He lives in South London, and for the last three years he has been working from home. He prefers working from home because he can spend more time with his family and have a better work-life balance. Sunjit isn’t alone: in Britain, there are 2.1 million people who work from home at present. In addition, about eight million people spend some time working in the home rather than in an office. This is almost twice as many as ten years ago. This rapidly-growing trend (趋势) towards working from home is the same in many countries. But what are the reasons for it? The main reason is technological: easy access (接近) to broadband and the availability of phone and video-conferencing. These make it possible for people to use their home as an office in an efficient (高效的) and cost-effective way. Other reasons for homeworking are the benefits to both employers and employees: office space is costly, so if an organisation can reduce its workstations, it may be able to move to a smaller site. Employees often work better at home: travelling to work can be a waste of time and tiring. Many homeworkers save a lot of time if they don’t travel to work and they can start the day fresher and therefore work more efficiently; parents with young children appreciate the flexibility (灵活性) that homeworking allows and are more relaxed. Sunjit Patel says, “I have been working from home since my son was born and have been really enjoying it. But I can tell you that homeworking requires special skills like self-discipline (自律 ) and time management. I’ve known my boss and workmates for a long time now, which really helps because you’ve got to trust each other. You also need to have regular communication, by phone, email or video conferences, and you need to make regular trips to your office. Otherwise you really miss out on the social side of work.” Not everyone agrees with Sunjit though. “The only people who can work from home full-time are those who do an unnecessary job.” Fortunately for Sunjit and the 2.1 million like him, not many people think that way! 24. We can infer from Paragraph 1 that _____. A. Sunjit Patel is a well-known designer B. homeworking is generally on the increase C. Sunjit Patel is homeschooling his son D. most designers in London work from home 25. Paragraph 3 is mainly about _____. A. the daily life of homeworkers B. why employees dislike travelling to work C. how employers increase efficiency D. the advantages of homeworking 26. According to Sunjit Patel, people who want to work from home should _____. A. show great self-control B. improve their social life C. have excellent communication skills D. make frequent trips to their workplaces 27. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Most homeworkers do a pointless job. B. People’s opinions on homeworking vary C. Many people are against homeworking. D. Homeworking influences many people’s life. C As an oceanographer (海洋学家), I've spent many years developing robots to explore the ocean, and now we're putting that technology to use in our JASON Project, a program that's designed to inspire students and get them interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. In theaters throughout the country, we bring kids together and send back to them on large screens our live explorations of large areas of the globe. Not only are the kids observers, but they can operate robots moving across the area while broadcasting images back to them. The kids have the sensation (感受) of really being at the site with us. I believe advances in robot technology will one day be the key to a new kind of travel. In the next 10 or 15 years, people will have rooms in their houses that will be able to simulate (模拟) other environments. I like to call these rooms “home domes” — small theaters with screens and advanced equipment that can reproduce the sights, sounds, smells, and feel of a desert, or a forest. Hand in hand with these rooms, I can see a market for travel robots located in countries around the world. You could rent (租) a robot working in a rain forest, then go into your home dome, where you yourself operate the robot's movements. The equipment in the room will receive the sensations in the robot's environment and simulate them for you. Today, much of the world's population never travels more than 50 or 60 miles from home. And even a person with enough time can see only a part of the earth's sights. But this new way of travel will cost so much less in both time and money and allow people to see a lot more of the globe. And simulated travel will also help protect our planet. You can't take large groups of tourists to look at Dian Fossey's gorillas (大猩猩). But a small robot, with no animal smell, can get very close to a gorilla and send the sights, sounds, and smells back to a million people. 28. The main purpose of the JASON Project is to _____. A. design robots B. improve technology C. explore the world D. educate children 29. Without going outside, people in “home domes” can _____. A. get very close to nature B. enjoy a guided trip C. develop and operate robots D. send images back to scientists 30. What's the author's attitude towards the future of robot technology? A. Uncaring. B. Doubtful. C. Hopeful. D. Dissatisfied. 31. According to the text, simulated travel _____. A. has been widely accepted B. is time- and money-saving C. is harmful to the environment D. costs lots of time and money D Many cities and towns have laws that require people to recycle paper and plastics. Now some state and local governments have passed laws that require citizens to recycle their food waste as well. California and Vermont have statewide laws about recycling food waste that apply to businesses and homes. The process of recycling food waste and turning it into usable soil is called composting (堆制肥料). Food waste that can be composted includes fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds, tea bags, and eggshells. Garden waste such as stems and leaves can also be composted. Meat, fish, and dairy food waste cannot be recycled. According to environmental groups, composting reduces the amount of trash going into landfills (垃圾填埋地), and composted waste holds a wide range of nutrients. When compost is added to the soil in gardens and fields, it helps crops grow. Reducing the amount of waste that goes into landfills is one reason why cities and states are passing food-waste recycling laws. “Our landfills are far from enough for the creation of new ones is shrinking.” Renee Crowley, a project manager at the Lower East Side Ecology Center in New York City, told TFK. Officials in Seattle, Washington, say that food waste makes up 30% of the trash going into landfills, and they are looking to reduce that percentage. That city has a law requiring people to recycle food waste. It is banned (禁止) from all garbage. There is a fine for people who put it into regular garbage. Crowley points out that even in cities where food recycling is not a law, there are often places where citizens can drop off their food waste for composting. Many schools and colleges have also started composting programs. Those who are against food-recycling laws say that the composting process is costly. In addition, it can be difficult for people who live in apartments to store their waste because they don’t have access to outside storage bins. Patti Ferguson from Orange County, California, told her local newspaper that she thought an indoor container containing food waste would get smelly. 32. What do we know about composting from the text? A. Not all food waste can be reused. B. It is cheap to compost food waste. C. Not all soil can be composted. D. It is usually processed in empty landfills. 33. What is the third paragraph mainly about? A. Ways of keeping nutrients in the soil. B. Benefits of recycling food waste. C. Examples of different useful nutrients. D. Ways of reducing the amount of trash. 34. In Seattle, throwing food waste into garbage is _____. A. acceptable B. shameful C. illegal D. required 35. Patti Ferguson’s attitude towards food-recycling laws is probably _____. A. thankful B. supportive C. uncaring D. negative 第二节(共 5个小题;每小题 2分,满分 10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两 项为多余项。 Sports for a new generation Introduction We often hear adults complaining that teenagers aren’t active enough and spend all their time sitting in front of computers, but one reason for this might be that teenagers are tired of doing the same sports — we want something a bit more lively.
