B Hidden in the mountains of Jordan is the beautiful ancient city of Petra. It lay in ruins for more than a thousand years. Petra was built in 312 BC by the Nabataeans who were an ancient southern Arab people. They were very skilled at carving(刻).It is no wonder that this ancient city has so much to offer! In 363 AD, the city suffered from terrible earthquakes that left most of the city damaged. The buildings and the city’s water system were affected.A Swiss explorer,Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, discovered this city of wonders in 1812.Until he discovered Petra, it had been unheard of in the Western world for about 5 centuries! Petra is the Greek word for stone and this name makes perfect sense because of where the city is located and how some of it is carved into the rock. The ancient city of Petra is also known as the “Rose City”.This is because the rock in which the city is built is a rose-red colour. Many of the buildings of Petra have beautiful facades(正面).Some of the facades have columns(柱) carved into the rock, but they are for decoration and they don’t actually hold anything up. Petra was built in the middle of the desert, where it hardly ever rained.Luckily, the Nabataeans were very skilled engineers and knew how to live in a hot and dry place.First, they carved channels(渠) to bring water from a nearby spring into the city.Rainwater was also collected in underground channels. The water was then stored. So, even in the long dry months there was enough water for people to use. Today, Petra is one of the world’s most famous ancient sites and people come from all over the world to visit it. 24.What do we know about Petra? A.It was destroyed by earthquakes. B.Some of it was filled with roses. C.Some of it was built into the rock. D.Some of it was home to animals. 26.What is the purpose of the columns? A.To serve as tools. B.To support the buildings. C.To function as gates. D.To beautify the buildings 27.Which word can best describe the Nabataeans? A.Honest B.Creative C.Hard-working D.Well-educated C From the first use of the rocket to carry satellites into space to the setting up of space stations, human beings have been putting great effort into space research. And so far, we have achieved many successes. But there are still numerous tasks in front of us and we should not stop trying to progress. The international space station(ISS)is an important step we should take in space exploration. It is not only helpful but also essential. It provides a proper space environment for many experiments that we have wanted to do for a long time. It is also a base for the observations of the earth and the universe. It could also be an important base for later travel to the moon and Mars. In a word, if we want to explore space more, the first thing we should do is to set up a space station. As the space station costs a lot of money, it is hard for one country alone to establish one. The USA seems to be the only country that has the ability to build a space station alone, and it has tried to do so, but not very successful. So it aggregated many other countries to work on it together. Though it is still extremely expensive, it is much cheaper than doing it alone. It is really a job that needs everyone’s effort and will benefit everyone. Led by the U. S. and Russia, the ISS is a joint project between six space agencies involving 16 countries. Called the greatest achievement in human cooperation, the ISS has come to the end of a ten-year’s hard work in construction. China has applied for participation in(taking part in)the project many times. Unfortunately all the applications were rejected, which drove China onto the path of independent development. As the Long March Ⅱ-F/T1 carrier rocket blasted off(left the ground)and successfully carried the Tiangong-1 into space on September 29, 2011, China took a big step toward its Space Station Era. Some West media suggested that the successful launch of Tiangong-1 would disturb the balance of global space power, raising concerns about “China threat”. China’s space project is not designed for military purpose but for developing space technology to explore space resources and make use of them for mankind’s well-being. 28. From Paragraph 2 we learn that______. A. the necessity of building the international space station is not realized now B. the international space station is necessary for people to explore space more C. many experiments have been done in the international space station D. people have traveled to Mars from the international space station 29. The underlined word “aggregated” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by “______”. A. united B. scolded C. allowed D. forbade 30. Which of the following is NOT a reason for countries’ cooperation in building the international space station? A. That it requires a lot of money. B. That it needs everyone’s effort. C. That it is too far away from the earth. D. That it will benefit every participating country 31. China wants to build its space station in order to______. A. break the balance of global space power B. show that China can build space station alone C. raise international concerns about “China threat” D. make use of space peacefully for mankind’s well-being D Students perform less well in final exams if smart-phones are allowed in class, for non-academic (非学业的) purposes in lectures, a new study in Educational Psychology finds. Students who don’t use smart-phones themselves but attend lectures where their use is acceptable also do worse, suggesting that smart-phone use damages the group learning environment. Researchers from Rutgers University in the US performed an in-class experiment to lest whether dividing attention between smart-phones and the lecturer during the class affected students’ performance in within-lecture tests and a final exam. 118 students at Rutgers University took part in the experiment during one term of their course. Smart-phones were not allowed in half of the lectures and allowed in the other half. When smart-phones were allowed, students were asked to record whether they had used them for non-academic purposes during the lecture. The study found that having a smart-phone didn’t lower students’ scores in comprehension tests within lectures, but it did lower scores in the final exam by at least 5%, or half a grade. This finding shows for the first time that the main effect of divided attention in the classroom is on the length of time in keeping memory, with fewer things of a study task later remembered. In addition, when the use of smart-phones was allowed in class, performance was also poorer for students who did not use them as well as for those who did. The study’s lead author, Professor Arnold Glass, added:”These findings should alarm students and teachers that dividing attention is having a not obvious but harmful effect that is damaging their exam performance and final grade. To help manage the use of smart-phones in the classroom, teachers should explain to students the alarming effect—not only for themselves, but for the whole class.” This is the first-ever study in an actual classroom showing a relationship between losing attention from smart-phones and exam performance. However, more researches are required to see how students are affected by using smart-phones after school. 32. What is the purpose of paragraph 1? A. To give details about the result of the experiment B. To explain how the experiment was carried out. C. To present the main findings of the experiment. D. To suggest what should be done for teachers and students. 33. We know from the experiment that having a smart-phone in class ________. A. made it harder for students to keep things in mind B. caused an average 5% drop in students’ scores C.had no bad effect if students do not use them D. had a bad effect on students’ performance in all tests 34. What’s Professor Glass’ attitude towards using smart-phones in class? A.He was in favor of it. B. He was against it. C. He cared little about it. D. He doubted the findings. 35. What is the research team likely to do next? A. To study the influence of using smart-phones after class. B. To call on schools to ban smart-phones completely. C. To find out ways to improve students’ memory. D. To do researches on focusing attention in actual classrooms. 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,共10分): 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选车能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Animals are living creatures and most of us often forget about this.
