He even reached a point where he felt like he had nothing to live for. “I was walking around with a lot on my shoulders,” he said. “I couldn’t handle it. I didn’t care about life anymore.” But all that started to change when Wright met Patricia Kelly. “I was seven when I met Mrs. Kelly. I wasn’t used to strictness. I wasn’t used to hearing the word ‘no’.” said Wright, now 17. Kelly, a former soldier and an equestrian(骑手), took Wright under her wing and helped him find hope in an unlikely place—on a horse. “Wright was like a round peg that everybody kept trying to squeeze into a square hole,” Kelly said. “He was hurting. He needed a place where he could express himself. The riding field became that place for him.” For the last 30 years, Kelly has helped children stay on the right track through her nonprofit, Ebony Horsewomen. The program offers horseback riding lessons and teaches animal science to more than 300 young people a year. By exposing(使体验) those children to horsemanship, Kelly aims to give them an alternative to the streets and an opportunity to turn their lives around. “We use horses as a tool to create pride, esteem and healing,” said Kelly, 66. “They learn that they have ability. They just have to unlock it.” “When you teach a child to ride a horse, they learn they are the center of their environment,” said Kelly. “Once they make that connection, they can change what happens in school, at home and in the community.” 24. Why did Fred Wright have to move from one school to another? A.He didn’t set a life goal. B.His parents got divorced. C.He behaved badly at school. D.His mother couldn’t afford the fees. 25. How did Patricia Kelly help Fred Wright? A.She found him a better school. B.She provided him with a home. C.She exposed him to the riding field. D.She encouraged him to learn science. 26. What do we know about the program Ebony Horsewomen? A.It is intended to make money. B.It was founded by Patricia Kelly. C.It aims to protect the environment. D.It serves as a shelter for homeless kids. 27. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs? A.It is hard for a kid to learn to ride a horse. B.Patricia Kelly is a very successful woman. C.Horse riding is helpful to the growth of kids. D.Horses are closely related to the environment. C Most American students go to traditional public schools. There are about 88,000 public schools all over the US. Some students attend about 3,000 independent public schools called charter schools. Charter schools are self-governing. Private companies operate some charter schools. They are similar in some ways to traditional public schools. They receive tax just as other public schools do. Charter schools must prove to local or state governments that their students are learning. These governments provide the schools with the agreement called a charter that permits them to operate. Charter schools are different because they do not have to obey most laws governing traditional public schools. Local, state or federal governments cannot tell them what to teach. Each school can choose its own goals and decide the ways it wants to reach them. Class size is usually smaller than in traditional public schools. Governments strongly support charter schools as a way to reorganize public schools that are failing to educate students. But some education agencies and unions oppose charter schools. One teachers' union has just published the results of the first national study comparing the progress of students in traditional schools and charter schools. The American Federation of Teachers criticized the government's delay in releasing the results of the study, which is called the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Union education experts say the study shows that charter school students performed worse in math and reading tests than students in regular public schools. Some experts say the study is not a fair look at charter schools because students in those schools have more problems than students in traditional schools. Other education experts say the study results should make charter school officials demand more student progress. 28. If a private company wants to operate a charter school, it must ________. A.obey all local and state laws B.try new methods of teaching C.prove its management ability D.get the government’s permission 29. Charter schools are independent because________. A.their class size is smaller B.they enjoy more freedom C.they make greater progress D.they oppose traditional ways 30. What’s the governments’ attitude toward charter schools? A.Doubtful. B.Supportive. C.Subjective. D.Optimistic. 31. What can we learn from the text? A.Students in charter schools are well educated. B.More students choose to attend charter schools. C.Charter schools are better than traditional schools. D.People have different opinions about charter schools.
