To show this, she held up one chopstick, representing one person. Then she easily broke it into two pieces. Next, she tied several chopsticks together, representing a family. She showed the girls it was hard to break the tied chopsticks. This lesson about family unity stayed with the daughters as they grew up.‎ Helene An and her family own a large restaurant business in California. However, when Helene and her husband Danny left their home in Vietnam in 1975, they didn't have much money. They moved their family to San Francisco. There they joined Danny's mother, Diana, who owned a small Italian sandwich shop. Soon afterwards, Helene and Diana changed the sandwich shop into a small Vietnamese restaurant. The five daughters helped in the restaurant when they were young. However, Helene did not want her daughters to always work in the family business because she thought it was too hard.‎ Eventually the girls all graduated from college and went away to work for themselves, but one by one, the daughters returned to work in the family business. They opened new restaurants in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Even though family members sometimes disagreed with each other, they worked together to make the business successful. Daughter Elisabeth explains, "Our mother taught us that to succeed we must have unity, and to have unity we must have peace. Without the strength of the family, there is no business."‎ Their expanding business became a large corporation in 1996, with three generations of Ans working together. Now the Ans' corporation makes more than $20 million each year. Although they ‎ began with a small restaurant, they had big dreams, and they worked together. Now they are a big success.‎ ‎4. But it's not that unrealistic, with the development of China's high-speed railway system. And that's not all. China has an even greater high-speed railway plan to connect the country with Southeast Asia, and eventually Eastern Europe. China is negotiating to extend its own high-speed railway network to up to 17 countries in 10 to 15 years, eventually reaching London and Singapore.‎ China has proposed three such projects. The first would possibly connect Kunming with Singapore via Vietnam and Malaysia. Another could start in Urumqi and go through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and possibly to Germany. The third would start in the northeast and go north through Russia and then into Western Europe. The new system would still follow China's ‎ high-speed railway standard. And the trains would be able to go 346 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as some airplanes. Of course, there are some technical challenges to overcome. There are so many issues that need to be settled, such as safety, rail gauge(轨距), maintenance of railway tracks. But the key issue is really money. China is already spending hundreds of billions of yuan on domestic railway expansion.‎ China prefers that the other countries pay in natural resources rather than with capital investment. Resources from those countries could stream into China to sustain development. It'll be a win-win project. For other countries, the railway network will definitely create more opportunities for business, tourism and so on, not to mention the better communication among those countries.‎ For China, such a project would not only connect it with the rest of Asia and bring some much-needed resources, but would also help develop China's far west. We foresee that in the coming decades, millions of people will migrate to the western regions, where the land is empty and resources unused. With high-speed trains, people will set up factories and business centers in the west once and for all. And they'll trade with Central Asian and Eastern European countries.‎ ‎8. According to the passage, the greatest challenge to the new high-speed railway plan is _____.‎ A. technical issues B. safety of the system C. financial problems D. maintenance of railway tracks ‎9. China's new high-speed railway plan will be a win-win project because _______      .‎ A. China will get much-needed resources and develop its western regions. B. China and the countries involved will benefit from the project in various ways. C. China will develop its railway system and communication with other countries. D. The foreign countries involved will develop their railway transportation, business and tourism.‎ ‎10. Which of the following words best describes the author's attitude towards China's high-speed railway plan? ‎ A. Critical. B. Reserved. C. Doubtful D. Positive.‎ ‎11. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?‎ A. New Railway Standards B. Big Railway Dreams C. High-speed Bullet Trains D. International Railway Network D A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves— the positive and negative effects are just as lasting.‎ We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too ashamed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves loud is a healthy habit.‎ This “self-talk” helps us encourage ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”‎ Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably answer in a similar manner. Harsh (刻薄的) and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.‎ Words have power because of their lasting effects. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it true? Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.‎ Words have power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem (自尊) and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours ‎12. There is no need for us to feel ashamed when we talk to ourselves because _________ A. almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves B. talking to ourselves always gives us courage C. we can benefit from talking to ourselves D. it does no harm to have “self-talk” when we are alone ‎13. The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely ________ ‎ A. remind ourselves B. praise ourselves C. make ourselves relaxed D. give ourselves amusement ‎14. The author would probably hold the view that _________ A. encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers B. negative words may motivate us to make more progress C. people tend to remember friendly words D. it is better to think twice before talking to others ‎15. In which column of the newspaper are you most likely to read this passage? A. News. B. Fashion. C. Health .D. Now you are worried about gaining weight. If you want to lose weight, what you should first do is find out why you are overweight.‎ From your e-mail, it seems that there are two reasons: lack of exercise and an unbalanced diet. I have two suggestions. First, set aside time to exercise regularly. Only in this way can you keep slim. Second, eat more healthy food and stay away from junk food. There are stores that specialize in healthy food, which is a little more expensive but can make a big difference.‎ I hope my suggestions are helpful. Looking forward to your reply.‎ ‎ Yours,‎ ‎ Li Hua
