paragraph 2? A. People generally consider bus drivers as the middle class. B. People earning $50,000 a year belong to the middle class. C. Nearly half Americans belong to the middle class. ‎ D. Sociologists have a clear definition of the middle class. 30. According to the text, we know that _____. A. people with high status have a lot of control over others B. status refers to a person’s economic position in society C. power and class do not always correspond with each other D. class is less important in deciding a person’s social rank 31. Which of the following shows the structure of the whole text? ‎ D The search for beauty spans centuries and continents. Paintings of Egyptians dating back over 4,000 years show both men and women painting their nails and wearing makeup. In 18th-century France, wealthy noblemen wore large wigs of long, white hair to make themselves attractive. Today, people continue to devote a lot of time and money to their appearance.‎ There is at least one good reason for the desire to be attractive: beauty is power. Studies suggest that good-looking people make more money, get called on more often in class, and are regarded as friendlier.‎ But what exactly is beauty? It’s difficult to describe it clearly, and yet we know it when we see it. And our awareness of it may start at a very early age. In one set of studies, six-month-old babies were shown a series of photographs. The faces on the pictures had been rated for attractiveness by a group of college students. In the studies, the babies spent more time looking at the attractive faces than the unattractive ones.‎ The idea that even babies can judge appearance makes perfect sense to many researchers. ‎ In studies by psychologists, men consistently showed a preference for women with larger eyes, fuller lips, and a smaller nose and chin while women prefer men with large shoulders and a narrow waist, according to scientists, the mind unconsciously tells men and women that these traits ---the full lips, clear skin, strong shoulders---equal health and genetic well-being. ‎ Not everyone thinks the same way, however. “Our aesthetic(审美观) can be changed by all sorts of expectations---mostly cultural,” says C.Loring Brace, an anthropologist at the University of Michigan. What is considered attractive in one culture might not be in another. Look at most Western fashion magazines: the women on the pages are thin. But is this “perfect” body type for women worldwide? Scientists answer is no; what is considered beautiful is subjective and varies around the world. They found native peoples in southeast Peru preferred shapes regarded overweight in Western cultures.‎ For better or worse, beauty plays a role in our lives. But it is extremely difficult to describe exactly what makes one person attractive to another. Although there do seem to be certain physical traits considered universally appealing, it is also true that beauty does not always keep to a single, uniform standard. Beauty really is, as the saying goes, in the eye of the beholder.‎ ‎32.People’s ideas about beauty . ‎ A. have little influence on a person’s success B. can be easily described C. have existed since ancient times D. are based upon strict criteria ‎33. In Paragraph 3, the babies in the study . ‎ A. were rated for their appearance B. were entered in a beauty contest C. were shown photos of a group of college students D. were able to tell attractive faces from unattractive ones ‎34. The underlined word “traits” in Paragraph 4 probably means . ‎ A. measurements B. qualities C. judgments D. standards ‎35. We can learn from the passage that . ‎ A. the ideas of beauty vary as people grow up B. the search for beauty is rooted in lack of confidence C. the standards for beauty are based on scientific researches D. the understanding of beauty depends on cultural backgrounds 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ How to Cut Back on Playing Video Games ‎ As you get older and shoulder more responsibilities in your life, your gaming time might need to adjust. Here’s what worked well for me.‎ Start Tracking Your Gaming Time ‎ One of the reasons why video games eat up so much time is that they’re so engaging. I can’t count how many times I’ve sat down to play games for “a couple of minutes” and then looked up to see hours have gone by.‎ ‎ Tracking your gaming time can help, says psychologist John M. Grohol. Prepare a spreadsheet or a piece of paper, and write down when you start playing a game and when you stop. 31 I found it helpful.‎ Start Choosing Games Wisely ‎ 32 . MMOs and RPGs, for example, are major time sinks. I would probably cry if I looked at my total time spent during the golden age of World of War-craft.‎ ‎ If you’re having a hard time stepping away from these kinds of games because there’s so much to do in them, cut them out of your gaming diet. 33 . That way, you can play in short bursts. I still indulge in these kinds of games occasionally, but I don’t play as much as I used to.‎ Figure Out What You’re Escaping ‎ Video games are a fun way to de-stress and also one of the most advanced forms of escapism out there. To reduce my gaming thirst I started looking at my escapism habits from another angle. 34 .‎ ‎ Video games do offer a nice respite from the harsh truths of reality. More often than not, I would be able to identify the things that were stressing me out and making me want to escape to virtual worlds in the first place. If work was getting me down, I’d make a practical plan on how to improve it instead of grapping a controller. 35 . The real world doesn’t always offer that, but it never will if you always run from the issues in your life.‎ ‎ A. Why not get away from the game you are crazy about?‎ ‎ B. Shift your focus to games that are more pick-up-and-play.‎ ‎ C. Then add up your total gaming time at the end of each week.‎ ‎ D. We find it hard to get rid ourselves of the addiction to games ‎ E. I asked myself “What am I hiding from?” and worked from there.‎ ‎ F. Some games require a much bigger time investment than other games.‎ ‎ G. We often run to video games because they make us feel powerful and in control.‎ 第三部分:英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。‎ Last spring, I was fortunate to be chosen to participate in an exchange study program.
