But you may not know that its founder is a female scientist and goes through a lot on her way to make scientific research. Rosalind Franklin was born in London, England on July 25, 1920. On April 16, 1958, at age 38, she died from cancer. Franklin was responsible for much of the research and discovery work that led to the understanding of the structure of DNA.‎ Franklin was interested in science and attended one of the few girls' schools in London that taught physics and chemistry. When she was 15, she decided to become a scientist. Her father was decidedly against higher education for women and wanted her to be a social worker. Franklin's aunt decided to support her and she agreed to pay for her full schooling. Within weeks, Franklin's aunt got her mother to support her going to college also. Months later, Franklin's aunt and mother got her father to agree with it. Franklin was very excited that she was going to college and did a good job in her study.‎ After her graduation from college, Franklin started her research on DNA. However, there were so many quarrels in her life because Franklin and her research partner did not get along. Franklin and her partner's arguments set them back on the study of DNA quite a bit. At the time they were working against another pair to find the story of DNA. Because of Franklin and her partner's fights, another pair found the structure of DNA first and won the Nobel Prize for itfour years after Franklin died. Many scientists felt sorry for her early death and thought that the winners had stolen her research about DNA.‎ ‎24.We can learn from the text that Franklin ________.‎ A.died in her early thirtiesB.was a really lucky scientist C.didn't get along with her fatherD.achieved a lot in the study of DNA ‎25.From the second paragraph we know ________.‎ A.Franklin's father agreed to pay for her college education B.Franklin's aunt loved her than others C.it was not easy for Franklin to go to college D.it has been Franklin's dream to be a scientist sinceshe was a child ‎26.We can learn from Paragraph 3 that ________.‎ A.Franklin's scientific research was not easy ‎ B.Franklin first found the structure of DNA C.Franklin's partner had no interest in DNA D.Franklin had enjoyed a peaceful life ‎27.What's the best title for the text?‎ A.How DNA Was Found?B.DNA and Good Education C.The Life of a Woman ScientistD.Should Girls Study or Not?‎ C It’s unbelievable that plant growth has something to do with gardeners’ sex. The Royal Horticulture Society (RHS) finds that women gardeners' voices speed up the growth of tomato plants much more than men's. ‎ In an experiment, the research found that tomato plants grew up to two inches taller if they were sung to by a female rather than a male.‎ The most effective voice came from Sarah Darwin, whose greatgreat grandfather was the botanist (植物学家), Charles Darwin, one of the founding fathers of the RHS. ‎ In the experiment, every plant was played a different voice, and the environmental conditions for all the plants remained the same throughout the experiment. Sarah Darwin read a passage from On the Origin of Species and beat nine other “voices”. Her plant grew nearly two inches taller than the best performing male and half an inch taller than her nearest competitor. To prove the results of the experiment, two plants were also left to grow in silence. ‎ Colin Crosbie, Garden Manager at the RHS, said, “We just don't know why. It could be because they have a greater range of pitch (音高) and tone (音色) that affects the sound waves that hit the plant. Sound waves are an environmental effect just like rain or light.” Also the results showed that women's plants rose by an inch more than men's and much more than the plants left in complete silence. ‎ Sarah Darwin said, “I'm not sure if it's my sweet tones or the text that I read from On the Origin of Species that made the plants listen, but either way, I think it is an honor to have such a voice, and especially fit for me, because for years I have been studying wild tomatoes at the Natural History Museum (NHM) in London. ”‎ ‎28.What is the purpose of this passage? ‎ A.To prove that women are better gardeners than men. ‎ B.To report the results of an experiment on tomato plants.‎ C.To explain which kind of voice is better for plant growth. ‎ D.To explain the reason for the experiment results.‎ ‎29.How many tomato plants were chosen for this experiment? ‎ A.9. B.10. C.11. D.12.‎ ‎30.What can we learn about Sarah Darwin? ‎ A.She is one of the founders of the RHS. ‎ B.She will work at the NHM in London after the experiment. ‎ C.She discovered why her voice benefited plants. ‎ D.She is very proud of her sweet voice. ‎ ‎31.What can be inferred from the passage? ‎ A.Men's voices have a greater range of pitch and tone than women's. ‎ B.Texts from On the Origin of Species can make plants grow faster. ‎ C. Sarah's nearest competitor was also a woman. ‎ D.Colin Crosbie predicted that women's voices were better for plants than men's. ‎ D Have you ever thought about what our life will be like in the future? Will it be more convenient? The answer is absolutely yes. Let’s just have a look at our future home. Someone has put forward a dream home which is so advanced that its kitchen can suggest what to make with certain things. Also, a Microsoft home doesn't just warn you when you're out of milk — it can send for a fresh gallon.‎ But are these innovations (创新) just magic, or are they really coming soon to a neighborhood near you? To find out, US News asked some experts to get their opinions about the home of the notsodistant future. Here's a look at the innovations.‎ The housing boom (迅速发展) was marked by massproduced(大量生产的) buildings filled with units which look the same. The coming years, however, will give way to a personalized (个性化的) approach to home constructionwith houses as more of an instrument of selfexpression. “The successful builders will be the ones that figure ‎ out how to change their production model enough to make the buyers feel like they are really getting something that is designed for them, not just a model,” says Kermit Baker, the chief economist at the American Institute of Architects.‎ Future homes will probably shrink.“We will be building smaller but smarter houses,” says Ed McMahon, a senior resident fellow at the Urban Land Institute. “Instead of having a room for just one use, consumers will demand homes that make better use of space,”says Susanka, whose bestselling book, The Not So Big House, has become increasingly influential in home design. Seldomused spaces, such as dining and living rooms, will be replaced with space that can serve both functions. “The goal of this ‘rightsize’ home is to fit its owners like a specially cut suit rather than a jacket you buy in a store,”says Susanka.‎ ‎32.Why does the writer mention a dream home and a Microsoft home?‎ A.To tell us something about future houses.‎ B.To tell us that technology develops fast.‎ C.To lead to the topic of the passage.‎ D.To tell us what kind of house to buy.‎ ‎33.According to the third paragraph, future houses will ________. ‎ A.express the owners' personalitiesB.have a lot of things in common C.be massproducedD.be designed by the owners themselves ‎34.The underlined word “shrink” in the last paragraph can be replaced by “________”.‎ A.become cleanerB.become more comfortable C.become brighterD.become smaller ‎35.What is this passage mainly about?‎ A.The writer's ideas about future houses.‎ B.Some experts' opinions about future houses.‎ C.What life in the future will be like.‎ D.The development of houses.‎ 第二节 ‎(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项是多余选项。‎ We blink and a year has passed. We’ve all heard or found ourselves saying, “They grow up so fast,” or “The years just flew by.” 1 It just doesn’t make any sense. How can one year feel faster than another?‎ ‎1.Reform your mornings.‎ Wake, work. Home. Repeat. Sound familiar? You need to take back some of the morning to yourself, even if it means getting up 15 minutes earlier. Give yourself those few extra minutes so you have time to actually sit with your morning drink and consider your day ahead. 2 ‎ ‎2.Take notice of where you are.‎ Life’s like climbing a mountain, you’re so concerned about where you are heading that sometimes you forget to stop and check the view. Stop worrying about the future and regretting about the past. 3 Learn some simple mindful meditation(冥想) techniques.‎ ‎3.Create new experiences.‎ The world is full of opportunities to do something new. Why not give yourself a task? Do any of your friends or relatives have key birthdays coming up? 4 or challenge yourself to do something for charity---maybe a half marathon or triathlon.‎ ‎4. 5 .‎ Some of the smallest things can make a huge difference, like putting pen to paper. How many of us can name what we did every night last week, without having to make an effort to go through the week in our busy minds in order to bring it back? Simply taking the time to write in a journal forces you to stop and reflect, slowing down your day.‎ ‎ A. Write in a journal B. Organize an event for them.‎ C. Life seems to be speeding up.‎ D. Do something different from your normal routine.‎ E. Focus on where you are right now instead.‎ F. Take time to notice the small differences of each season.‎ G. Use this time to do something for yourself.‎ 第II卷 第三部分:英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节 ‎:完型填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ There’s no doubt that heroism comes from the heart.
