B Next time you raise an eyebrow at the views of your partner, friend, brother, sister or colleague, remember they could be helping to make you smarter. New research shows that intelligence is not fixed but can be improved throughout adulthood by family members, bright mates and intellectually challenging careers. The study challenges the commonly held belief that intelligence is fixed by the age of about 18. Scientific consensus (共识) suggests intelligence is controlled by genes, with environmental factors such as schooling and nutrition playing a part up to this age. After this point, IQ scores become steady. But James Flynn, professor at the University of Otago in New Zealand, argues that people can “upgrade” their intelligence throughout their lives. He believes intellectual stimulation(刺激) from other people is important as the “brain seems to be rather like a muscle---the more you use it, the stronger it gets”. However, the opposite is also true --- so people who share a home or workplace with the intellectually challenged risk seeing their IQ levels nosedive as a result. Professor Flynn analyzed US intelligence tests from the last 65 years and created new IQ “age tables”. He found a bright ten-year-old with brothers and sisters of average intelligence will suffer a five to ten point IQ disadvantage compared to a similar child with equally bright brothers and sisters. However, children with a low IQ could gain six to eight points by having brighter brothers and sisters and special educational treatment to help pull them up. Professor Flynn concluded that although genetics and early life experiences determine about 80% of intelligence, the remaining 20% is linked to lifestyle. This means people can raise their IQ, or allow it to fall, by ten points or more. He suggests the best way to improve IQ levels is to socialize with bright friends, and find an intellectually challenging job. 24. According to the text, it is commonly believed that ______. A. people’s IQ levels fall as they age B. it is wise to share family members’ views C. people can’t improve their intelligence during adulthood D. doing something challenging is good for one’s intelligence 25. The underlined word “nosedive” in Paragraph 2 most probably means ______ A. vary B. develop C. change D. fall 26. Which of the following can help improve one’s intelligence according to Professor Flynn? - 15 - A. Making many friends B. Staying with smart people C. Doing exercise every day. D. Learning from brothers or sisters 27. The purpose of the text is to ________. A. inform B. advertise C. entertain D. persuade C On a July afternoon in 1937, 15-year-old Betty Brown was playing with her father’s shortwave radio at home in Florida. She was searching for her favorite songs so she could copy the lyrics down in a notebook. While daydreaming, Brown casually turned the dial on the radio until she heard something that made her stop. It was a voice that sounded familiar. Back in those days, news clips (新闻摘要) were played at movie theaters. Brown recognized the voice from one of the news films she had seen. “ I heard Amelia Earhart in a panicked voice, a heartbreaking voice,” Brown recalled in a 2007 interview. “ She was saying, ‘This is Amelia Earhart Putnam, please help me. Please hear me.” Brown quickly began writing down what she heard---parts of desperate conversations between the woman she believed was Earhart and an unknown man. Later, she decided that the man must have been Earhart’s navigator (领航员),Fred Noonan. As the signal faded in and out, Brown never left the radio. She scribbled (潦草地写) away as Earhart and Noonan struggled for control of the radio. Earhart tried to prevent Noonan from leaving the plane after they had apparently crash-landed. All the while, Earhart repeated strings of numbers and mentioned rising water. After about three hours, Earhart and Noonan were seemingly forced to abandon the plane as it was filled with water, and the distress calls (求救信号) stopped. Brown and her father both tried to give her notes to the United States Coast Guard, but they were told the situation was under control. The search for Earhart was abandoned after a great effort was made, and Brown eventually stopped trying to tell people what she heard. But she kept her notebook. In 2000, people from an organization researching Earhart’s disappearance asked to see it. The researchers were convinced that Brown’s notes were reliable. If the researchers are right, the notes are a priceless, yet sorrowful, record of the sad ending of an American hero. 28. Betty Brown stayed by the radio for so long because she _______. A. was waiting for her music to come back on B. enjoyed recording people’s conversations C. wanted to gather more information about Earhart’s situation D. wanted to take notes for a book about Earhart 29. From the Coast Guard’s reaction to Brown, we can infer that the Coast Guard ________. A. did not want to look for Earhart B. did not believe Brown heard Earhart C. wanted Brown to help them find Earhart - 15 - D. already knew where Earhart was 30. Why did Brown most likely keep her notebook for so long? A. She hoped that it would be worth some money. B. She felt Amelia Earhart would someday be found. C. She wanted to write a song about Amelia Earhart. D. She believed it contained valuable information. 31. Which word can best describe Brown? A. Determined B. Forgetful C. Independent D. Careless 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(答题卡涂在36-40题上,32-35放空白) It’s 4 a.m. The clock ticks, the dog snores and you just stare. And you know you shouldn’t be staring – you should be sleeping! 36 , and it’s hard to fall asleep when you’re mad . So what do you do? The tips below might help you sleep easier. Here’s the advice of Eric Olson and Harneet Walia, two doctors from the Cleveland Clinic’s Sleep Disorders Center: ·Get out of bed When you lie awake in bed, you send yourself the wrong message. As Walia says, you’re basically training your body not to sleep in bed, but to lie there and not sleep. 37 . Olson puts it another way: “The longer we lie there and get frustrated in that environment, the more we come to expect it next time we’re there. 38 . ”So if you’re unable to sleep, slip into your bunny slippers and out of the room. ·Try relaxation techniques Use whatever relaxation tips you know to fight against this inappropriately timed wakefulness. 39 . You simply note the rising and falling of your breath, and focus on the parts of your body where you feel your breath, whether it’s in the lungs, tip of your nose or elsewhere. · 40 Sometimes the sleeplessness arises from worry. Your brain is overworking, thinking about your bank account and the big meeting tomorrow. For people who consistently have trouble quieting the mind at night, Olson suggests trying to train your mind to think about those things at more appropriate times of the day. A. Erase anxiety B. Figure out appropriate times C. Your mind can get used to that D. Try your favorite calming yoga pose E. You need to develop a regular sleep schedule F. We come to associate the bedroom with not sleeping well G. Leave him where he is. Third, we can ask simple questions such as “Are you OK?” to make the person’s condition clear. Fourth, we need to check the person’s breathing. If it is difficult for him to breathe, we should try to start his breathing right away with the mouth-to- mouth method.
