I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. Then an old woman said, “Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I' m eighty -seven years old. Can I give you a hug? ” I 春晖学校高三英语 2 laughed and enthusiastically responded, “Of course you may.” “Why are you in college at such a young ,innocent age?” I asked. She jokingly replied, “I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel.” I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. “I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one. ” she told me. After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milk shake. We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always listening to this “ time machine ” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me. At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I'll never forget what she taught us. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her cards on the floor. Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, “I'm sorry I'm so nervous. I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know. ” “ There are only three secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success.” “You have to laugh and find humor every day. ” “You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. ” “There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change.” At the year's end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years before. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral to memorize the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be. Remember, growing older is unchangeable, growing up is optional. 21. According to the passage, the old lady goes to the college to __________. How to Make Your Life Meaningful C. Never Give up Your Dreams D. Be Yourself B The slavery drama “12 Years a Slave” won the Academy Award for best picture on Sunday, making history as the first movie from a black director to win the film industry's highest honor in 86 years of the Oscars. Can anyone tell me your ideas about this movie? —— Great Martin “12 Years a Slave is a surprisingly underwhelming movie. It is more of a string of picture about several heartless and evil white men(and women)who are just mean without the motivation of running a plantation on their minds. There is very little character development and most of the film relies on what the audience already knows and feels about slavery. ”—— Gemini Jef “Never have I been stunned into an emotional silence after watching a film in the theater. I ’ ve come out of films before thinking ‘My god, that was unbelievable ’, like when I saw The Lord of the Rings for the first time, but this film just hits you on another level entirely. You sit there after it ’s over, wondering if what you’d just experienced was real. The day after, you feel the same. ”—— Paul Johnson “This movie is just an average movie about slavery. Are you kidding me, segregation movies are a dime a dozen and this movie beat out Gravity for Golden Globes ? Gravity has never been done before. 12 Years a Slave I watched once and will never watch again. I watched Gravity 5 times and still love it. ” —— Dominionator “This movie was realistic and engaging at every second. Even the dramatic pauses were worthwhile and definitely not a waste of time. The script inferred and hinted at events rather than just plain saying them, and that was genius. Outstanding photography, amazing special effects and the acting is top notch. There were a few people that walked out during some scenes. What a shame! ”—— Apols 24. The main purpose of Great Martin ’s writing is __________ . A. to give a brief introduction of the movie B. to share his own opinions with others C. to invite answers to his question D. to explain why he asks the question 25. It doesn ’t deserve such high praise. D. It amazes the audience with its special effects. The huge cargo jet had been heading for McConnell air force base in Wichita, but instead touched down at nearby Colonel James Jabara airport. No one was injured and no property damage occurred when the plane landed. There had been questions as to whether the aircraft would be able to depart from the much shorter runway at Jabara. The Dreamlifter normally needs a runway of 2,780m (9,119ft) to get into the air at maximum weight; 春晖学校高三英语 3 Jabara’s runway is only 1,860m long. A tug ( 牵引车 ) was sent to the airport to turn around the huge cargo plane. Brad Christopher of the Wichita Airport Authority told the Associated Press news agency that the company operating the aircraft had assured(使确信 ) us they’ve run all the engineering calculation and performance and the aircraft is very safe for a normal departure at its present weight and conditions here. The Dreamlifter, which landed at Jabara on Wednesday evening, is a modified 747-400 passenger aeroplane, which can carry more cargo than any aeroplane in the world, according to Boeing. D Nothing could be more useful than the Web, could it? You can search for anything you want and receive lots of different answers. But what if you had a device that was tailored to your specific needs, and that information on the Internet without you even needing to look for it? Well, that ’ s where apps(applications应用程序 ) come in. And in the West, where apps have been around since mid-2008, there are plenty of people who say that their favorite app, rather than the Web, has become the handiest tool in their everyday lives. There ’ s an app for everything: whether you want an alarm that analyzes your sleep patterns and wakes you in your lightest sleep stage or a restaurant guide that will help you work out the closest place to get the best meal. There is also a host of games apps to while away the hours, although these have proved far less popular than “ lifestyle ” apps, according to Lance Stewart — creator of an app named Tube Exits that calculates which carriage you should board in order to arrive at the nearest platform exit on the London Underground. A GPS( Global Positioning System) app is just one example of an application that makes everyday tasks significantly easier. If you ’ re trying to go somewhere you ’ ve never been before, forget your crumpled( 褶皱的 ) paper map. The GPS software will work out, and display your location on a digital map and plot the route you need to take once you key your desired destination. 32. The purpose of the first paragraph is to _______ A. raise the question and introduce the following passage. B. give us a clear picture of the apps we ’ re using. B. board the proper train you need. C. get on the train on time without delay. D. locate the right station of London Underground. 35. The example of the GPS app in the last paragraph is to show that___________ A. the GPS app plays a very important role in our daily life. B. the GPS app is the most popular one among people. C. the paper maps are no longer important and popular. D. some apps change our way of life and make life easier. 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分。 请将答案填写在 II 卷上。 ) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Guide for teenagers The teenage year can be tough, and it ’s normal to feel sad every now and then.
