A “ I Went Skydiving at 84!” As a young girl growing up in the 1930s, I always wanted to fly a plane, but back then it was almost unheard of a woman to do that. I got a taste of that dream in 2011,when my husband arranged for me me ride in a hot air balloon for my birthday. But the experience turned out to be very dull. Around that time ,I told my husband that I wanted to skydive. So when our retirement community(社区)announced that they were having an essay competition and the topic was an experience of a lifetime that you wanted to have, I decided to write about my dream. In the essay, I wrote about my desire to skydive, stating George Brush Sr. did it at age 80.Why not me? I was just 84 and in pretty good health. A year went by and I heard nothing. But then at a community party in late April 2009, they announced that I was one of the winners. I just couldn’ t believe it. Inspired by this, I decided to realize my dream, even though some of my family members and my doctor were against it. One June 11, 2009, nearly 40 of my family and friends gathered in the area close to where I would land while I headed up in the airplane. My instructor, Jay, guided me through the experience. The plane was the noisiest one I had ever been in, but I wasn’t frightened—I was really just looking forward to the experience. When we reached 13,000 feet, Jay instructed me to throw myself out of the plane. When we first hit the air, the wind was so strong that I could hardly breathe. For a second I thought, “What have I gotten myself into?” But then everything got calmer. We were in a free fall for about a minute before Jay opened the parachute(降落伞), then we just floated downward for about five minutes. Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I have ever felt—much better than the hot air balloon. I was just enjoying it. Skydiving was really one of the greatest experiences of my life. I hope other people will look at me and realize that you don’ t stop living just because you are 84 years old. If there’ s something you want to experience, look into it. If it’ s something that is possible, make it happen. 1. What happened to the author in 2011? A. She flew an airplane. B. Tuesday's Daily News said 29-year Julien Duret from France is the man who left the spot quickly after the rescue last Saturday. He lifted the little girl out of the water after she fell off the bank at the South Street Seaport museum. He handed the girl to her father, David Anderson, who had dived in after him. “ I didn't think at all,” Duret told the Daily News. “ It happened very fast. I reacted very fast.” Duret, an engineer on vacation, was walking with his girlfriend along the pier (码头) when he saw something falling into the water. He thought it was a doll, but realized it was a child when he approached the river. In an instant, he took off his coat and jumped into the water. When he reached the girl, she appeared lifeless, he said. Fortunately, when she was out of the water, she opened her eyes. Anderson said his daughter slipped off the bank when he was adjusting his camera. An ambulance came later for her, said Duret, who was handed dry clothes from onlookers. Duret caught a train with his girlfriend shortly after. The rescue happened on the day before he left for France. Duret said he didn't realize his tale of heroism had greatly moved New York until he was leaving the city the next morning. "I don't really think I'm a hero," said Duret. "Anyone would do the same ting." 5. Why was Duret in New York? A. To meet his girlfriend. B. To work as an engineer. C. To spend his holiday. D. To visit the Andersons. 6. What did Duret do shortly after the ambulance came? A. He was interviewed by a newspaper B. He asked his girlfriend for his dry clothes C. He went to the hospital in the ambulance D. He disappeared from the spot quickly 7. Who dived after Duret into the river to save the little girl? A. David Anderson B. A passer-by C. His girlfriend D. A taxi driver. 8. When was Duret most probably found to be the very hero? A. The day when he was leaving for home. B. A couple of days after the girl was rescued. C. The first day when he was in New York. D. The same day when he was interviewed. C For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner. Like a border conflict between neighboring countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I control and what you do? Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for starting it. From the parents' point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents' complete unreasonableness. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except oppositely. Both feel trapped. In this article, I'll describe three no-win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no-win situation is quarrels over unimportant things. Examples include the color of the teen's hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the child's failure to eat a good breakfast before school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends. Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong. Third, needing to be right. It doesn't matter what the topic is—politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg—the point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority—someone who actually knows something—and therefore to command respect. Unfortunately, as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they know more than the other, they'll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress. 9. Why does the author compare the parent-teen war to a border conflict? A. Both can continue for generations. B. Both are about where to draw the line. C. Neither has any clear winner. D. Neither can be put to an end. 10. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean? A. The teens blame their parents for starting the conflict. B. The teens agree with their parents on the cause of the conflict. C. The teens accuse their parents of misleading them. D. The teens tend to have a full understanding of their parents. 11. Parents and teens want to be right because they want to _____. A. give orders to the other B. know more than the other C. gain respect from the other D. get the other to behave properly 12. What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows? A. Causes for the parent-teen conflicts. B. Examples of the parent-teen war. C. Solutions for the parent-teen problems. D. Future of the parent-teen relationship. D Modern inventions have speeded up people's lives amazingly. Motor-cars cover a hundred miles in little more than an hour, aircraft cross the world inside a day, while computers operate at lightning speed. Indeed, this love of speed seems never-ending. Every year motor-cars are produced which go even faster and each new computer boasts (吹嘘) of saving precious seconds in handling tasks. All this saves time, but at a price. When we lose or gain half a day in speeding across the world in an airplane, our bodies tell us so. We get the uncomfortable feeling known as jet-lag; our bodies feel that they have been left behind in another time zone. Again, spending too long at computer results in painful wrists and fingers. Mobile phones also have their dangers, according to some scientists; too much use may transmit harmful radiation into our brains, a consequence we do not like to think about. However, what do we do with the time we have saved? Certainly not relax, or so it seems. We are so accustomed to constant activity that we find it difficult to sit and do nothing, or even just one thing at a time. Perhaps the days are long gone when we might listen quietly to a story on the radio, letting imagination take us into another world. There was a time when some people's lives were devoted simply to the cultivation of the land or the care of cattle. No multi-tasking there; their lives went on at a much gentler pace, and in a familiar pattern. There is much that we might envy about a way of life like this. Yet before we do so, we must think of the hard tasks our ancestors faced: they farmed with bare hands, often lived close to hunger, and had to fashion tools from wood and stone. Modern machinery has freed people from that primitive existence. 13. The new products become more and more time-saving because _____. A. our love of speed seems never-ending B. time is limited C. the prices are increasingly high D. the manufacturers boast a lot 14. What is the author's attitude towards the modern technology? A. Critical. B. Objective. C. Optimistic. D. Negative. 15. What does the passage mainly discuss? A. The present and past times. B. Machinery and human beings. C. Imaginations and inventions. D. Modern technology and its influence. . 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Many people find they consistently lack energy and always feel tired. I’m writing to tell you something about a meaningful volunteer activity that I participated in last week. To make riding the subway in Beijing a pleasant and comfortable experience for passengers, the students of our class decided to do something to make a difference. Last Friday, we gathered at the station near our school in the afternoon and began doing different jobs. Some of us remained on the platform, calling on passengers to help keep the surroundings clean. Others, meanwhile, entered each car to pick up litter on the floor and seats. Tired as we were, everyone felt a sense of achievement upon seeing the tidy subway cars. Through this activity, I have realized that with every individual doing their part, we will create a better world. Have you had a similar experience? Just let me know. Sincerely, Li Hua Possible version 2 Dear Jeff, How is everything going? I’m writing to tell you something about our pleasant spring outing last week. To release ourselves from tense study, our class organized a trip to Fragrant Hill last Saturday. We gathered at the east gate at 8 in the morning, and then the fun began. We started with an exciting climbing contest. The first ten students to reach the top would receive a “mystery prize”. Everyone was eager to participate in the contest. Believe it or not, I came in second place and received a set of Fragrant Hill postcards! On top of the hill, we also had a great time playing hide and seek, our favorite childhood game. With gentle breeze and warm sunshine embracing us, everyone was happy and relaxed. Through this activity, not only did I enjoy the beauty of nature but I also realized the importance of taking the time to relax from busy study.
