So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me £12.” Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket. “Come into the office, Madam,” he said politely. “I’ll just check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd.” The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right, as Harry soon discovered. There was no sailing on May 22nd. How could he have made such a careless mistake? He shouldn’t have sold her a ticket for that day. Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child. “You look sun burnt,” he said to her. “Did you have a nice holiday in Jersey?” “Yes,” she answered, shyly. “The beach was lovely. And I can swim too!” “That’s fine,” said Harry. “My little girl can’t swim a bit yet .Of course, she’s only three…” “I’m four,” the child said proudly. “I’ll be four and a half.” Harry turned to the mother. “I remember your ticket, Madam,” he said. “But you didn’t get one for your daughter, did you?” “Er, well—” the woman looked at the child. “I mean… she hasn’t started school yet. She’s only four.” “A four-year-old child must have a ticket, Madam. A child’s return ticket to Jersey costs …let me see…£13.50. So if the railway pays your hotel, you will owe £1.50. One of the budgets would cut all money to the Institute of Museum and Library services and libraries across the United States. However, as far as I'm concerned, we need to save our libraries. Libraries provide books and after-school programs for children. They encourage literacy (识字) with summer programs. They help inspire a life-time love of learning and reading in children of all ages. Without them, where will kids with no Internet at home do their homework? Where will kids have a place to study or borrow books after school? Therefore, we need libraries for our kids. We need them so that kids can grow up with a place, other than school , where learning and exploration is encouraged. For adults, libraries serve as a place where they can use the Internet to apply for jobs, get job training, early voting centers as well as book clubs to help make new friends. It can also serve as a place to pick up a book and learn something new. What’s more, they can also borrow a book and get away from it all. Libraries save our information for the next generation. When we live in an age of alternative (选择性的)facts, where science is ignored in favor of personal feelings, we need libraries now more than ever. We need them to educate ourselves on the facts and hold the government responsible for them. We need them to have strong public participation. If you agree with me,you shouldn’t be silent on this issue. You can write or call directly to tell the president to save our libraries. You can also write to both your state Senators ( 参 议 员 )and your district representative. If you do not know who they are, you can find out here. Let them know this is a beneficial issue because all people use public libraries in their daily life. 5. The author thinks that Trump’s decision about his budget is . A. difficult B. practical C. personal D. wrong 6. Unlike kids, adults use libraries to . A. surf the Internet B. borrow some books C. do social activities D. explore the world 7. Which statement about libraries does the author agree with? A. Libraries play a more important role nowadays. B. Information can be stored in libraries forever. C. Government needs libraries more than before. D. Science should be learned in our libraries. 8. What is the author's purpose of writing the last paragraph? A. To call on us to disagree with the government’s decision. B. To call on us to fight with the American president. C. To encourage us to talk about the issue. D. To persuade us to agree with his viewpoints. D Do you have trouble trying to create the next big idea? Sometimes the answer isn’t to just force an idea out of your mind. Instead, you might want to try sitting back, relaxing and letting your mind wander. Yes, you heard that correctly. If you are in need of a new idea, try daydreaming. Researchers from the university of California, Santa Barbara, found an association between daydreaming and creative problem-solving. Their study includes having participants first do an “unusual-use task”. They had to try to come up with as many different ways to use an object as they could. Then, the participants chose to do one of the following four things before doing the “unusual-use task” again: complete a difficult task; complete an easy task; take a 12-minute break; or skip the 12-minute break and move right on to the task exercise again. Surprisingly, the group that performed best was the one that completed the easy task. Many participants reported that they were daydreaming while performing the easy task. So the researchers believed that this daydreaming might have helped unlock their creativity. But how could daydreaming help the brain come up with creative ways? The answer is something known as “unconscious thought”. Even when you are not actively working to solve a problem, it is still in the back of your mind. Your brain is still thinking about the problem, but in a much more subtle (不易察觉的) way. When you daydream, your mind is allowed to think in ways it normally would not. Because it is free of control, it can create completely new and out-of-the-box ideas. Great ideas never come easily, but that does not mean you always have to work hard to get them. Feel free to do what you want and let your mind wander. 5. The “unusual-use task” in Paragraph 2 means that participants . A. complete an easy task B. complete a very difficult task C. take a 12-minute break D. think of various ways to use an object 6. Why did the participants who completed the easy task perform best? A. They were not actively working to solve the easy task. B. They daydreamed and it helped them be more creative. C. They were daydreaming while performing the difficult task. D. They skipped the 12-minute break to complete the task again. 7. What does the underlined phrase “unconscious thought” in Paragraph 5 mean? A. Your brain wander in a subtle way within your control. B. Your brain knows clearly what you’re thinking and doing. C. Your brain is thinking about a problem outside of your awareness. D. Your brain refuses to receive any information from the outside world. 8. The passage mainly wants to tell us that . A. brainstorming is important to creative ideas B. daydreaming is a way to improve creativity C. problem-solving skills are important in our lives D. the more we exercise brains, the more ideas we’ll get 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,共 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 People who seem to have all the luck are not usually blessed by a large amount of good fortune.
