Well, Lonely Planet, the world’s largest travel guidebook publisher, releases its top picks for travel destinations every year. Here are some of the winners for 2018. Have a look and maybe they’ll give you some ideas about your next vacation. Canberra, Australia Canberra is not the most famous of Australia’s cities. People think of Sydney and Melbourne before they think of Canberra. Still, Canberra is the country’s capital and political center. And recently, it has become a hit with the word’s travelers. Lonely Planet highlights three attractions that make Canberra a place to consider spending some time in. First, nearby cities like Braddon and NewActon have great vigor. Braddon was once an industrial area; today, it has cafes, shops and restaurants. NewActon has a stunning(极漂亮的)new hotel built entirely of native Australian wood. As you’d expect, these fashionable areas boast many small art galleries that go well with the national museums that are invariably(总是)found in a nation’s capital. Canberra has a full calendar of events for 2018, including folk and wine harvest festivals that will surely bring travelers from both within and outside of Australia. Detroit. US This choice by Lonely Planet is even more surprising than Canberra. For a long time, Detroit was an industrial city. It was a center for car manufacturing(制造业)and therefore a heavily blue collar location. Much of that industry is gone today. But the city is now gaining appeal as a tourist destination for Americans and non-Americans alike. People are attracted to culture, and Detroit certainly has a cultural tradition. Starting from the 1950s, it was a center for African--American pop music. The famous music company Motown was founded in Detroit. Today, the Motown Historical Museum is a must--see for any visitor to the city. The markets, murals, restaurant and sports facilities add to the Detroit vibe(氛围), as does the new streetcar system, which makes it easy to get around. According to Lonely Planet, Detroit is a fine example of the American “comeback” story: It’s had its tough times, but now it’s back in business. Seville, Spain Whereas Canberra and Detroit are new world cities, Seville in Spain is classic old-world. It is a historic city, dominated by a magnificent cathedral and a sprawling(蔓延的)network of medieval streets. Seville was the site of many historical events, all of which are still tangible(可感知的)for today’s visitors. It was once the capital of Moorish Spain. And Seville has its own connection with the new world; Back in the 16th century, trade with colonies in the Americas made it wealthy. Find out more at the Archivo de Indias, which “provides a fascinating insight into Spain’s colonial history”, according to Lonely Planet. But Seville is also a modern city with all the conveniences that the modern traveler expects. Like all Lonely Planet tourist destinations, it boasts cafes, restaurants and art galleries for visitors who have finished absorbing the city’s historical sites. 46. What can we conclude from paragraph two? A. Canberra has become the most popular destination in Australia. B. Braddon is well known for its industrial buildings and shopping malls. C. NewActon features a hotel made of native Australian wood. D. Canberra’s small art galleries appeal to visitors more than national museums. 47. According to the last two paragraphs, ________. A. Seville is a new world city in Spain B. Seville is rich in historical sites C. Detroit tourists are fascinated by its industry D. Detroit tourists are mainly attracted to new streetcar system 48. The purpose of the article is mainly to ________. A. compare top travel destinations B. recommend some lesser--known destinations C. show how industrial and historic cities attract visitors D. inform us of some most popular travel destinations for 2018 B Drones(无人机)are slowly starting to become part of our everyday lives. They used to be just known for helping create the action shots used in online videos and movies, but creative new ways to use drones are being invented all the time. Just take a look at this latest use: A solar--powered “transformer drone” has been developed by scientists from the University of Minnesota. US. Its aim is to make farmers’ work easier by letting them survey their crops from the air. The drone can take off like a helicopter, then change its shape mid-air to fly like a plane. The design means it can take off almost anywhere and hover(悬停)during flight to get a stable view of the land below. Despite its large wingspan of 2.1 meters, the drone weighs just under 4 kilograms. Thanks to solar cells on its wings, it has enough power to fly nonstop during the daytime. It’s designed to be used by farmers to spot plant disease, manage water use and even spray pesticides in the exact place needed, reducing waste. The transformer drone is but a small part of a bigger picture. When asked what a drone looks like, most of us would probably picture a remote--controlled toy, or perhaps a large, unmanned military aircraft. But those images could soon be quite different, as drones are becoming increasingly smaller and cheaper to make. They can now gather in groups of hundreds to fly like a flock of birds. Known as swarms(集群), they’re seen as the next step forward in the drone industry. Swarms are clever. There is no leader in a swarm because it is a self-organizing system in which each drone is equal. This allows each drone in a swarm to search an area efficiently, or for the whole swarm, to fly together without colliding(碰撞)with one another. And only one operator is needed to control the whole swarm. Swarms are also tough. One missile(导弹)can bring down an aircraft, but a swarm can lose dozens of members and keep going. In fact, we have already had the luck of seeing swarms of drones in real life. In February, 300 drones made by US tech company Intel formed a swarm in the shape of the American flag during Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl halftime show, lighting up the night sky. And Chinese company EHang recently used 1,000 drones to display a map of China and the Chinese character for “blessings”. In the long term, as researchers at Harvard’s Wyss Institute predict, small swarming drones might become as much a part of our environment as insects. Their RoboBee project is developing tiny drones smaller than a paper clip to collect weather data. So maybe in the next few years, our skies will be filled with thousands of drone swarms. 49. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article? A. Transformer drone was designed to help farmers predict local weather. B. Transformer drone can fly all year around without stopping. C. Transformer drone can check on plants from the middle of the air. D. Transformer drone is very tiny and works in large groups. 50. We can conclude from the article that drone swarms ________. A. are mainly used as military aircraft B. work well thanks to the teamwork of many operators C. have an advantage because of their self-organization D. are efficient with a smart and powerful leader in a swarm 51. We can learn from the last three paragraphs that ________. A. Lady Gaga was the first person to have used drones in a performance B. the RoboBee project is based on our understanding of birds’ flying patterns C. the large number of drones has become a threat to our environment D. the spread of drones will benefit human beings in various ways C Maddie Hoffman is battling against epidemolytic ichthyosis her skin can grow up to ten times faster than normal, peels(剥落)and becomes so dry that she can’t move. Each day she undergoes a two-hour routine to remove dead skin cells and protect her from catching a life threatening infection. Her mother, Emily, was told that her daughter may not survive after she was born. She wasn’t allowed to hold her daughter until she was seven days old in an isolation room and she had to wear gloves and a mask. She said, “It was visible at birth that she had ichthyosis and shortly after that all the layers of skin fell off in sheets. She was bright red and looked like a burn victim. The nurse told us, ‘You realize your baby may not survive?’ It was very scary.” Her mother’s concern Emily added, “she has one of the most severe forms of the condition, requiring aggressive and painful treatment administered for up to three hours every day. The build-up of scaling is her worst enemy. The more it layers up the more likely she is to have skin infections. As each hour goes by, her skin gets harder for her to move; she gets drier and starts to flake--off. There are days when she can hardly move. The most affected part is her feet. Any friction causes blistering (起泡), and even socks and shoes affect her. We have a daily battle with her blisters and her not being able to work tirelessly to stop them from getting infected.” Bullied at school Emily said, “Bullying is a big deal for her. She goes through a lot of stares and teasing. Kids get nervous seeing her skin shedding and bully her about her smell caused by the skin build-up. Seeing people stare at her and look with disgust, as a mother, I feel heartbroken. That is why we try to speak out. Maddie wants to help children in general to stay motivated and positive. We try to teach others that it’s okay to be different. So in spite of everything Maddie is going through, she is an extremely happy and optimistic girl who loves to help others and is determined to raise awareness.” Dreams for the future Maddie, who is a Make-A-Wish kid, as dreams of dancing with Ellen DeGeneres to raise awareness of her condition. Unfortunately, Emily, a single mother, and Maddie, a suffering girl, have been rejected disability said financially. Emily said, “It’s very hard for us without a lot of support for her condition. Ichthyosis is very financially draining. But we choose to stay as positive as possible and take each day as it comes, in the hope one day it will be cured.” 52. It is a source of deep contentment. The Swiss get genuine joy from the fact that life unfolds on time and they define happiness as life in a fairly punctual manner. Whenever I visit Switzerland, I go through several stages of punctuality reaction. At first it delights me, especially if I’m coming from neighbouring Italy or France with their rather more flexible approach to timekeeping. By contrast, life in Switzerland is dependable, like a Saint Bernard dog. For instance, when someone’s ordered a new refrigerator, the company gives a precise two-hour window for delivery. If someone says they will meet me at 2 pm. they arrive at 2 pm not 2:05 (or 1:55, for that matter). I like this. For a while. Then it annoys me. The extreme punctuality strikes me as a kind of a lack of generosity, and I find myself agreeing with the English writer Evelyn Waugh who said that “punctuality is the virtue of the bored.” That is unfair though, and finally, I come to appreciate Swiss punctuality for what it is; a deep expressing of respect for other people. A punctual person is a considerate one. By showing up on time—for everything—a Swiss person is saying, in effect, “I value your time and, by extension, I value you.” Punctuality is not without its drawbacks. For one thing, it creates a kind of bunching effect (群聚效应). Coffee shops in Swiss cities tend to be crowded at 4 p.m. every day because everybody takes their coffee break? at exactly 4 p.m. In apartment buildings, residents must follow a strict weekday schedule for use of the laundry rooms. Extreme punctuality also creates an expectation, and if that expectation is not met, disappointment comes. On those rare occasions that things do not function smoothly, the Swiss get angry. How to explain this punctuality? No one knows for sure. But a popular theory is that, historically, it arises from the tough, mountainous terrain(地形). Either you planted your crops on time and harvested them promptly or, well, you starved. Punctuality, sadly, is a dying art in many parts of the world. Mobile phones are partly to blame. We feel less pressed to arrive on time if we can always text to say we’re running a few minutes late. I don’t sense that is happening in Switzerland, though. It is no coincidence that the Swiss are the world’s watchmakers. Which came first—the precise timekeepers or the precise people? Hard to say, but the result is the same; a nation where the trains—and everything else really do run on time. Title: The nation that hates to be late Introduction The Swiss get genuine joy and feel (56) ________ deeply from a life in a punctual manner Stage of the author’s reaction to this punctuality feeling delighted In contrast to Italy or France, life in Switzerland is dependable and things are done at the exact time as planned. feeling (57) ________ The writer thinks being extremely punctual (58) ________ generosity and is boring. appreciating Punctuality shows respect and (59) ________ for other people. The company also updates its system so that parents can monitor children playing its games. Addiction to internet games has a great effect on youngsters in many ways. First, youngsters lack self-control so they sometimes spend too much time on games, which results in their poor performance in school and bad health. Second, playing games is a waste of money and some youngsters even do something illegal to get money for playing games. What’s more, internet addiction may affect their mental health as well, such as withdrawing from society. So it’s necessary to have control over youngsters’ playing internet games. Personally, our government should make laws to control game developers and youngsters. Besides, parents should spare more time to give their children more useful guidance. And youngsters should learn to manage time and live a meaningful life. (150 words) 查看更多
