When he faced a problem, he always chose to complain about it instead of finding a way to solve it. That was not right. Ted was healthy and had received a good education. He should and could find a good job and work hard to feed himself, but he just complained all day, drifting from one job to another. One day, I read about a farmer called Chris and told Ted about the farmer. Chris works hard, performs many jobs around the farm. But Chris is not exactly like other farmers. What makes him different is that he was born without arms or legs. But this has not stopped him from working hard and getting things done. Now, you may ask, is this possible? Like many other amazing people who have no arms or legs, Chris does not focus on what he can’t do, but rather on what he can do. And he can do a lot! He drives farm vehicles and looks after crops. Once you see Chris in action, you will think there is nothing he could not do. Chris is a great example of a person who is making the most of his gifts. His positive attitude and courage make him a true inspiration. After I told Ted about Chris, he became silent. Compared with Chris, Ted was much luckier. Then luckily, I saw Ted’s change. Do you like complaining? If you do, think about Chris. Such a man chooses to stay positive. Why don’t we? 4. What makes Chris different from other farmers? A. Being very positive. B. Having no arms or legs. C. Working harder than anyone else. D. Never complaining. 5. What does Chris focus on? A. Things he can do. B. His disadvantages. C. Other people’s attitude. D. Jobs around the farm. 6. After hearing about Chris’ story, Ted probably______. A. decided to find a better job B. realized that he could do more jobs C. changed his attitude towards farmers D. stopped complaining and worked hard 7. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 4 mean? A. He receives a lot of presents and feels happy. B. He is a person who devotes himself to his career. C. He is clever enough to achieve his aim without efforts. D. He is a lazy person and only depends on others’ advice. B 5. A 6. D 7. What makes him different is that he was born without arms or legs. Chris does not focus on what he can’t do, but rather on what he can do. C An Italian company has created the world’s first underwater farm. The station named Nemo’s Garden consists of five biospheres(生物圈) fixed to the bottom of the sea off the coast of Savona, Italy. They’re being used to grow strawberries, beans, garlic, and lettuce. “The main target of this project is to create other sources of plant production in areas where environmental conditions make it difficult to grow crops through traditional farming, including lack of fresh water, fertile soil, and extreme temperature changes,’’ said project spokesperson Luca Gamberini. The five biospheres, currently floating between depths of 18 and 36 feet, are constantly watched by Ocean Reef Group —— a diving equipment company——from a control center on dry land. According to various news reports, the plants are watered by drips of water on the inner walls of the biospheres. With a constant temperature of 79 degrees day and night, and humidity(湿度) at around 83 percent, the conditions are ideal for plants to grow well. The high amount of carbon dioxide also encourages growth. Ocean Reef president Sergio Gamberini said he came up with the idea of growing plants underwater during a summer vacation in Italy. In his own words, he wanted to do something that’s different and to show the beauty of the ocean. After two years of failed attempts, they finally were able to get these five biospheres working. Their success may lay the foundation for a new form of crop production that can be done without harming the environment. In fact, the biosphere seems to be attracting wildlife. Octopuses(章鱼) and endangered seahorses are taking shelter under the structure, while crabs(螃蟹) are climbing up the anchors and into the greenhouses. None of the creatures have damaged the plants so far. “It’s so kind of science-fiction to see these two different forms of life interact,” Gamberini said. 8. Why was the underwater farm created? A. To help explore the sea. B. To protect sea creatures. C. To improve the sea environment D. To find a new way of growing crops. 9. Sergio Gamberini got the idea of growing plants underwater _______. A. by chance B. from science fiction C. after reading a news report D. after two years of failed attempts 10. The last paragraph is written mainly to tell us that _____. A. the plants in the biosphere is protected B. the biosphere is environmentally friendly C. sea creatures may do harm to the biosphere D. sea creatures like the plants in the biosphere 11. What is the text mainly about? A. The undersea exploration. B. Growing plants without soil. C. A biosphere that attracts wildlife. D. The world’s first underwater farm. D 9. A 10. B 11. 根据文章第二段“The main target of this project is to create other sources of plant production in areas where environmental conditions make it difficult to grow crops through traditional farming, 可知,通过传统耕作方式环境条件使之很难生长的作物在这个海底农场可以生长创造出来,故海底农场的建立就是为了创造新的种植庄稼的方式,选D。 9. Ocean Reef president Sergio Gamberini said he came up with the idea of growing plants underwater during a summer vacation in Italy. In fact, the biosphere seems to be attracting wildlife. An Italian company has created the world’s first underwater farm. 此时,要注意一些转折词,如but, yet, however, although, in spite of, by contrast, on the contrary等。 An Italian company has created the world’s first underwater farm. D。 D I recently posted a picture on Facebook from the movie Mad Max, a film where two groups race through the desert in steampunk vehicles, and wrote, “Actual picture of my way to work today.” It was meant to be a joke because of the sandstorms in Beijing, but one of my friends from back home thought it was real. I couldn’t imagine how they could think that is actually what China is like. China has so many more conveniences and advantages than the West, and many of my friends agree. “I don’t know how I will be able to deal when I go back home,” said a friend who is about to end her gap year in Beijing. “I’ve become so spoiled in China.” China seems to be leading the way in innovation(创新) and convenience for daily life. Back home I could never shop, pull out my phone and scan a QR code to pay. There have been rumors of starting bike sharing in my hometown for years with little success while bike sharing suddenly appeared in Beijing overnight. I just step outside and scan a code, and I am on my way. Going out to eat with a group of friends back home was troublesome for both the group and the servers. Splitting bills and swiping(刷) 10 different cards or making change for each person in the group can be a pain. But with China’s WeChat, you can quickly send your friends your part of the bill. The list goes on… When I first arrived in Beijing, I was dead set on leaving in a month. That month has come and gone. Now, when someone asks me when I’m coming back, I think to myself, “Who knows?” While my friends think I am riding through the desert on a motorbike, I am actually taking a Didi for what is the equivalent of $5 in the US. With all the conveniences and technology here, I may never want to go back. 12. What’s the function of Paragraph 1? A. To introduce a movie. B. To introduce the topic. C. To tell an interesting story. D. To show the weather in Beijing. 13. How did the author feel when he first came to Beijing? A. He didn’t want to stay long. B. He couldn’t stand the weather. C. He never wanted to go back home. D. He was amazed at the bike sharing. 14. What can we infer from the text? A. China is the first country to start bike sharing. B. The author has become used to mobile payment in China. C. People always use WeChat to pay when eating out in the US. D. The author’s friends all know the convenience of living in China. 15. What does the text intend to tell us? A. Bike sharing has spread all over China. B. Foreigners have misunderstandings of China. C. Life in foreign countries is not as easy as we thought. D. Technology has brought much convenience in China. B 13. A 14. B 15. When I first arrived in Beijing, I was dead set on leaving in a month. Back home I could never shop, pull out my phone and scan a QR code to pay. Knowing your neighbors can make you feel safer and can make your life a little more enjoyable. ___16___ Start a Facebook group. There are→were 3.students 4.after→before 5. in front加of 6. extremely 7. relax me→myself 8. because→ but 9. which →whose 10.well → better 【解析】试题分析:文章讲述了作者参加一次英语演讲比赛的事情,虽然结果不好,但是从中学到了很多。 1. 此处是固定短语:take part in:参加,不需要加冠词a,故去掉a。 2. 本文第一句话Last week就提醒了是过去时间,故将are改为were。 4. 此处是固定短语in front of:在…… 参考词汇: 主席president 竞选 run for Good afternoon, my dear friends, ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ Thank you. Good afternoon, my dear friends, My name is Li Jin.
