Food And Your Health B Samanta Schweblin, one of the best young Spanish language novelists nominated (提名) by British literary magazine Granta, has visited Beijing to promote the first Chinese edition of a collection of her short stories. The collection, Birds in the Mouth, has been translated and published by Shanghai-based publisher Reader99. “Sometimes I hold the Chinese edition and choose a story at random and try to guess which one it is. But it is almost impossible for me; even the length is different.” says Schweblin. “When a book is translated into a Western language, I can at least understand some parts of my stories, and therefore suffer some doubt about the quality of the translation. But my Chinese edition is more like an act of faith.” Born in Argentina in 1978, Schweblin says she is influenced by the literary traditions of the La Plata area, home to many famous Latin-American novelists. Interested in writing stories of ordinary lives where suddenly something extraordinary happens, something new, strange or unknown, she thinks, “The stranger and the unknown are not always related to ghosts or aliens, but can be something related to the known world, something that actually could happen.” Birds in the Mouth tells of a divorced father who worries about his 13-year-old daughter and her mysterious appetites. It turns out that his daughter eats live birds. The idea for this story came to Schweblin when she was browsing the Internet, “Click, click, click, a picture of a little girl who looks frightened with her hands covering her mouth came to my eyes. Little by little, I developed the story in my mind, and then wrote it down” recalls Schweblin. Although there are elements of violence and bloodiness in Schweblin's stories, she skillfully hides them, thinking the trick to writing a thrilling story is to stop the monster from appearing, while maintaining a frightening and mysterious atmosphere. 25. Samanta Schweblin came to China to ______. A. pay a visit to Beijing B. translate her stories into Chinese C. help to make her book more popular D. publish her collection 26. When mentioning her Chinese edition, Schweblin thinks ______ . A. she suffers some doubt about the quality of the translation B. her Chinese edition is slightly different from the original one C. she can understand some parts of her Chinese edition D. she has a strong belief in her Chinese edition 27. From the passage we can tell, the author ______. A. has an appetite for writing something extraordinary B. got the idea of her story Birds in the Mouth by design C. tried to quit describing violent and bloody scenes in her story D. thinks her writing style is mainly affected by some famous native novelists 28. But according to new research, humans are becoming like goldfish. Our attention span (时长) is getting shorter ... and it’s all because of technology. “We move quickly from one site to another on the web,” says Doctor Ted Selker, a computer scientist from Massachusetts, “and we are losing the ability to concentrate.” With millions of websites to choose from, the attention span of the average internet user is just seconds. There are other digital distractions (分心) too: email, instant messaging and quickie movies on websites. Some people are worried about the effect on young people. “You need time to understand and think about what you read,” says Julia Wood, from London.“Young people search the net all the time and their brains become full of useless information but there is no time to make sense of it. I am trying to persuade my pupils to read more books, so that they concentrate on one subject for longer.” Other teachers are trying more unusual methods to improve students’ concentration. Anne Savan, from Wales, was so worried about her students that she started playing Mozart during her science lessons. She says that it had an amazing effect: “The music made them calmer, and their concentration was much better.” But not everyone believes that there is a problem. Ray Cole, an educational psychologist says: “On web, young people learn to make quick decisions about what is and isn’t worth reading. They might look at five unhelpful websites very quickly, before stopping and reading a sixth useful website more carefully. In a world with so much information available, this is an important skill.” 32 Why does the writer mention“goldfish”? A. To analyze data. B. To introduce a topic. C. To settle problems. D. To suggest a way out. 33. What may cause a shorter attention span according to Dr. Ted Selker? A. Skipping around the internet. B. Time to digest information. C. Traditional methods of reading. D. Making decisions. 34. What will help students overcome a short attention span? A. Receiving emails. B. Texting messages. C. Reading more books. D. Watching quickie movies. 35. What is Ray Cole’s attitude towards looking through websites quickly? A. Cautious. B. Unfavorable. C. Skeptical. D. Supportive. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Father’s Day has been celebrated for over 100 years. It’s also an event celebrated in many countries around the world, although at different times of the year. Make this Father’s Day the best by giving your dad a day that shows him just how special he is to you. 36 How you celebrate Father’s Day will largely come down to knowing what your dad likes and what will make the day most enjoyable. That can mean planning a grand adventure, or simply taking care of all the chores (日常琐事) around the house so dad can relax. Get others involved. If you have brothers or sisters, you could get them involved in planning something nice for your dad. 37 If you don’t have any siblings, you could also ask your mom or grandparents to help you. Wish him a happy father’s day. 38 When you see him in the morning give him a yell, “Happy Father’s Day, Dad!” in a loud, happy voice. 39 Gifts are great, but showing your love, and reassuring your dad that you’re proud of him and all he’s done for you can be the most important factor in celebrating a fantastic Father’s Day. Talk with your dad. Tell him about some things going on in school you haven’t told him; tell him about things that are going on in your life. Don’t make it all about you! 40 A. Think of a creative gift. B. Tell your dad that you appreciate him. C. Think about what makes your dad happy. D. Your dad may take no interest in what you talk about. E. This may seem obvious, but don’t forget to acknowledge that it is his day. F. Ask your dad about how he is doing, or ask him to tell you about his life growing up. G. Having all of his kids celebrate father’s day with him will make it even more special. 第三部分 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑.
