On a visit to Paris in October, Stem outlined his vision for the future, which is likely to see more European countries hosting NBA games by 2015.‎ The NBA is now intending to make China its market center. “Our experience in China has been that it is going to be explosive in its growth,” said Stem, The strategy in China is television. “We’ve made 14 deals in China with local and national networks on cable and satellite,” The success of Chinese centre Yao Ming has paved the way for the NBA marketing blitz in China. The NBA, which is broadcasted in more than 200 countries in 42 languages, will put that to the test in October 2004 when the Houston Rockets play two pre-season games against the Sacramento Kings in Beijing and Shanghai. The NBA knows that it needs a global market to compensate for tough times on home soil. ‎ ‎ “It makes no difference where the players come from, all the NBA teams know they have to scout(物色球员)internationally. ” said Terry Lyons, the NBA’s vice-president of international public relations.“it has increased the level of competition here.” As Frenchman Tony Parker and Argentine Emanuel Ginobili showed in wining ‎ championship rings with the San Antonio Spurs last season, many people can earn the respect of their American peers. I have heard it said that even people who work in television treat studio audience with scorn-- or, as one cameraman put it, ‎ ‎“ like cattle”.‎ I had assumed that studios were made up of silly people desperate for two seconds of fame . But there’s no such things as a typical studio audience. They come from all classes, professions and income groups. Television tries to attract different types of people for different types of programs.‎ Those of us who prefer to watch television from home can’t see why anyone would want to watch television from a studio. Why would anyone bother to apply for tickets, travel for long distances, and suffer hours of boredom oi the uncomfortableness of a studio just to watch what they can see at home?‎ One theory is that people hope that for a second they might appear on television. I didn’t believe this until I spoke to Angela. Why had she come? “ It was a chance to appear on television.” Another theory is that people are curious to take a look behind the scenes. But the most common explanation I heard was simply a case of “ a friend gave the ticket.”‎ Few of us have sat in as studio audiences, yet we think we can imagine what it is like. You sit there, jammed among strangers, while someone flashes cards with APPLAUD or LAUGH on them--- and you clap or laugh accordingly. This may reflect the reality of some television, but not all by any means. As one studio manager puts it, “ we always assume a show will be good enough not to need these signs.”‎ But is there any real difference between what you experience in a studio and what you see on your television at home? For Claire, sitting in a studio is “ more exciting”, while Charlotte likes the feeling of involvement with the live television. “ Last year I saw my favorite actor. When you see him on television at home you miss out a lot.”‎ ‎ 1. He wants to show his feeling of involvement to them.‎ D. He wants TV viewers to believe that the program is excellent.‎ ‎ 4. Which of the following is NOT the reason for people to become studio audiences?‎ ‎ A. They want to see themselves on TV.‎ ‎ B. They would like to know what it is like in a studio.‎ KEYS: ADDB ‎(B)‎ In the world of entertainment, TV talk shows have undoubtedly flooded every inch of space on daytime television. And anyone who watches them regularly knows that each one varies in style and format. But no two shows ‎ are more profoundly opposite in content, while at the same time standing out above the rest, than the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey shows. ‎ ‎ Jerry Springer could easily be considered the king of "trash talk(废话)". The topics on his show are as shocking as shocking can be. For example, the show takes the ever - common talk show themes of love, sex, cheating, guilt, hate, conflict and morality to a different level. Clearly, the Jerry Springer show is a display and exploitation of society's moral catastrophes, yet people are willing to eat up the intriguing predicaments of other people's lives. ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Like Jerry Springer, Oprah Winfrey takes TV talk show to its extreme, but Oprah goes in the opposite direction. The show focuses on the improvement of society and an individual's quality of life. Topics range from teaching your children responsibility, managing your work weekly, to getting to know your neighbors.‎ ‎ Compared to Oprah, the Jerry Springer show looks like poisonous waste being dumped on society. Jerry ends every show with a "final word". He makes a small speech that sums up the entire moral of the show. Hopefully, this is the part where most people will learn something very valuable. ‎ ‎ Clean as it is, the Oprah show is not for everyone. The show's main target audience are middle - class Americans. Most of these people have the time. money, and stability to deal with life's tougher problems. Jerry Springer, on the other hand, has more of an association with the young adults of society. These are 18 - to 21 - year - olds whose main troubles in life involve love, relationship, sex, money and peers. They are the ones who see some value and lessons to be learned underneath the show's exploitation.‎ While the two shows are as different as night and day. both have ruled the talk show circuit for many years now. Each one caters to a different audience while both have a strong following from large groups of fans. Ironically, both could also be considered pioneers in the talk show world.‎ ‎1.Compared with other TV talk shows, both the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey are______.‎ A) more family - oriented ‎ B) unusually popular C) more profound D) relatively formal ‎2.Though the social problems Jerry Springer talks about appear distasteful, the audience______.‎ A) remain fascinated by them ‎ B) are ready to face up to them ‎ C) remain indifferent to them ‎ D) are willing to get involved in them ‎ ‎3.Which of the following is likely to be a topic of the Oprah Winfrey show? ‎ A) A new type of robot. ‎ B) Racist hatred. ‎ C) Family budget planning. ‎ D) Street violence. ‎ ‎4.Despite their different approaches, the two talk shows are both________. ‎ A) ironical ‎ B) sensitive ‎ C) instructive ‎ D) cynical ‎ ‎5.We can learn from the passage that the two talk shows_______. ‎ A) have monopolized the talk show circuit ‎ B) exploit the weaknesses in human nature ‎ C) appear at different times of the day ‎ D) are targeted at different audiences KEYS: BACCD III. B 语法题must have表示肯定的推测;will have “将会拥有(将来时表 达法)” ;could have “可以有” ;do have表示强调。故选B。‎ ‎ 3. ‎ ‎ 6. A 习惯用法题score the goal “进球”。‎ ‎ 7. B 习惯用法题a series “一系列” ;in a row “一个接一个地,连续不断 地” ;at a time “一次” ;in a sense “从某种程度上说”。‎ ‎ 8. ‎ ‎ 9. A 习惯用法题能与下文off搭配的词唯有show, show off “展现,炫 耀”。‎ ‎ 10. ‎ ‎ 12. A 习惯用法及上下文题a victory over sb. “战胜……”。上文出现过"a 3-2 win over Deportivo La Coruna ‎ on March 1."‎ ‎ 13. (1) While I admit his good points, I can see his shortcomings. (2) While I like the color of the hat, I don't like its shape. (3) Although my car is very old, it still runs very well. (4) He brought me a cup of coffee although I had asked for tea. ‎ ‎ 17.
