At first, I was very frightened, and I thought I could never learn how to drive a car. Driving a car frightened me because in my home country women never drive, but in the United States every woman has to know how to drive. My husband paid an instructor to teach me how to drive. After that, my husband practiced with me for a long time. My husband always told me that I had to learn. It was important to me and my family. However, I couldn’t get my license right away. I failed my driving test two times. After practicing for a long time, I decided to go for my third driving test. I had failed my first test because I was very nervous. Everybody encouraged me to continue practicing. Three weeks later, I decided to try it again, but I failed again. After that, I was very embarrassed(困窘旳), and I said I couldn’t get it, so I stopped practicing for a while. Not knowing how to drive was bad because I couldn’t do anything. I had two kids, my husband works, and I had to take care of everything. Driving was so necessary that I decided to try it again. And finally, that time, I passed the test. Now I have my license. I know how to drive, and it has changed my life in some important ways. Now I’m driving to the college, learning English and hoping I will get a good job in the future. 21. Why did the author think that she could never learn how to drive a car? A. Because she was not an American woman. B. Because she was afraid of a car or a bus. C. Because in her own country women never drive. D. Because her husband didn’t know how to teach her. 22. The underlined word “instructor” in the first paragraph probably means_______ . A. someone who teaches a special skill B. someone who teaches a sport skill C. someone who teaches in an American college D. the information telling you how to drive a car 23. How many persons in the author’s family are mentioned except the author herself? A. 2 B. 3 C. 4 D. 5 24. The passage mainly shows us that the author failed for quite a few times but she never gave up and________ . A. she succeeded in driving her car to send her two children B. she succeeded in driving to the college to get a good job C. she succeeded in driving to the college and learned English D. she succeeded in passing the driving test and got her license in the end 25. The best title of this passage should be “________”. A. My Driving License B. My Husband and I C. Passing the Test D. Never Give Up (B) Science Daily—Dutch ecologist Roxina Soler and her colleagues have discovered that subterranean (地下旳) and aboveground herbivorous (食草旳) insects can communicate with each other by using plants as telephones. Subterranean insects issue chemical warning signals through the leaves of the plant. This way, aboveground insects are warned that the plant is already “occupied”. Aboveground, leaf-eating insects prefer plants that have not yet been occupied by subterranean root-eating insects. Subterranean insects send out chemical signals through the leaves of the plant, which warn the aboveground insects about their presence. This messaging makes it possible for spatially-separated insects to avoid each other, so that they do not unintentionally compete for the same plant. In recent years it has been discovered that different types of aboveground insects develop slowly if they feed on plants that also have subterranean insects and vice versa It seems that a mechanism (机制) has developed through natural selection, which helps the subterranean and aboveground insects to communicate with each other. This avoids unnecessary competition. Through the “green telephone lines”, subterranean insects can also communicate with a third party, namely the natural enemy of caterpillars(毛虫). Parasitic wasps(寄生蜂) lay their eggs inside aboveground insects. The wasps also benefit from the signals sent by the leaves, as these help them find more insects for their eggs. The communication between subterranean and aboveground insects has only been studied in a few systems. It is still not clear how widespread this phenomenon is, say the researchers. 26. How do subterranean and aboveground insects communicate with each other? A. By sending signals through the leaves. B. By giving off particular smells. C. By making soft and beautiful sounds. D. By the signals sent by parasitic wasps. 27. After finding a plant occupied by root-eating insects, aboveground insects will usually________ . A. send out warning signals B. compete for the same plant C. choose to leave the plant D. fight with the root-eating insects 28. Aboveground insects will develop more quickly if their food plants________ . A. are often visited by parasitic wasps B. are not occupied by root-eating insects C. have more green leaves D. have more subterranean insects 29. What does the underlined part “a third party” in Paragraph 4 include? A. Aboveground insects. B. Root-eating insects. C. Caterpillars. D. Parasitic wasps. 30. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Communication between different insects B. How do animals avoid competition? C. Insects use plants as telephones D. When plants have subterranean residents 答案解析 1.【解析】选D. 2.【解析】选A. 3.【解析】选A. 考查虚拟语气.would rather后跟that从句要用虚拟语气,从how worried I was可知,此处表示与过去事实相反,用“had +过去分词”结构. 14.【解析】选C. . . my mother would rather I had gone there. 17.【解析】选A. 对过去发生情况旳否定推测,用couldn’t (can’t) have done表示. . .
