While the leader in business or industry or the college professor occupies a higher social position and commands greater respect in the community than the common laborer or even the skilled factory worker, he may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or laborer of some sort. This attitude toward manual (体力的) labor is now still seen in many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at a home that is not only comfortably but even luxuriously (豪华地) furnished and in which there is every evidence of the fact that the family has been able to afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children; yet the hostess probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and will wash dishes afterward, furthermore the dinner will not consist merely of something quickly and easily assembled from contents of various cans and a cake or a pie bought at the near- by bakery. On the contrary, the hostess usually takes pride in careful preparation of special dishes. A professional man may talk about washing the car, digging in his flowerbeds, painting the house. His wife may even help with these things, just as he often helps her with the dishwashing. The son who is away at college may wait on table and wash dishes for his living, or during the summer he may work with a construction gang on a highway in order to pay for his education. 21.From Paragraph 1 , we can know that in America A. people tend to have a high opinion of the self--made man B. people can always rise to the top through their own efforts C. college professors win great respect from common workers D. people feel painful to mention their fathers as laborers 22.According to the passage, the hostess cooks dinner herself mainly because A. servants in America are hard to get B. she takes pride in what she can do herself C. she can hardly afford servants D. it is easy to prepare a meal with canned food 23.The expression "wait on table" in the second paragraph means A. work in a furniture shop B. keep accounts for a bar C. wait to lay the table D. serve customers in a restaurant 24.Which of the following may serve as the best title of the passage? A. A Respectable Self--made Family B. American Attitude toward Manual Labor C. Characteristics of American Culture D. The Development of Manual Labor B Why is pink or purple a color for girls and blue or brown for boys? The answer depends largely on cultural values as well as personal experiences. To the Egyptians, green was a color that represented the hope and joy of spring, while for Muslims,it means heaven.Red is a symbol of good luck in many cultures. In China, children are given money in a red envelope to bring good fortune in the New Year. For many nations, blue is a symbol of protection and religious beliefs.Greek people often wear a blue necklace hoping to protect themselves against evils. People's choice of colors is also influenced by their bodies' reactions toward them.Green is said to be the most restful color. It has the ability to reduce pain and relax people both mentally and physically.People who work in green environment have been found to have fewer stomach aches. Red can cause a person's blood pressure to rise and increase people's appetites. Many decorators will include different shades of red in the restaurant.Similarly, many commercial websites will have a red "Buy Now" button because red is a color that easily catches a person's eye. Blue is another calming color.Unlike red, blue can cause people to lose appetite. So if you want to eat less, some suggest that eating from blue plates can help. The next time you are deciding on what to wear or what color to decorate your room, think about the color carefully. 25.Muslims regard green as a symbol of heaven mainly because of their . A. cultural values B. commercial purposes C. personal experiences D. physical reactions to the color 26.Why will many commercial websites have a red "Buy Now" button? A. To relax people physically. B. To increase people's appetites. C. To encourage people to make a purchase. D. To cause a person's blood pressure to rise. 27.Which of the following would be the most proper title for the text? A. Colors and Human Beings B. The Cultural Meaning of Color C. Colors and Personal Experiences D. The Meaning and Function of Color C The extraordinary Eastgate Building in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital city, is said to be the only one in the world to use the same cooling and heating principles as the termite mound (白蚁堆). Architect Mick Pearce used precisely the same strategy when designing the Eastgate Building , which has no air conditioning and almost no heating. The building is the country’s largest commercial and shopping complex but uses less than 10% of the energy of a conventional building of its size. The Eastgate’s owners saved 3.5 million on a 36 million building because air conditioning didn’t have to be equipped. The complex is actually two buildings linked by bridges across a shady, glassroofed atrium (天井) open to the air. Fans suck fresh air in from the atrium, blow it upstairs through hollow spaces under the floors and from there into each office through vents (通风口). As it rises and warms, it is drawn out via ceiling vents and finally exists through fortyeight brick chimneys. During summer’s cool nights, big fans blow air through the building seven times an hour to cool the empty floors. By day, smaller fans blow two changes of air an hour through the building to circulate the air which has been in contact with the cool floors. For winter days, there are small heaters in the vents. This is all possible only because Harare is 1,600 feet above sea level, and has cloudless skies, little dampness and rapid temperature swings-days as warm as 31 °C commonly drop to 14°C at night. “You couldn’t do this in New York, with its fantastically hot summers and fantastically cold winters,” Pearce said. The engineering firm of Ove Arup & Partners monitors daily temperatures. It is found that the temperature of the building has generally stayed between 23 °C and 25 °C, with the exception of the annual hot period just before the summer rains in October and three days in November, when a doorkeeper accidentally switched off the fans at night. And the air is far fresher than in airconditioned buildings, where up to 30% of the air is recycled. 28.Why was Eastgate cheaper to be built than a conventional building? A. It was designed in a smaller size. B. No air conditioners were fixed in. C. Its heating system was less advanced. D. It used rather different building materials. 29.What does the underlined word “it” refer to in Paragraph 3? A. Fresh air from outside. B. Heat in the building. C. A hollow space. D. A baseboard vent. 30.Why would a building like Eastgate not work efficiently in New York? A. New York has less clear skies as Harare. B. Its dampness affects the circulation of air. C. New York covers a larger area than Harare. D. Its temperature changes seasonally rather than daily. 31.The data in the last paragraph suggests Eastgate’s temperature control system . A. allows a wide range of temperatures B. functions well for most of the year C. can recycle up to 30% of the air D. works better in hot seasons D How can you help kids cope with(应对) stress? Proper rest and good nutrition can boost coping skills, as can good parenting. Make time for your kids each day. Whether they need to talk or just be in the same room with you, make yourself available. Even as kids get older, quality time is important. It’s really hard for some people to come home after work, get down on the floor, and play with their kids or just talk to them about their day--especially if they've had a stressful day themselves. But expressing interest in your kids shows that they’re important to you. Help your children cope with stress by talking about what may be causing it. Together, you can come up with a few solutions. For example, they should cut back on after-school activities, spending more time talking with parents or teachers, developing an exercise plan or keeping a journal. You can also help by predicting stressful situations and preparing kids for them. For example, let a child know ahead of time ( but not too far ahead of time) that a doctor’s appointment is coming up and talk about what will happen there. Keep in mind, though, that younger kids probably won't need too much advance preparation. Too much information can cause more stress. Remember that some level of stress is normal; let kids know that it’s okay to feel angry, scared, lonely, or anxious and that other people share those feelings. When kids can’t or won’t discuss these issues, try talking about your own concerns. This shows that you’re willing to handle tough topics and are available to talk with them when they’re ready. If a child shows symptoms that concern you and is unwilling to talk, consult a counselor or other mental health experts. Most parents have the skills to deal with their kids’ stress. The time to seek professional attention is when any change in behavior persists, when stress is causing serious anxiety on when the behavior is causing significant problems in functioning at school or at home. 32.What is the purpose of the text? A. To share the author' s ideas on proper parenting. B. To persuade parents to spend more time with kids. C. To advise parents how to help kids deal with stress. D. To seek different ways to help solve kids' problems. 33.What makes it difficult for parents to spare kids quality time? A. Kids growing so fast. B. Parents being tired out. C. Kids losing interest in parents. D. There being too much homework. 34.You are advised not to talk too much about a stressful situation in advance because . A. it does no good to your kids B. it doesn’t work in practice C. your kids may lose interest D. your kids don’t want to listen 35.What can we learn from Paragraph 5 ? A. Normal people share the same feelings. B. It is normal for kids to have some stress. C. Kids should get rid of negative feelings. D. Everybody feels angry, scared, lonely or anxious. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Crossroads International How does crossroads work? Crosswords is a resource network. They send us a list of their needs and we try to match it with the resource we have in stock. 38. Crossroads itself also operates on a low budget. We do not buy the goods we send. They are donated. Dear headmaster, I’m writing to request you to allow us to surf the Internet in the computer classroom. Right now, we can’t use the computer in the compute classroom, which makes us very upset because we can’t search for the information we need or read news about what is happening at home or abroad. As far as I’m concerned, using the Internet is very necessary. Surfing the Internet can benefit us in many ways. First of all, we can search for solutions to some problems that we come across in our studies. Second, it is necessary for us to learn about the latest news. More importantly, we are no longer children now, so we can able to control our behaviour. Therefore, the teachers needn’t be worried about us. I do hope you can take my suggestions into consideration and make a final decision.查看更多
