阅读理解 A (2019·湖州检测)In 2009, Dan Black was hit by a car in his hometown of Chepstow, Wales, as he was biking to his job at a grocery store. The accident left him unable to move from the chest down. During his recovery, he suffered a stroke that made his right arm useless. Once a promising guitarist, Dan, now 25, lives with his parents and requires aroundtheclock care that costs nearly $300,000 a year. After the accident, a friend of him started the Help Dan Black Fund(基金) to cover some of Dan’s medical expenses. Dan learned about an experimental stem cell(干细胞) treatment in China that could enable him to walk again. After four years, donations to help Dan Black totaled nearly $30,000. One day, in 2013, a news story caught the eye of Dan’s mother, Michacla, who then shared the story with her son. The story featured a fiveyearold boy named Brecon Vaughan. He had a rare form of disease and never walked by himself. The boy’s family had created a website with which to raise nearly $100,000 needed for a trip to the St.Louis Children’s Hospital, where treatment was offered that could help Brecon walk. Only half the amount had been raised, said the report. Dan deliberated. Then, after considering that his own dream of walking could be years away, he donated his $30,000 to Brecon’s cause. “I know how it feels to walk. Brecon doesn’t. He needs it much more than I do,” Dan told a newspaper. Dan’s generosity received a great deal of attention, and contributions started pouring in to the Vaughan website. The family soon exceeded their fundraising goal. They’ve promised to give the extra funds, about $17,000, to the Tree of Hope charity, which helps sick children in the United Kingdom find specialized medical help. In October, Brecon and his family traveled to St. Louis to begin treatment. “What Dan did is great,” Brecon’s mother said. “It is an extraordinary gift.” 1.What do we know about Dan Black? A.He promised to be a guitarist. B.He lost his right arm in an accident. C.He created a website to collect money. D.He donated his money from his need. 2.What does the underlined word “exceeded” in the last paragraph mean? A.Went beyond. B.Brought up. C.Achieved. D.Set. 3.What helped the donation flood into the Vaughan website? A.Michacla’s suggestion. B.Brecon’s story. C.Dan Black’s example. D.The Vaughans’ promise. 4.How will Vaughan’s family deal with the extra funds? A.Support Dan Black’s treatment. B.Give away to the Tree of Hope charity. C.Help sick children in the U.K. D.Fund Brecon’s trip to St. Louis. B Slowly but surely, we’re moving closer and closer to 5G world. From smart home security to selfdriving cars, all the internetconnected devices in our life will be able to talk to each other at lightningfast speeds with reduced delay. Objectively speaking, the fastest 4G download speeds in the U.S. top out at an average of 19.42 Mbps. But by comparison 5G promises gigabit(千兆) speeds. “5G is one of those heralds(预兆), along with artificial intelligence, of this coming data age,” said Steve Koenig, vice president of market research for the Consumer Technology Association. “The selfdriving vehicle is a great emblem of this data age, and that is to say, it is a sign of time, because with one single task, driving, you have massive amounts of data coming from the vehicle itself, and a variety of sensors are collecting a lot of information to model its environment as it moves. It’s pulling in data from other vehicles about road conditions down the lanes. It could be weather information, or connected infrastructure(基础设施) construction. There’s lots of data behind that task, which is why we need the capacity and high speed.” And virtual reality glasses and headsets haven’t yet become the mainstream, but tech companies are joyfully betting that these devices will eventually replace our smartphones. With 5G, that could actually happen. This is notable because companies such as Apple are reportedly developing AR glasses to assist—or even replace—smartphones. Ericsson stated at February’s Mobile World Congress how smart glasses could become faster and lighter with a 5G connection, because instead of being weighed down with components, the glasses could rely on hardware for processing power. But don’t get too excited. There’s still a lot of work to be done in the meantime, including various trials to make sure the radios play nicely with hardware and infrastructure construction, so 5G isn’t concentrated only in big cities. 5.What is the first paragraph mainly about? A.The coming world of 5G. B.The tight security of 5G. C.The super speed of 5G. D.A potential dream of 5G. 6.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “emblem” in paragraph 2? A.Exhibition. B.Success. C.Symbol. D.Explanation. 7.What can we learn from paragraph 3? A.5G world will no longer work effectively without the virtual reality devices. B.Apple and other companies are creatively developing worldwide AR glasses. C.These virtual reality devices are properly opening up the commercial market soon. D.Tech companies will optimistically face the fact of smartphones’ being replaced. 8.What will the author tell us in the next paragraph? A.How to fully expand 5G coverage. B.How to effectively reduce 5G trials. C.How to nicely operate 5G hardware. D.How to widely construct 5G in big cities. Ⅱ. In today’s fastpaced and sometimes uncaring society, it can be challenging to find anything to lift your spirits when you feel sad. In spite of how bad things may appear, there are some things you can do to get happy and enjoy your day. 1.________ Get yourself an attitude of gratitude. For centuries, people over the world have recognized how powerful gratitude is when it comes to lifting one’s spirits. Frequently we are so caught up in what we lack that we fail to recognize all that we possess. Often, we are only reminded of the blessings present in our world when we meet someone worse off than we are or when those blessings are no longer a reality. 2.________ Keep a list of things for which you are grateful—in case you need to jog your memory. Brighten someone’s day. It may be you who are feeling the blues, but when you brighten someone else’s day, yours automatically becomes brighter. Smiles spread easily. 3.________ Get some fresh air. Fresh air refreshes the senses and makes you more likely to get up and do something rather than sit there in an unpleasant mood. 4.________ Even just walking in your flower or vegetable garden will do the trick. 5.________ Because the heart rate and breathing rate increase during exercise, a greater amount of oxygen is delivered to the body tissue. In addition to relieving stress, heightened physical activity will decrease the level of the stress hormone(荷尔蒙). As such, your mood can quickly change from a state of stress to one of joyfulness. A.Get some exercise. B.Be thankful for what you have. C.Here are some great ways to lift your spirits. D.Go for a walk with a friend or take a bike ride. E.Do what you can to start an outbreak of happy faces. F.This promotes the production of the body’s natural pain relievers. G.Organize cupboards, garages and other areas that have become untidy. 根据文章第三段中的“Then, after considering that his own dream of walking could be years away, he donated his $30,000 to Brecon’s cause.” 根据最后一段中的“They’ve promised to give the extra funds, about... to the Tree of Hope charity...” 故选A项。 根据第四段中的“Dan’s generosity received a great deal of attention, and contributions started pouring in...” 根据第四段中的“They’ve promised to give the extra funds, about $17,000, to the Tree of Hope charity, which helps sick children in the United Kingdom find specialized medical help.” The boy’s family had created a website with which to raise nearly $100,000 needed for a trip to the St. Louis Children’s Hospital, where treatment was offered that could help Brecon walk. The boy’s family had created a website; with which to raise nearly $100,000...是定语修饰a website; where引导非限制性定语从句,修饰the St. Louis Children’s Hospital。 根据第一段中的“From smart home security to... will be able to talk to each other at lightningfast speeds with reduced delay... But by comparison 5G promises gigabit(千兆) speeds.” 根据画线词后的“that is to say, it is a sign of time”可知,无人驾驶汽车是数字时代的标志和象征。 根据第三段中的“...but tech companies are joyfully betting that these devices will eventually replace our smartphones.” 1.C 解析:根据第一段中的“In spite of how bad things may appear, there are some things you can do to get happy and enjoy your day.” 2.B 解析:根据本段的主旨句“Get yourself an attitude of gratitude.” 4.D 解析:根据设空处后的“Even just walking in your flower or vegetable garden will do the trick.” 故选A项。
