You’ll find that some festivals are celebrated by an entire country, while others may be known only to a single city or region, but either way festivals play an important role in a certain culture. Just enjoy them! ‎ ‎★Tomatina — Bunol, Spain ‎ Every last Wednesday in August, the town of Bunol is filled with tons of tomatoes in the world’s biggest food flight. Many people wear goggles (护目镜) during this hour of great fun, as the town becomes a red river.‎ ‎★ Boryeong Mud Festival—Boryeong, South Korea For two weeks in July, millions gather in Boryeong to experience the grey pools and slides. What began as a way to help sell the region’s mineral-rich mud has turned into a festive party with music and fireworks. The mud is usually only available in cosmetic products (化妆品), but here you can cake yourself in grey as you want.‎ ‎★ Holi—India Holi, the Festival of Colors, is a Hindu celebration full of joy and one of India’s most important holidays. During the day of the last full moon of the lunar month, usually late February or early March, the air is full of brightly colored powder (粉末). The festival is celebrated differently throughout the country, with bonfires and music, but the cheerful spirit is common among Hindu people around the world.‎ ‎★ International Pillow Fight Day—Worldwide ‎ Tens of thousands of people took part in the 4th annual International Pillow Fight Day on April 2, 2013. From London to Vancouver to many other cities, the festival is held in more than 100 countries. So just bring a soft pillow in early April, and watch feathers fly. ‎ 21. According to the author, _______________.‎ A. there should be festivals celebrated by the whole world B. festivals give people the best chances to experience a culture C. it’s usually hard for people to accept a different culture D. festivals in a certain culture often change with time 22. We learn from the passage that _______________.‎ A. the town of Bunol in Spain is on a river B. cosmetic products sell well on Boryeong Mud Festival C. International Pillow Fight Day has a short history D. Holi is the greatest festival for Indian people 23. The passage is most likely to be found in __________.‎ A. a personal diary B. a technical report C. a geography book D. a travel magazine B Special Bridges Help Animals Cross the Road ‎ — Reported by Sheila Carrick Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side.‎ Most people know this joke. But recently, some people have been much more worried about how the grizzly bear(灰熊) and mountain lion can cross the road.‎ ‎“Millions of animals die each year on US roads, ” the Federal Highway Administration reports. In fact, only about 80 ocelots, an endangered wild cat, exist in the US today. The main reason? Road kill.‎ ‎“Ecopassages” may help animals cross the road without being hit by cars. They are paths both over and under roads. “These ecopassages can be extremely useful, so that wildlife can avoid ‎ road accidents,” said Jodi Hilty of the Wildlife Protection Society.‎ But do animals actually use the ecopassages? The answer is yes. Paul Beier of Northern Arizona University found foot marks left by mountain lions on an ecopassage that went under a highway. This showed that the lions used the passage.‎ Builders of ecopassages try to make them look like a natural part of an area by planting trees on and around them. Animals seem to be catching on. Animals as different as salamanders(火蜥蜴) and grizzly bears are using the bridges and underpasses.‎ The next time you visit a park or drive through an area with a lot of wildlife, look around. You might see an animal overpass!‎ 21. The writer uses the example of “ocelots” to show that ________.‎ A. wild animals have become more dangerous B. the driving conditions have improved greatly C. the measure for projecting wildlife fails to work D. an increasing number of animals are killed in road accidents 22. From the news story, we know an ecopassage is ________.‎ A. an underground path for cars B. a fence built for the safety of the area C. a bridge for animals to get over a river D. a path for animals to cross the road 23. When the writer says that “Animals seem to be catching on”, he means ________.‎ A. animals begin to realize the dangers on the road B. animals begin to learn to use ecopassages C. animals are crossing the road in groups D. animals are increasing in number 24. The writer asks visitors and drivers to look around when traveling because________‎ A. wild animals may attack cars B. wild animals may jam the road C. they may see wild animals in the park D. they may see wild animals on ecopassages C Helen Thayer, one of the greatest explorers of the 20th century, loves challenges. She says,“ I like to see what’s on the other side of the hill.” She has gone almost everywhere to do that. ‎ In 1988,at the age of 50,she became the first woman to travel alone to the North Pole. She pulled her own sled (雪橇) piled with 160 pounds of supplies, and during her trip no one brought her fresh supplies. Accompanied only by her dog Charlie, she survived cold weather and meetings with polar bears. In fact, Charlie saved her life when one of them attacked her. Near the end of her trip, a forceful wind blew away the majority of her supplies. The last week of the trip, she survived on a handful of nuts and a little water each day.‎ Helen goes to challenging places not only for adventure, but also for education. Before her Arctic journey, she started a website called Adventure Classroom. On the site, she shares her adventures in order to motivate (激发) students. She explains, “ Although kids often see the world in a negative way, without hope for their future,we work to inspire them to set goals, plan for success and never give up...”‎ Helen grew up in New Zealand. Her parents were athletes and mountain climbers. Following her parents’ example, she climbed her first mountain at 9. Later, she climbed the highest mountains in North and South America, the former USSR and New Zealand.‎ In 1996,she took on another challenge--the Sahara Desert. She and her husband,Bill, walked 2,400 miles across it!In 2001,she and Bill traveled on foot from west to east through the Gobi Desert in Mongolia. They hope to travel in mainland China into Sichuan and Tibet to study pandas this year.‎ Helen plans to continue taking trips. She’ll use her explorations, writing, photography and environmental work to create programs for her Adventure Classroom website. She wants to inspire her students never to stop facing challenges!‎ 28. We learn from Paragraph 2 that ________.‎ A. Helen Thayer is the first person to reach the North Pole B. Helen Thayer ate nothing during the last week of her trip C. Charlie prevented Helen being attacked by polar bears D. Helen Thayer traveled to the North Pole together with her husband ‎29. Why does Helen travel to different places worldwide?‎ A. For education and adventure B. For fun. C. For money. D. For fame.‎ 30. Which is the best title for the text?‎ A. The Woman Who Loves Adventure B. A Famous Woman C. A Woman Mountain Climber D. The Owner of Adventure Classroom 31. Which of the following places has Helen not visited yet?‎ A. The North Pole B. The Sahara Desert C. The Gobi Desert D. Sichuan and Tibet D The NBA has a new rule this season. It’s called “zero tolerance”------ NBA referees(裁判)not letting players complain too long or too loudly about a referee’s call. A player who does can be given a technical foul(犯规). Two technical fouls and the player is out of the game. ‎ The players don’t like the new rule and want the NBA to change it. They think it’s only natural to get upset during a close, hard-fought game if a call goes against you.‎ But I like the new rule and wish other sports would follow the NBA’s example. Wouldn't it be more enjoyable if football, soccer and tennis players stopped arguing the calls and just played the game?‎ The biggest reason I like the new rule is that it sets a good example for younger athletes. When kids (and coaches and parents) see professionals such as Rasheed Wallace of the Detroit Pistons shouting at the refs (referees) and arguing every call, they think it’s okay to do the same. They think it’s part of the game.‎ But shouting at refs and arguing calls should never be part of kids’ games. Kids should be taught to forget about the ref’s calls and focus on improving their skills and playing their best. All ‎ athletes need to learn that you control only one thing in a game, and that's your own performance. You can’t control what the other players or coaches do. And you certainly can’t control the calls the referees make.‎ Finally, everyone from NBA all-stars to 8-year-olds should remember that being a basketball referee is a tough job. The ref has to make dozens of instant calls. No hesitation. No second chances. Even the best referees can not be always accurate. If the players had to wear a whistle(裁判哨) and call a few games, there wouldn’t be as many complaints about the “zero-tolerance” rule.‎ 21. According to the author, what can an athlete control during the match?‎ A. the match rules. B. his own performance. C. the calls from the referees. D. the final score of the match.‎ 22. Which word can replace the underlined word “tough”?‎ A. demanding. B. tolerant C. rough . D. well-paid 23. ‎ In the author’s view, which of the following is the best way to reduce the complaints about the ref or the new rule?‎ A. Try to improve the skills at communication. B. Concentrate one’s attention onto his own hobbies. C. Try to play the part of referees in some games by themselves. D. Don’t mind other business but one’s own benefits.‎ 24. ‎  Which word can suitably describe the author’s attitude towards the NBA’s new rule?‎ A. approval. B. objection C. hesitation. D. dislike 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎      Weight loss is a hard topic.
