故选 A。 Spend a sunny day exploring these natural cave pools filled with cool water that springs from the ground below and the thick palm forests that surround them.(在一个阳光明媚的日子里,探索这些充满清凉泉 水的天然洞穴池,泉水从地下涌出,周围是茂密的棕榈树森林。) If you want to meet a real movie star while also taking in the sun, head to the Gulf shores of Clearwater, Florida.(如果你想 见到一位真正的电影明星,同时又想晒晒太阳,那就去佛罗里达的克利尔沃特湾海岸吧。) D。 B Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment. My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table. I don’t only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you.” When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be here. But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all. I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being. 4. Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule? A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated. B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working. C. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better. D. Move an object out of the way before it trips someone. 5. The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to ______. A. keep her appointment with the eye doctor B. meet her father who was already an old man C. join in the holiday celebration of the company D. finish her work before the deadline approached 6. The underlined word “foregone” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______. A. abandoned B. lacked C. avoided D. taken 7. What is the best title for the passage? A. To Keep Emotional Well-being B. To Prevent “If Only” Moments C. To Follow the Most Useful Rule D. To Achieve the Peace of Mind 【文章大意】这是一篇夹叙夹议的文章。 But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. B。 C I.M. Pei, whose modern designs and high-profile projects made him one of the best-known and most prolific architects of the 20th century, has died. He was 102. A spokesman for Pei’s New York architecture firm confirmed his death to the Associated Press. Pei, whose designs included a controversial renovation of Paris’ Louvre Museum and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, died overnight, his son Chien Chung Pei told the New York Times. Ieoh Ming Pei, the son of an outstanding banker in China, left his homeland in 1935, moving to the US and studying architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard. After teaching and working for the US government, he went to work for a New York developer in 1948 and started his own firm in 1955. The museums, municipal buildings, hotels, schools and other structures that Pei built around the world showed precision geometry(几何结构)and an abstract quality with much respect for light. They were composed of stone, steel and glass and, as with the Louvre, Pei often worked glass pyramids into his projects. The Louvre, parts of which date to the 12th century, proved to be Pei ’s most controversial work, starting with the fact that he was not French. After being chosen for the job by the then president, François Mitterrand, surrounded by much secrecy, Pei began by making a four-month study of the museum and French history. He created a futuristic( 极 其 现 代 的 ) 70ft-tall steel-framed, glass-walled pyramid as a grand entrance for the museum with three smaller pyramids nearby. It was a striking contrast to the existing Louvre structures in classic French style and was violently criticized by many French. Pei said the Louvre was undoubtedly the most difficult job of his career. He said he had wanted to create a modern space that did not detract ( 减 损 ) from the traditional part of the museum. “ Contemporary architects tend to impose modernity on something,” he said in a New York Times interview in 2008. “There is a certain concern for history but it’s not very deep. I understand that time has changed, we have evolved. But I don ’t want to forget the beginning. A lasting architecture has to have roots.” When Pei won the international Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1983, he used the $100,000 award to start a program for aspiring Chinese architects to study in the US. Even though he formally retired from his firm in 1990, Pei was still taking on projects in his late 80s, such as museums in Luxembourg, Qatar and his ancestral home of Suzhou. 8. What can we learn from the first three paragraphs? A. Pei is famous for traditional designs in architecture. B. Pei built the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. C. Pei set up his own firm with the help of a New York developer. D. Pei put the elements light and glass pyramids into the Louvre. 9. What is the French attitude towards Pei’s job of the Louvre? A. Positive. B. Neutral. C. Critical. D. Objective. 10. What is the purpose of Paragraph 5? A. To explain Pei’s idea about the Louvre innovation job. B. To list the modernity of the Louvre innovation. C. To show Pei’s love for traditional culture. D. To present Pei’s contributions to architecture in history. 11. Which of the following words can best describe Pei? A. Productive and stubborn. B. Generous and persistent. C. Hard-working and humorous. D. Tolerant and considerate. 根据原文第四段中“The Louvre, parts of which date to the 12th century, proved to be Pei’s most controversial work, starting with the fact that he was not French.”及该段末尾处“…and was violently criticized by many French.” 结合上一段的主题,本段中作者(记者)采访了贝聿铭这一关键问题,并引用了他的 原话“There is a certain concern for history but it’s not very deep. I understand that time has changed, we have evolved. But I don’t want to forget the beginning. A lasting architecture has to have roots.” B。 D Pigeons in London have a bad reputation. Some people call them flying rats. And many blame them for causing pollution with their droppings. But now the birds are being used to fight another kind of pollution in this city of 8.5 million. “The problem for air pollution is that it’s been largely ignored as an issue for a long time, ” says Andrea Lee, who works for the London-based environmental organization Client Earth. “People don’t realize how bad it is, and how it actually affects their health.” London’s poor air quality is linked to nearly 10,000 early deaths a year. Lee says, citing(引用)a report released by the city manager last year. If people were better informed about the pollution they’ re breathing, she says, they could pressure the government to do something about it. Nearby, on a windy hill in London’s Regent’s Park, an experiment is underway that could help—the first week of flights by the Pigeon Air Patrol. It all began when Pierre Duquesnoy, the director for DigitasLBi, a marketing firm, won a London Design Festival contest last year to show how a world problem could be solved using Twitter. Duquesnoy, from France, chose the problem of air pollution. “Basically, I realized how important the problem was,” he says. “But also I realized that most of the people around me didn ’ t know anything about it.” Duquesnoy says he wants to better measure pollution, while at the same time making the results accessible to the public through Twitter. “So”, he wondered, “how could we go across the city quickly collecting as much data as possible?” Drones were his first thought. But it’s illegal to fly them over London. “But pigeons can fly above London, right?” he says. “They live—actually, they are Londoners as well. So, yeah, I thought about using pigeons equipped with mobile apps. And we can use not just street pigeons, but racing pigeons, because they fly pretty quickly and pretty low.” So it might be time for Londoners to have more respect for their pigeons. The birds may just be helping to improve the quality of the city’s air. 12. What can we infer about London’s air quality from Paragraph 2? A. Londoners are very satisfied with it. B. The government is trying to improve it. C. Londoners should pay more attention to it. D. The government has done a lot to improve it. 13. Duquesnoy attended the London Design Festival to _________. A. entertain Londoners. B. solve a world problem. C. design a product for sale. D. protect animals like pigeons. 14. Why did Duquesnoy give up using drones to fly across London? A. Because they are too expensive. B. Because they fly too quickly. C. Because they are forbidden. D. Because they fly too high. 15. Which can be the best title for the text? A. Clean air in London. B. London’s dirty secret. C. London’s new pollution fighter. D. Causes of air pollution in London. 12. The birds may justbe helping to improve the quality of the citys air. I have been a teacher for some years.
