Anytime a doctor came with news of my progress, my wife would give me a big hug. Staring at my reports, he said in a low voice, “It doesn’t look like you’re going to make it. ”‎ Before I could ask him a question, my wife stood up, handed me my clothes, adjusted the tubes fastened to my body and said, “Let’s get out of here. This man is a risk to your health. ” As she helped me struggle to the door, the doctor came near us. “Stay back, ” demanded my wife. “Stay away from us. ”‎ As we walked together down the hall, the doctor attempted to catch up with us “Keep going,” said my wife, pushing the intravenous(静脉注射旳)stand. “We’re going to talk to someone who really knows what is going on. ” Then she held up her hand to the doctor. “Don’t come any closer to us. ”‎ The two of us moved as one. However, studies have found that children typically forget between one and three months’ worth of school learning during the summer months. Spelling and math abilities suffer the most, while reading is not really influenced by the time off. The most probable reason for this is that most children read at least occasionally outside of the classroom, whether newspapers, magazines, books, or video game guides. However, their math and spelling skills only get exercised in the school setting. ‎ The original purpose of summer vacations was to let farm children have time off to help work in the fields in the high growing season, but this reason is no longer valid since fewer kids actually work on farms today. Some cities in the United States, such as Los Angeles, have moved to a year-round school calendar, which may help reduce the ‎ academic decline that occurs during the long summer vacations. Most cities still use the normal nine and a half-month calendars. To improve skills and to maintain a good level of preparation, experts recommend trips to museums, summer camps, and visits to libraries to keep kids mentally active and interested throughout the summer.‎ There are other educational systems that provide vacations while still keeping students’ skills sharp(敏锐旳). For example, in Japan, students attend class for seven weeks continuously, followed by two weeks of vacation. This continues throughout the year. In Italy, students attend class six days per week, but finish at 1: 30 PM each day, so that school does not dominate their life the way that it does in America. ‎ Educational specialists fear that the three-month summer vacation stops the continuity of learning. Just as students become accustomed to new concepts in reading, writing, or critical thinking skills, they “shut down” for an extended period. When they go back to school after the long summer vacation, they take up to two months to return to their previous level of understanding. And so the debate continues: whether to continue the present vacations or to seek changes. ‎ ‎26. Spelling and math abilities suffer the most during the summer months because children ________ . ‎ A. take the summer vacation too seriously B. do little work of math or spelling C. don’t like spelling and math D. have to help work in the fields ‎27. What can be learned from the passage? ‎ A. Students read in summer vacations. ‎ B. Nowadays no children work on farms in summer vacations. ‎ C. The United States has cancelled summer vacations. ‎ D. The nine and a half-month calendars help improve skills. ‎ ‎28. What is one of the advantages of Japan’s and Italy’s educational systems? ‎ A. They provide students with shorter vacations every year. ‎ B. The students have more free time of their own to play. ‎ C. They offer vacations without affecting students’ skills. ‎ D. The students attend class for longer time every week. ‎ ‎29. What does the underlined phrase “shut down” in the last paragraph probably mean? ‎ A. Stop learning. ‎ B. Get sick. ‎ C. Go on vacation. ‎ D. Concentrate on their studies. ‎ ‎30. What is the best title for the passage? ‎ A. How to Spend Summer Vacations?‎ B. No More Summer Vacations. ‎ C. Summer Vacations: Change or Not D. New Educational Systems Needed ‎(C)‎ ‎[2011·鹰潭模拟]‎ You wake up in the morning, the day is beautiful and the plans for the day are what you have been looking forward to for a long time. Then the telephone rings, you say hello, and the drama starts. The person on the other end has a depressing tone in his voice as he starts to tell you how terrible his morning is and that there is nothing to look forward to. You are still in a wonderful mood? Impossible! ‎ Communicating with negative people can wash out your happiness. It may not change what you think, but communicating long enough with them will make you feel depressed for a moment or a long time. ‎ Life brings ups and downs, but some people are stuck in the wrong idea that life has no happiness to offer. They only feel glad when they make others feel bad. No wonder they can hardly win others’ pity or respect. ‎ When you communicate with positive people, your spirit stays happy and therefore more positive things are attracted. When the dagger(匕首) of a negative person is put in you,you feel the heavy feeling that all in all, brings you down. ‎ Sometimes we have no choice but to communicate with negative people. This could be a co-worker,or a relative. In this case, say what needs to be said as little as possible. Sometimes it feels good to let out your anger back to the negative ‎ person, but all this does is to lower you to that same negative level and they won’t feel ashamed of themselves about that. ‎ Negativity often affects happiness without even being realized. The negative words of another at the start of the day can cling to(附着) you throughout the rest of your day, which makes you feel bad and steals your happiness. Life is too short to feel negative. Stay positive and avoid negativity as much as possible. ‎ ‎31. The purpose of the first paragraph is to ________ . ‎ A. make a comparison B. offer an evidence C. introduce a topic D. describe a daily scene ‎32. How can negative people have effect on us? ‎ A. By influencing our emotion. ‎ B. By telling us the nature of life.‎ C. By changing our ways of thinking. ‎ D. By comparing their attitudes to life with ours. ‎ ‎33. Some negative people base their happiness on ________ . ‎ A. other people’s pity for them B. making other people unhappy C. building up a positive attitude D. other people’s respect for them ‎34. According to the passage, to reduce negative people’s influence on us,we are advised to ________ . ‎ A. change negative people’s attitudes to life B. show our dissatisfaction to negative people C. make negative people feel ashamed of themselves D. communicate with negative people as little as possible ‎35. What is the author’s attitude towards negative people? ‎ A. Favorable. B. Critical. ‎ C. Indifferent. D. Supportive. ‎ ‎(D)‎ ‎[2011·福州模拟]‎ You may feel it is difficult to make a choice standing in front of the produce section of your local supermarket. In one hand, you’re holding a traditionally grown Granny Smith apple. In your other hand, you have one that’s been organically grown. Both apples are firm, shiny and green. Both provide vitamins and fiber, and both are free of fat, sodium(钠) and cholesterol (胆固醇). ‎ The traditionally grown apple costs less and is a proven family favorite. But the organic apple has a label that says “USDA (the U. S. Department of Agriculture) Organic”. Does that mean it’s better? Safer? More nutritious? Several differences between organic and non-organic foods exist. Become a better informed consumer for your next trip to the supermarket.‎ The word “organic” refers to the way farmers grow and process products, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products and meat. Organic farming practices are designed to encourage soil and water protection and reduce pollution. Farmers who grow organic produce and meat don’t use traditional methods to fertilize, control weeds or prevent livestock(牲口) disease. ‎ Here are other differences between traditional farming and organic farming. ‎ Traditional farmers Organic farmers Apply chemical fertilizers to promote plant growth.‎ Apply natural fertilizers to feed soil and plants.‎ Apply insect poisons to reduce pests and disease.‎ Use beneficial insects and birds to reduce pests and disease.‎ Give animals antibiotics(抗生素), growth hormones(激素)and medicines to prevent disease and promote growth, housing.‎ Give animals organic food and allow them access to the outdoors. Use preventive measures—such as a balanced diet and clean housing—to help minimize disease.‎ ‎* Organic or not? Check the label. ‎ USDA has started an organic certification program that requires all organic foods to meet strict standards which regulate how such foods are grown, handled and processed. Any farmer or food manufacturer who labels and sells a product as organic must be USDA certified as meeting these standards. Only producers who sell less than $5, ‎000 a year in organic foods are exempt (免除) from this certification. ‎ If a food bears a USDA Organic label, it means it’s produced and processed according to the USDA standards. The seal is voluntary, but many organic producers use it. ‎ ‎36. What does the first paragraph want to tell us? ‎ A. It is difficult to tell organic food from traditional food. ‎ B. The organic food and the traditional food are both delicious. ‎ C. The organic food is better than the traditional food. ‎ D. Both organic food and traditional food contain much nutrition. ‎ ‎37. The main purpose of the passage is ________ . ‎ A. to promote the sales of organic food in supermarket B. to introduce two different ways of choosing food in supermarket ‎ C. to persuade people to think twice when purchasing traditional food D. to provide information about organic and traditional food for consumers ‎38. According to the passage, the traditionally grown apple ________ . ‎ A. costs less but tastes worse than an organic one B. doesn’t look the same as an organic one C. has proven itself acceptable by the family D. contains more fat, sodium and cholesterol ‎39. Which of the following methods belongs to organic farming? ‎ A. Using chemicals to kill insects and prevent disease. ‎ B. Using rotted plants as fertilizer to promote plant growth. ‎ C. Using growth hormones (激素) to speed up animals’ growth. ‎ D. Using insect poisons to reduce pests and disease. ‎ ‎40.
