Mrs. Smith's dog was hungry, but there was not any meat in the house. Considering that there was no better way, Mrs. Smith took a piece of paper, and wrote the following words on it: “Give my dog half a pound of meat.” Then she gave the paper to her dog and said gently: “Take this to the butcher(屠夫). And he's going to give you your lunch today.”‎ ‎ Holding the piece of paper in its mouth, the dog ran to the butcher's. It gave the paper to the butcher. The butcher read it carefully, recognized that it was really the lady's handwriting and soon did it as he was asked to. The dog was very happy, and ate the meat up at once.‎ ‎ At noon, the dog came to the shop again. It gave the butcher a piece of paper again. After reading it, he gave it half a pound of meat once more.‎ The next day, the dog came again exactly at noon. And as usual, it brought a piece of paper in the mouth. This time, the butcher did not take a look at paper, and gave the dog its meat, for he had regarded the dog as one of his customers.‎ But, the dog came again at four o'clock. And the same thing happened once again. To the butcher's more surprise, it came for the third time at six o'clock, and brought with it a third piece of paper. The butcher felt a bit puzzled. He said to himself, “This is a small dog. Why does Mrs. Smith give it so much meat to eat today?”‎ Looking at the piece of paper, he found that there were not any words on it!‎ ‎21.Mrs. Smith treated her little dog quite ____________.‎ A. kindly B. fairly C. cruelly D. impatiently ‎22.It seemed that the dog knew well that the paper Mrs. Smith gave it ____________.‎ A. might do it much harm B. would help the butcher ‎ C. could do it much good D. was worth many pounds ‎23.The butcher did not give any meat to the dog ____________.‎ A. when he found that the words on the paper were not clear B. before he felt sure that the words were really written by Mrs. Smith ‎ C. because he had sold out all the meat in his shop D. until he was paid enough by Mrs. Smith B It never occurred to anybody, not even the creators that the world would care about the complex lives, loves and sufferings of a group of attractive New Yorkers. But there’s no doubt that Friends(老友记)has become more than just a successful situation comedy ─ it has established itself as one of the last great television phenomena of the last century. Along the way, it has made its half-dozen leading actors famous.‎ Looking back on the strong friendship between the group of three men and three women who frequently gather at each other’s apartments and at Greenwich Village’s Central Perk coffee house, Friends was created by television producers, David Crane and Marta Kauffman. In 1993, the pair met producer Kevin S. Bright. Then the three became partners and got a deal to produce a new comedy for Warner Brothers. What they came up with was based on Crane and Kauffman’s after-college years, when they hung out at the local coffee house and involved themselves in every aspect of each other’s lives.‎ It didn’t take long for viewers to make friends with Friends. The situation comedy quickly became a top ten hit. Critics loved it as well. Entertainment Weekly said the show operated like a Broadway show, with twisty plots and unique jokes. The television theme song has also been a success with the public. The song’s success helped save the television theme song. An ABC(美国广播公司)executive was ready to order very short music intros(前奏) on his network’s shows, thinking that viewers would hit the remote control(遥控) as soon as the opening started. But the success of the Friends theme song led the ABC executive to change his mind ─ remote controls or not, the TV theme song would stay.‎ Years have gone by, but Friends remains and will remain an example of a modern US situation comedy that is both hugely entertaining television and nothing short of a genuine latter-day social phenomenon.‎ ‎24.What is stressed in the second paragraph?‎ A. The origin of Friends B. The role models of Friends C. The popularity of Friends D. The contents of Friends ‎25.Which of the following is TRUE about Friends?‎ A. It has a simple but entertaining plot. ‎ B. It first came into being in the 1990s.‎ C. It was criticized by Entertainment Weekly ‎ D. It is about friendship between college students.‎ ‎26.What can we learn from the passage?‎ A. Producer, Kevin S. Bright, graduated from the same college as David Crane.‎ B. ABC once replaced the theme song of its TV show with a short music intro.‎ C. Marta Kauffman expected Friends to achieve great success.‎ D. The ABC executive thought highly of the theme song of Friends.‎ ‎27.What might the author think of Friends?‎ A. Its advantages outweigh its disadvantages. ‎ ‎ B. He/she has a reserved attitude towards its success.‎ C. He/she shows great affection towards it.‎ D. Its success lies in the lack of good situation comedies.‎ C In China, chain restaurants, especially the big multinational ones, are cool. Going to Starbucks, for example, is a status symbol. It not only says, “I’m rich enough to buy this overpriced coffee,” but also, “I’m cosmopolitan(见多识广的)enough to be part of globalization.”‎ Where I come from in the UK, however, chains are neither fashionable nor gourmet (美食的). Chains are where you go on New Year’s Day when nowhere else is open, or when you are 5 years old and your parents can’t stand hearing, “I’m huuuuuungry!” any longer. In my own case (with regards to McDonald’s), a chain is where you are taken on your first “date”. Even at the age of 13, I knew to give the guy the “let’s just be friends” phone call the next day.‎ In the UK, independent cafes and restaurants are making a comeback on the fashion scene. Nowadays, a Londoner who says “let’s meet for a coffee at Monmouth” (an independent cafe) is much cooler than one who says “let’s go to Starbucks”. Even if Monmouth’s coffee is a little more expensive, there’s a satisfaction in knowing your pounds aren’t going straight to the big corporations.‎ Of course, there are chain stores all over the UK; you can’t go five minutes without spotting a Costa Coffee. But numbers do not add up to good taste.‎ I do, however, have a confession (坦白). After moving to China I had moments when all the rice and Kung Pao Chicken became too much. I, too, have retreated to McDonald’s.‎ ‎28.What does the underlined word (in the last paragraph) mean?‎ A. adapted B. switched C. subscribed D. contributed ‎29.Many Chinese people like to go to multinational chain restaurants because ______.‎ A. the restaurants give customers a taste of foreign culture.‎ B. the restaurants offer different food and drinks from other restaurants.‎ C. these restaurants are perfect places for a romantic date.‎ D. they believe that eating there will show their wealth and social status.‎ ‎30.Which of the following statements is TRUE?‎ A. Most independent stores are closed on New Year’s Day in the UK.‎ B. Branches of Monmouth’s cafe can be found all over the UK.‎ C. The author has grown tired of Chinese food.‎ D. It is cool in the UK to take your first date to a chain restaurant.‎ ‎31.We can infer from the article that ______.‎ A. the author doesn’t like food from Pizza Hut.‎ B. the author doesn’t like to follow fashion trends.‎ C. many Britons don’t like big corporations.‎ D. many Britons think that numbers mean poor quality.‎ D California places limits on water use to deal with the state’s four-year drought. Californians are feeling the heat after Governor Jerry Brown announced an order that puts mandatory(强制的) statewide water cutbacks into effect.‎ California has faced water-use cutbacks in the past. In January 2014, Governor Brown called for residents to curb their water use by 20 percent, but many places around the state failed to meet that goal. This most recent announcement, however, marks the first time in the state’s history that mandatory restrictions have been ordered.‎ Most of California’s water supply comes from the Sierra Nevada mountain range snowpack. Normally, during the spring and summer, this snow melts and puts new supplies into groundwater. But this past winter, the snowpack reached its lowest point since 1950. “Today we are standing on dry grass where there should be feet of snow” announced Governor Brown.‎ As part of his order, Governor Brown called upon the state Water Resource Control Board to draft emergency rules for water use in the coming month. Cities and towns across the state must cut water usage by 25 percent. If city water agencies fail to meet these targets for water conservation, they could be fined $10,000 a day.‎ The state will also support local governments in replacing 50 million square feet of lawns with drought-tolerant plants that use less water. Outdoor lawn watering will be limited to two days per week, and residents will not be permitted to water their lawns during rainstorms and for two days afterwards. The order also asks local water agencies to raise the price of water to discourage excessive water use.‎ Governor Brown said change may not be easy, but it’s necessary to ensure that residents can fill their water glasses into the future. “it is a wake-up call,” he said. “It’s requiring action and changes in behavior.”‎ ‎32. What does the underlined word “curb” in the second paragraph mean? A. schedule B. increase C. measure D. reduce ‎33. Why will local government remove the 50 million square feet of lawns?‎ A. To get rid of dry grass B. To decrease the use of water C. To develop the land for water storage D. To grow plants that can block rainstorms ‎34. This year’s drought in California is mainly caused by .‎ A. The lack of rainfall last winter. ‎ B. Its residents’ excessive water use.‎ C. The historically low temperature last winter.‎ D. The reduction of snowpack on the Sierra Nevada ‎35. According to the new order, Californians should .‎ A. Keep the emergency rules for water use in mind B. Avoid watering their lawns before rainstorms.‎ C. Water their lawns every three or four days. ‎ D. Take mandatory lessons on water conservation. ‎ 第二节(共5个小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Whatever burdens you’re carrying now,let them down for a moment if you can. 36 ‎ Do your most difficult task first in the morning. Pushing a challenging task back is like holding a glass of water in an outstretched arm. At first nothing happens, but if you do it for hours or even days, you will soon feel the stress. Get the most annoying task done first and you’ll enjoy the peace of mind for the rest of the day.‎ Let go of things you can’t control. You make plans to go outside with friends. But at the last minute,it starts raining. Some people become upset and start complaining. You’d better not. The rain won’t stop just because of your complaint. 37 What I do in such situation is going for a quick walk in the park or just lie in bed reading a good book, listening to the rain beating on my window.‎ ‎38 Just make a list of three simple things about any part of your life that you love. This is a great technique if you’re ever bored while stuck in traffic,or waiting in the grocery store checkout lane. You can immediately transform boredom into happiness and peace of mind!‎ Relax your body. Just walk to a window, look outside, and then take a single deep breath, focusing only on that breath and nothing else in the whole world. 39 ‎ Talk to friends about your stress. Talking to friends about your worries can often be beneficial. 40 The simple act of speaking about anxieties can make them seem more manageable.‎ A.With physical relaxation, you can also increase your peace of mind.‎ B.Those who care about you can offer support.‎ C.Instead, make the best of the situation.‎ D.Avoid situations that cause you to feel anxious.‎ E.List three things you love.‎ F.Don’t worry about what others are thinking of you.‎ G.Here are some simple ways to increase your peace of mind.‎ 第二部分:完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文, 掌握其大意,然后从题目所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。‎ Manners nowadays in big cities like London are particularly non-existent. It’s 41 for a big, strong schoolboy to push an elderly woman aside for the last 42 seat on the bus, much less stand up and offer his seat to her, as he ought to. In fact, it is a 43 to note that if a man does offer his seat to an older woman, it is nearly always a man of the older 44. ‎ This question of 45 seats in public transport is much argued by young men, who say that, since women have claimed 46, they no longer deserve to be treated 47 and that those who go out to work should take their turn in the rat race like anyone else. Women have never claimed to be 48 as strong as men. Even if it’s not 49 that young men should stand up for older women, however, the fact remains that good manners should be shown to the old, the 50 and the burdened. Are we really so lost to all ideals of 51 that we can sit there calmly reading the paper or a book, saying to ourselves “First come, first served”, while a gray-haired woman, or a mother with a young child stands? 52 this is too often seen. ‎ Older people, tired and easily 53 from a day’s work, aren’t angels, either. Many a sudden argument or a fierce quarrel 54 as the tired people push and pull each other to get on buses or tubes. ‎ If cities are to remain pleasant places to 55 in at all, however, it seems necessary, not only that communication in 56 should be improved, but also that communication between human beings should be kept smooth and 57. Shop assistants won’t bother to 58, taxi drivers shout at each other as they drive dangerously round corners, bus conductors pull the bell 59 their desperate passengers have had time to get on or off the bus, and so on. It seems to us that it’s up to the young and strong to do their small 60 to stop such “worsening”. ‎ ‎41. A. something B.everything C. anything D. nothing ‎ ‎42.
