I wasn't too fond of the lecture courses of my last major. There were one hundred students in my general courses. After the second term, when I was considering whether or not to come back in the fall, I spent a lot of time on the Internet, and came across an American. Then I joined his team. And that's what I've been doing for the last four years. I worked on making roads, building houses, serving as a teacher assistant, and I worked as a camp officer in several projects in South Carolina and in Florida. It has been a great experience for me. And I almost learned more than what I could have in college. I didn't want to finish school, but I wasn't interested in my major anyway. I think this was better for me. After 1700 hours of service, I received 4750 dollars. I used that to pay the money that I borrowed from the bank and for what I need. Now when I come back to school this fall, I'll major in German education. After working with the kids, now I know I want to be a teacher later in my life.‎ 第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)‎ 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) ‎ 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。‎ A What if we could replace oil with a fuel which produced no pollution and which everybody had equal access to?The good news is that we can, in fact, we are swimming in it—literally. ‎ Hydrogen is one of the building blocks of the universe. Our own sun is basically, a big, dense cloud of the stuff. And hydrogen can be used to create electricity for power, heat and light.‎ The problem is that hydrogen is everywhere and nowhere at the same time. It does not exist as a material on its own, but is always part of something else. So it has to be separated before it can be used.‎ Most commercial hydrogen in use now is created from natural gas, As oil will start to run out in around the year 2030, it makes sense to produce as much hydrogen as possible as soon as we can. But natural gas supplies will also begin to run out soon after. Another source is needed.‎ Researchers are now using electricity to make water into hydrogen. Companies are working on the problem in their own areas. The first commercial hydrogen, “fuel cells”for computers and mobile phones have already come on to the market. Auto companies have also invested over US $2billion in the production of hydrogen fuelled cars.‎ The nations of a hydrogen fuelled planet would not fight over energy recourses. There would be a great reduction in pollution. The only byproduct of creating hydrogen is pure drinking water—something that is very scarce in many parts of the world. But that is not where the good news ends. Once the costs of producing hydrogen have been brought down, it will possibly provide power for a third of the Earth 's population that has no electricity.‎ And electricity creates wealth. In South Africa over the last decade there has been a large programme of electrification. Thanks to the programme, people do not have to spend their days looking firewood to burn for heat. And with electric light, they can work long into the night.‎ Some scientists see radical changes in the way the human race cooperates. Hydrogen creates clectricity, and is also created by it. With dual use fuel cells, everyone who consumes energy could also produce it. Late at night, a man drives home in London and connects his car into the “worldwide hydrogen web”, which it supplies with electricity. A few hours later, a man in Beijing uses that electricity to power the hydrogen cell in his car. Hydrogen could be the first democratic energy source.‎ Like all dreams of the future, it seems very far away. But the threat of war and terrorism in the Middle East has made governments and businesses more aware of the need to end oil dependency and spend more time and money on hydrogen resource. So maybe the threat of war is not a completely bad thing for the future of the human race.‎ 文章大意:本文主要讲述的是为了我们的资源可能会枯竭,但是我们可以使用新型的hydrogen能源作为我们的主要资源。 ‎ ‎21.What does the underlined word “it”in the last but one paragraph refer to?‎ A.wealth B.hydrogen C.electricity D.fuel 答案:C 推理题。 Some scientists see radical changes in the way the human race cooperates, Hydrogen creates electricity, and is also created by it. ‎ ‎22.What is the problem with using hydrogen as energy?‎ A.It has byproducts B.It has to be separated from other materials C.It will make energy too cheap D.It is too far away from us 答案:B 推理题。 The problem is that hydrogen is everywhere and nowhere at the same time. It was found that saying “thank you” strengthens relationships by causing the person expressing thanks to feel more responsible for the person who is being thanked.‎ To understand how expressing gratitude helps strengthen relationships, the ‎ researchers conducted three different studies.‎ In one study,137 college students completed a survey regarding how often they expressed gratitude to a friend or partner .Results showed that gratitude was positively linked with the person's perception(看法)of the relationship between him and his friend or partner.‎ In another study involving 218 college students, the expressers believed that expressing gratitude made the relationships become closer.‎ In the third study, 75 men and women were divided into four groups. Over a threeweek period, one group expressed gratitude to a friend;another thought grateful thoughts about a friend, while a third thought about daily activities and a fourth had positive interactions(互动)with a friend. Those who expressed gratitude reported stronger relationships at the end of the study than those in the other groups.‎ ‎ Gratitude, when expressed, strengthened relationships, according to the studies' lead author,Nathaniel Lambert .He said the findings make sense because when you express gratitude to someone, you are focusing on the good things that person has done for you. It makes you see them in a more positive light and helps you to focus on their good qualities.‎ Although the studies only looked at the people expressing gratitude,Lambert thought that those who are being thanked will often want to express their gratitude back, which helps form a harmonious(和谐的)atmosphere among people.‎ ‎25.Researchers at Florida State University believe that expressers of gratitude may ________.‎ A.receive better education B.care more about others C.know the benefits of saying “thank you”‎ D.know the benefits of being thanked 答案:B 细节理解题。由第二段的causing the person expressing thanks to feel more responsible for the person who is being thanked. ‎ ‎26.In the third study, why did researchers divide the participants into several groups?‎ A.To prove a conclusion.‎ B.To test a theory.‎ C.To compare research results.‎ D.To collect more information.‎ 答案:C 推理判断题。 ‎ ‎27.How many people were involved in the first two studies?‎ A.137. B.218.‎ C.75. ‎ ‎28.What would be the best title for the passage?‎ A.Saying “thank you” helps defeat your enemies B.Saying “thank you” to create a sweet atmosphere C.Simple “thank you”,high expectations D.Simple “thank you” has new benefits 答案:D 主旨大意题。 ‎ C When Gretchen Baxter gets home from work as a New York City book editor, she checks her cellphone at the door.“I think we are attached to these devices(装置)in a way that is not always positive,”says Baxter, who'd rather focus at home on her husband and 12yearold daughter.“It's there but we get crazy sometimes and we don't know where it should stop.”Americans are connected at unprecedented(前所未有的)levels—93% now use cellphones or wireless devices;onethird of those are “smartphones” that allow users to surf the Internet and check emails, among other things. The benefits are obvious:checking messages on the road, staying in touch with friends and family, efficiently using time once spent waiting around.‎ The downside:Often,we're effectively disconnecting from those in the same room.‎ That's why, despite all the technology that makes communicating easier than ever,2010 was the Year We Stopped Talking to One Another. From texting at dinner to posting on Facebook at work or checking emails while on a date, the connectivity revolution is creating a lot of divided attention. Many analysts say it's time to step back and reassess.‎ ‎“What we're going to see in the future is new opportunities for people to be connected like never before,”says Scott Campbell, assistant professor of communication studies at the University of Michigan, who studies the social implications(暗示)of using mobile devices.“It can be a good thing. But I also see the traditional social structure is getting somewhat torn apart.”‎ Sherry Turtle, director of the MIT Initiative on Technology and Self in Cambridge,Mass. wants to remind people that technology can be turned off.“Our human purpose is to really have connections with people,”she says.“We have to reclaim(收回)it. It's not going to happen naturally.”‎ ‎29.According to the first paragraph,Gretchen Baxter thinks ________.‎ A.cellphones are not always helpful B.we benefit a lot from the invention of cellphones C.using cellphones too much may be bad for health D.cellphones play an important role in her life 答案:A 细节理解题。 I think we are attached to these devices in a way that is not always positive,可知,Gretchen Baxter认为手机并非总是有益的。 ‎ ‎30.The underlined word “downside” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.‎ A.advantage B.weakness C.characteristic D.importance 答案:B 词义猜测题。 Often,we're effectively disconnecting from those in the same room,可知,与第二段相反,它谈到的是手机的不好的一面。故选B项。‎ ‎31.The main purpose of the passage is to tell readers that________.‎ A.something must be done for people to get a real connection with others B.cellphones may be replaced by new devices C.cellphones should be turned off on some occasions D.people should have more connections with others 答案:A 推理判断题。 ‎ D I'd always dreamed of exploring Africa, ever since I read my first Tarzan(《人猿泰山》)comic as a child. Finally, in 2004, to celebrate my 60th birthday, I went to Tanzania to experience a safari(东非游猎)and climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. Seated next to me on the flight was Tanzania's minister of water and wildlife development. We talked for thousands of miles, and he arranged me to visit a school. When I toured the school, I was shocked. The leaky(漏的)roofs turned the dirt floors into mud during the rainy season, and the walls couldn't keep out the heat, cold or bugs(小昆虫). The school was in need of all material goods, but the kids possessed great human spirit.‎ It broke my heart that these children had to struggle to survive, so I asked the headmaster what it would cost to feed them. As little as 20 cents per child per day, he told me. Immediately I got home, I founded Kids of Kilimanjaro. Since then we've grown to provide hot lunches for nearly 13,000 schoolchildren every day. The free lunch program has eased a major problem the youngsters face.‎ I know a good education could really make a difference in these children's lives. My parents always stressed the importance of education. I paid my own way through college in Tokyo by teaching English to students and businesspeople. After attending university I moved to San Francisco, when I was 25 years old. In 1978 I realized my American dream when I founded my own company. My success all started with a good education.‎ It's amazing that something as simple as a nutritious lunch can change and enrich so many lives. Giving young people a better, healthier life can inspire them to go all the way through college and lead a movement that transforms their country.‎ 文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。 ‎ ‎32.Why did the author go to Tanzania to celebrate his 60th birthday?‎ A.He was curious about what Africa was like.‎ B.He was concerned about the Africans' miserable life.‎ C.He wanted to get an idea of the area's wildlife.‎ D.He hoped to lead a movement that would transform his country.‎ 答案:A 推理判断题。 I'd always dreamed of exploring Africa及to celebrate my 60th birthday, I went to Tanzania to experience a safari可知,作者为了庆祝六十岁的生日去非洲是为了看一看非洲到底是什么样子。‎ ‎33.What is the main purpose of Kids of Kilimanjaro?‎ A.To make sure the African kids are mentally healthy.‎ B.To spread knowledge among the African kids.‎ C.To build new schools for the African kids.‎ D.To protect the African kids from hunger.‎ 答案:D 细节理解题。 D。‎ ‎34.What is the correct sequence of the following events?‎ a.“I” founded “my” first company.‎ b.“I” founded Kids of Kilimanjaro.‎ c.“I” read “my” first Tarzan comic.‎ d.“I” moved to San Francisco.‎ A.a, c, d, b B.a, d, c, b C.c, a, d, b D.c, d, a, b 答案:D 事件顺序题。 D。‎ ‎35.The author believes education is important because ________.‎ A.his parents always stressed the importance of education B.a good education contributes to his success C.he paid his own way through college by teaching English D.he's trying to realize his American dream ‎ 答案:B 细节理解题。 My success all started with a good education可得出正确答案B。 ‎ Ancient Rome was one of the world's most powerful empires more than 2,000 years ago.
