That depressing news comes as no surprise to healthcare professionals, who say that many kids and parents don’t recognize depression’s symptoms(症状). And if they do, it can be difficult or impossible to get help. This is no small problem; about 2 million teenagers experience clinical depression each year, an illness that can do harm to school performance and friendships and is a leading cause of teen suicide(自杀). The new report found that just 39 percent of teens with major depression got treatment. Here are three ways to make sure your child can get over the problem. Getting diagnosed(诊断). Last month, pediatricians(儿科医生) and family doctors were required to examine all teenagers for depression. Courtney Jones, a 17-year-old in Portland, Ore., said that the examination saved her life when she was 14. She didn’t recognize that her loss of confidence and sudden lack of interest in spending time with friends were warning signs. Symptoms of depression include frequent sadness, decreased interest in activities, and hopelessness. Finding help. It’s no surprise to healthcare professionals that families have a hard time finding mental-health services; there are only 7,418 child and adolescent psychiatrists(精神科医生) in the United States, or about 1 for every 10,000 kids. For now, the best first step is to be examined by a pediatrician or family doctor, and then go to a psychiatrist for treatment and perhaps medication. David Palmiter, a psychologist, suggests checking out local universities, which often run clinics, as well as community mental-health clinics. Paying for treatment. Paying for healthcare is a struggle these days, and mental-health services can be ever harder to cover. The report found that lack of health insurance coverage was the biggest barrier to getting help. Only 17.2 percent of teens without health insurance coverage were able to get treatment. However, there are still ways to find affordable mental-health care that you may not be aware of. In a word, you should establish a relationship with a doctor, give the doctor a chance to get to know your kid and help her or him get better. 26. What are the symptoms of depression for kids? a. committing suicide b. sudden lack of interest in staying with friends c. failing the school examinations d. frequently feeling upset e. feeling desperate for no good reason A. a, b, d B. b, c, e C. a, c, e D. b, d, e 27. The writer uses the case of Courtney Jones to prove that __________. A. kids with depression find it difficult to get treatment B. it’s necessary to examine all teenagers for depression C. many American kids are suffering from depression D. warning signs can help kids to find their problems 28. According to the writer, you’d better first have the kid examined by __________. A. a pediatrician or family doctor B. a psychiatrist or psychologist C. a psychiatrist or family doctor D. a pediatrician or psychiatrist 29. What’s the main reason why kids with depression do not get help according to the report? A. parents’ ignorance of the illness B. lack of psychiatrists for children C. lack of health insurance coverage D. difficulties in diagnosing depression 30. What’s the writing purpose of the passage? A. To teach kids to recognize depression’s symptoms. B. To explain the findings of a new report to people C. To help parents to have their kids get treatment. D. To arose the public’s attention to the problem B ☆☆ There are countless diet programs and weight loss systems available. The majority are from multi-million dollar companies. Do you really think these businesses achieved success with a one-time, fix-all diet plan? No, they count on having most people return on a recurring basis; hence the term "yo-yo dieting". A lot of diet plans can be very limiting. You are required to follow a certain meal plan, which may consist of certain foods. Some plans are more exact and restrictive than others. Some diet companies even supply you with the actual meals. This means even more revenue(收入) for these businesses. A well-balanced diet consists of carbohydrates that are low in sugar (they're sometimes referred to as "good carbs"), proteins, and fats. (Yes, fats are important, too.) Fortunately for you, a well-balanced diet is all that is needed to safely and effectively lose or maintain weight, depending upon your goals. By educating yourself and having the willpower and commitment to make the proper food choices, you'll be well on your way toward achieving your weight-loss goals. After all, in order for a diet to be really successful, it cannot be just a diet. You must develop and conform to(遵守) a lifestyle that revolves around smart food decisions. This doesn't mean that you can never enjoy certain things that you crave(渴望), at least from time to time. We can all enjoy such things, but moderation is the key. A week's worth of smart choices deserves a meal out at your favorite restaurant. It also gives you something to look forward to and enjoy when you are saying "no" to those office donuts all week long. Don't get me wrong. It isn't always going to be easy. But rarely does anything worth having come easily. Liking what you see in the mirror, and being fit and healthy are definitely worth working hard for. Anyone can achieve such goals. To break out the old Nike phrase – Just Do It. 31. The first paragraph mainly tells us ____________. A. there’re many kinds of diet plans or programs with different effects B. why so many diet plans can not help people to control weight C. the diet plans do not work and can only benefit the companies D. people can’t stick to the diet plans because they are dull 32. If you want to control weight safely and effectively, what you do NOT need is ____________. A. the diet plans from the big company B. a well-balanced diet C. the willpower and determination D. a lifestyle considering smart food choices 33. What’s the correct understanding of the underlined sentence? A. Once you have a big meal in the restaurant, your week’s effort will be in vain. B. If you can make smart food choices for a week, you can treat yourself to a favourite meal out. C. A week’s smart food choices itself, not a meal out, is a big reward for you. D. A week’s proper food at home is as attractive as a delicious meal outside. 34. What’s the correct attitude towards the food you like? A. Have some whenever you like. B. Eat much after a diet of a long time. C. Enjoy it once in a while but never too much. D. Never have it before you successfully lose weight. 35. The last paragraph is meant to ____________. A. conclude what’s the best way to control weight B. emphasize the reasons why people should diet C. predict the results of taking well-balanced food D. encourage people to take action in spite of difficulties C ☆☆☆☆ In people's minds, Beijing women are taller, bold, and uninhibited, while Shanghai women are smaller in figure, and always speak in a soft voice. The image of Beijing women is usually bigger than Shanghai women's. However, it turns out to be just the other way round after I have worked in Beijing for some time. Everybody goes Dutch in Shanghai; even at a grand party, but in Beijing it' s usually the men' s treat. And it is also impossible to invite a female friend who already has a boyfriend or a young married woman out, even if you promise to see her home that night, The conditions of the men in Beijing are no better at all. All their cellphones will ring one after another at 12 o'clock sharp at night. The voice on the other end is usually loud enough for anyone nearby to hear. "Where have you been? Do you remember that you've got a home? Now who's with you?" and these three sentences are usually the main parts of the call. Shanghai women could never understand this. If it' s a Shanghai woman who shouts in the phone, the Shanghai man on the other end must think that she is crazy (or drunk, perhaps). The Shanghainese go Dutch in life, and they appreciate the independence in both economic and love affairs. Many of my friend girls in Shanghai are office ladies with very high income. The tiredness of life cannot kill their pride in saying: "I don't depend on any men." Thus no men can command them, for example, to force them to come back home before 10 pm. Beijingers do not admire the Shanghai way of life, anyhow. How can a couple be addressed as "a couple" when they don't know where the other has been last night? They wondered. 36. The underlined word "uninhibited" in Paragraph One probably means ______. A. relaxed enough to do as they like B. very cautious about their behavior C. always doing what they are told to D. not having courage or confidence 37. By mentioning men paying bills for women in Beijing, the writer wants to show that ______. A. Beijing women are respected B. Beijing women lack independence C. Beijing men are generous D. Beijing men possess gentle manners 38. The conditions of Beijing men are no better because they ______. A. often stay out late at night B. have women call them at midnight C. are treated the same as Shanghai men D. enjoy no more freedom than the women 39. Shanghai women could never understand why ______. A. Beijing women behave like that B. Beijing men behave like that C. Shanghai men think so differently D. Shanghai women don' t copy Beijing women 40. Which of the following may be the title of the article? A. Lifestyle difference between Shanghai and Beijing. B. Physically strong may mean spiritually weak. C. Big Shanghai women and little Beijing women. D. Can a couple go Dutch in life? D ☆☆☆☆ We all enjoy the beautiful show of colors as leaves change each autumn. But did you ever wonder how and why this happens? To answer the question, first you have to understand what leaves are and what they do. Leaves are nature's food factories. Plants take water from the ground through their roots. And they take a gas called carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) from the air. Plants use sunlight to turn water and carbon dioxide into glucose (葡萄糖). Glucose is a kind of sugar. Plants use glucose as food for energy and as a building block for growing. The way plants turn water and carbon dioxide into sugar is called photosynthesis That means, "putting together with light". A chemical called chlorophyll (叶绿素) helps photosynthesis. Chlorophyll is what gives plants their green color. As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter. This is how trees "know" to begin getting ready for winter. During winter, there is not enough light or water for photosynthesis. Trees rest during this time and live off the food they stored during the summer. They begin to shut down their food-making factories. The green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves. As the bright green fades away, we begin to see yellow and orange leaves. Small amounts of these colors have been in the leaves all along. We just can't see them in the summer, because they are covered up by the green chlorophyll. The bright reds and yellows we see in leaves are made mostly in autumn. In some trees, like maples (枫树), glucose is caught in the leaves after photosynthesis stops. Sunlight and the cool nights of autumn turn this glucose into a red color. The brown color of trees like oaks (橡树) is made from waste left in the leaves. It is the mixture of all these things that makes the beautiful colors we enjoy during autumn. 41. Why do leaves change color in autumn? A. Because the green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves. B. Because the colors of yellow or red covered up by chlorophyll begin to show. C. Because some other substances in the leaves make most of the bright reds or yellows. D. All of the above. 42. Which of the following about chlorophyll is NOT true? A. Without it photosynthesis couldn’t happen. B. It is the reason why leaves have their green color. C. It turns the leaves red during autumn. D. It is a chemical that’s important for trees’ food making. 43. Which of the following is WRONG? A. In winter trees cannot produce any sugar they need as food. B. In winter trees do not consume sugar without chlorophyll. C. Trees can survive the winter with the food storage. D. In winter trees lack light or water for photosynthesis. 44. From the text we can see that photosynthesis _____. A. can produce glucose, which can provide energy for trees’ growth B. can happen whenever there is light and water C. is the process of putting sunlight together with chlorophyll D. doesn’t stop during the trees’ lifetime even in winter 45. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the passage? A. To explain the process of trees’ photosynthesis. B. To encourage readers to protect the environment. C. To analyze the reasons why leaves change colors. D. To help readers understand what leaves and trees are. E☆☆☆☆ When a handheld video game runs out of power, all you have to do is plug it in and charge it up. Within a few years, some of you might do the same thing with mom's car. Automobile (汽车) companies are developing vehicles that will plug in to electric sockets (插座), just like many laptops, digital cameras, cellphones and small video game players do. Called "plug-in hybrids (混合动力车)", these cars will get most of their power from electricity. Their drivers will rarely have to stop at gas stations. The technology is more than just cool. In our automobile-filled world, plug-in vehicles could reduce the amount of gasoline we use. That gas is made from crude oil (原油), which keeps rising in cost. Plus, driving around in these hybrids may even help the environment. Gas-burning cars produce a lot of carbon dioxide, a type of greenhouse gas. These gases stay in the atmosphere, where they trap (困住) heat and cause global warming. The first company-produced plug-in hybrids could hit the roads by 2010. But engineers still have a lot of work to do to make the technology practical and inexpensive. Batteries are the biggest challenge. In the plug-in-hybrid world, lithium-ion (锂离子) (Li-ion) batteries are getting the most attention. These batteries can store a large amount of energy in a small package, and they last a relatively long time between charges. Li-ion batteries are standard in laptops, cellphones, heart devices and other similar portable (便携的) devices. But because cars are so big and heavy, it would still require a suitcase-sized Li-ion battery to power about 12km of driving. What's more, the batteries are extremely expensive. "A car filled with batteries could go a long distance," says Ted Bohn, an electrical engineer in Chicago. "But it couldn't haul (拖拉) any people, and it would cost $100,000." So researchers need to figure out how to make batteries smaller and cheaper, among other questions. "The answers don't exist yet," Bohn says. "As a kid I thought someone someplace knows the answer to everything. All of these questions haven't been decided. That's what engineering is about ? making a guess, running tests and fine-tuning (微调) results." Choose the best answer: 46. The passage mainly talks about ____ of a new car. A. the batteries B. the speed C. the developing D. the appearance 47. Which is TRUE according to the passage? A. The ‘plug-in hybrids’ will use electricity completely as driving power. B. The new technology will contribute to the protection of our environment. C. The technology of using electricity as driving is quite mature now. D. The biggest challenge of the new technology is that it will cost us more money. 48. How does Bohn feel about the future of the new technology according to the last paragraph? A. Confident. B. Puzzled. C. Worried. D. Disappointed. 49. The new technology is facing the following problems EXCEPT that__________. A. the technology isn’t practical up to now B. the cost of the new technology is quite high C. the size of the batteries is too big at present D. the government won’t support the technology 50. Which of the following is NOT a reason why Li-ion batteries are highly valued? A. They can store a relatively large amount of energy. B. They are often used in hi-tech products. C. They are easy to be fastened to cars. D. They last a relatively long time after being charged. How do you do it?” 3.C 由本段中的 “If an employee was having a bad day,...” 4.D 由下文的 “...so one day I went up to Michael and asked him,.... You can' t be positive all the time. How do you do it?” 因此问了下面的问题, “You can' t be positive all the time. How do you do it?” 6.C 由 “each morning”可知,醒来并自己告诉自己。 take up 拿起,占去, 接受; make up 组成,编造; bring up 教育,提及,呕吐。 7.B 由下文的 “You can choose to be in a ...mood or be in a bad mood.” 8.B 由上文的 “You can choose to be in a...” 9. C 由上文的 “Each time something bad happens,.....or choose to learn from it.” 10.C 由下文的 “...,falling off 60 feet from a communications tower. After l8 hours of surgery,...” 12.A 由下文的 “The first thing that went through my mind was the well being of my soon-to-born daughter,...”可知。go through 穿过,经过;break through 突围,突破;look through 仔细检查; read through 仔细阅读。 14.C 由文中的 “...remembered I had two choices: I could choose to live or...” 17. for。 18. to。up to 一直到。 19. the。 20. began。 21. competition。 22. where。 23. which。 24. eating。 25. will take。 27. B. 推断题。由 Last month, pediatricians(儿科医生) and family doctors were required to examine all teenagers for depression. 28. A. 细节题。 This doesn't mean that you can never enjoy certain things that you crave(渴望), at least from time to time. We can all enjoy such things, but moderation is the key. 41.D。文章开头提出树叶在秋天变色的问题,在倒数第 2、3 段就此做了详细的回答,原 因一:叶绿素 “disappears from the leaves”;原因二:人们开始看见在夏天本来就存在但被叶 绿素覆盖的“yellow and orange” ;原因三:“Sunlight and the cool nights of autumn turn this glucose into a red color.” 42.C。 此题归纳了叶绿素的作用,作用一:文章第 4 段提到有助于光合作用,第 2、3 段 对光合作用的解释就是“turn water and carbon dioxide into glucose”;作用二:光合作用产生的 “glucose”就是树的“food”,其中“A chemical called chlorophyll (叶绿素)”起了很重要的作用,这 在文章前三段都有谈及;作用三:文章第 4 段讲到“Chlorophyll is what gives plants their green color”;唯有选项 C 没有谈到,不是叶绿素的作用,所以选择 C。 43 . B 。 文 章 第 5 段 开 头 就 说 “During winter, there is not enough light or water for photosynthesis.”树依靠的是“the food they stored during the summer”,关闭了“food-making factories”,就不再进行光合作用生成葡萄糖,但这并不意味着他们不再消耗任何糖份,这就 是选择 B 的原因。 44.A。文章第二段讲光合作用产生葡萄糖“as food for energy and as a building block for growing”,A 项正确。在冬天“there is not enough light or water for photosynthesis”,叶绿素消 褪,光合作用就停止了,所以排除 B、D 选项。 46.
