He was obsessed with this desire—he ate, slept, and walked with one and only dream: to die, having accomplished every single thing he was able to accomplish. There were so many things he could do. He felt like the whole world could be his, __16__ he set his mind to it. He knew that his __17__ had no limits. He knew that he could accumulate __18__ that would dwarf (使相形见绌) that of ancient kings; he knew that he could __19__ books that would shake the minds of generations; he knew that he could __20__ things that would forever change the lives of millions of people. He lived, constantly feeling the power within—and that power knew no bounds. There was only one problem: having such a potential, but only one __21__, he had to make a choice. He had to decide where to __22__ all of his ability. Making that decision was extremely hard, for any __23__ meant cutting off some future achievements. In the meantime, he went to school, graduated, found a job, married, and __24__ children. And he spent every minute of his spare time trying to decide __25__ he should bring his potential into full play. When my parents bought the house, in 1982, they were only two years older than I am now. I tried to imagine myself in two years, ready to settle down and buy the house I'd still be living in almost 30 years later. It seemed ridiculous. On a practical level, there's no way I could afford to buy a house anytime soon. More importantly, I wouldn't want to. I'm not sure where I'll be living in two years, or what kind of job I'll have. And I don't think I'll be ready to settle down and stay in one place. So this is probably the generation gap that divides my friends and me from our parents. When our parents were our age, they'd gotten their education, chosen a career, and were starting to settle into responsible adult lives. My friends and I—“Generation Y”—still aren't sure what we want to do with our lives. Whatever we end up doing, we want to make sure we're happy doing it. We'd rather take risks first, try out different jobs, and move from one city to another until we find our favorite place. We'd rather spend our money on travel than put it in a savings account. This casual attitude toward responsibility has caused some critics to call my generation “arrogant”, “impatient”, and “overprotected”. Some of these complaints have a point. As children we were encouraged to succeed in school, but also to have fun. We grew up in a world full of technological innovation: cellphones, the Internet, instant messaging, and video games. Our parents looked to rise vertically (垂直地)—starting at the bottom of the ladder and slowly making their way to the top, on the same track, often for the same company. That doesn't apply to my generation. Because of that, it may take us longer than our parents to arrive at responsible, stable adulthood. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. In our desire to find satisfaction, we will work harder, strive for ways to keep life interesting, and gain a broader set of experiences and knowledge than our parents' generation did. be concerned about意为“为…… set down 写下。 look for 寻找;take in 欺骗,吸收; give up 放弃。 go through 经历;经受;go into 进入;look through 浏览;look into 调查。 add to “使(数量)增加;使(规模)扩大”。 make for 有利于,促成;focus on 集中于;devote to 献身于。 in case意为“以免,万一”;as if意为“好像”;in order that意为“为了”;only if意为“只有”。 on purpose 故意地。 你认为他是故意这样做的吗?at present 现在; at the end 在结束时; right away 立刻。 recover from 从…… It/This is the first/second…time that… 14.A a series of 一连串的。a great deal of与a large amount of意为“大量的”,均修饰不可数名词;C项本身有误,应为plenty of。 He looked closely into these eyes表示“仔细地看了看自己的眼睛”,所以选D项,用closely。 从文章第一段…I wandered through my parents' house, …I had a sudden, scary realization. …I tried to imagine myself in two years, ready to settle down and buy the house I'd still be living in almost 30 years later. It seemed ridiculous…More importantly, I wouldn't want to… So this is probably the generation gap that divides my friends and me from our parents. …settle into responsible adult lives.以及第五段This casual attitude toward responsibility… My friends and I—“Generation Y”—still aren't sure what we want to do with our lives…We'd rather take risks first, try out different jobs, and move from one city to another until we find our favorite place.
