初三阅读与表达专项练习及答案 1.阅读与表达(共8分,每小题2分) 阅读短文,根据其内容回答问题。 What is a hurricane (飓风)? You may already know that hurricanes are storms, they can cause devastating (毁灭性的) waves, wind, and rain. They happen during “Hurricane Season,” which is from June 1st until November 30th in the Atlantic Ocean and from May 15th until November 30th in the Pacific Ocean. Categories (类别) of Hurricanes There are five categories of hurricanes, which are based on wind speeds. The categories help people know how much damage (危害) a hurricane may cause because the greater the wind speed, the more dangerous the storm. For example, a Category 5 hurricane has winds over 155 miles per hour, they are strong enough to destroy the buildings along the shorelines completely. Hurricane Dangers When a hurricane happens together with heavy rainfall, there can be a devastating flood (洪水). The center of a hurricane is called the eye. While most of a hurricane has dangerously strong winds, the eye is actually a calm (平静的) area in the storm. When the eye of a hurricane passes over land, people might think that it’s over, but before long the wind and rain increase again as the second part of the hurricane moves through. Hurricane Safety tips There is no way to stop a hurricane or make it change direction, so if you ever find yourself in the path of a hurricane, be sure to remember the following safety tips. * Be sure you have a radio, batteries, fresh drinking water, and enough food. * Tell neighbors, friends, and family members your emergency (紧急的) plans. Tell them where you’ll go if you need to leave your home. * If you live near the ocean, leave your home and travel to a safe place. You could stay with a friend or a family member, in a hotel, or in an emergency shelter area. * Stay inside during the storm. You could be seriously injured (受伤的) if you go outside. 57. Are hurricanes storms? 58. Where do hurricanes happen? 59. What is the centre of a hurricane called? 60. What does the passage mainly talk about? 2.阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共10分,每小题2分) We need to be responsible for our environment. Being a frugal consumer(节俭的消费者) is one way to help. But, what exactly does that mean? Use It Up You can use things up instead of wasting them. Squeeze that last bit of toothpaste out of the rube. Use the last little piece of soap. Don’t throw away any bits of the biscuit at the bottom of the box. Wear It Out You do not always need to have new things. Suppose your sneakers have broken laces, but they still fit you. Repair them and wear them longer. You don’t have to have the latest iPhone until the old one doesn’t work any more. Then you can get a new one. Think twice before replacing something that still works. Make It Do When something you want is not on hand, look for something else that you already have to take its place. Suppose you are packing your lunch for tomorrow and want a butter sandwich. You are out of butter. Have a cheese sandwich instead so that you can use all of the cheese. Learn to fix broken boys instead of just throwing them away. With a little thought, you can make something do, instead of buying something new. Do Without Think about all those things that you would like to have. Do you really need them? How long will you really play with that new toy you saw on TV? Making the things that we want uses up our world’s resources(资源). And, getting rid of the things we don’t want any more takes up even more resources and space. 65. Do we need to be responsible for our environment? 66. How do we deal with the last little piece of soap? 67. When do we need to get a new iPhone? 68. What should we do when something we want is not on hand? 69. What does the writer want to tell us? 3.阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共10分,每小题2分) Chinatown is the name given to an area in the middle of London. It is just between Leicester Square and Shaftsbury Avenue. Gerrard Street is at the center and is the most important street in the area. There is a large Chinese community(社区) with a lot of Chinese restaurants, Chinese supermarkets and shops in this street. In the 1950s, it was a poor area and everything was very cheap. At the same time, the world rice market changed and thousands of farm workers in Hong Kong lost their jobs. They began arriving in London to look for work. They found jobs in the restaurants in this area. Many British people liked Chinese food, and the restaurants were popular. These restaurant workers often worked 17 hours a day and had no time to learn English. As more Chinese arrived, more shops and businesses grew up. Wives came and joined their husbands and children came and joined their fathers. The community grew, and Chinatown was born. In the 1970s and 1980s, British-born Chinese started to have a better education and this brought economic(经济的) success to the area. Many families moved out of Chinatown, and there was more space for businesses. Gerrard Street became a street only for visitors and was soon a popular place for tourists. Now everyone knows about London’s Chinatown. During the Chinese New Year, the streets are seen with flags and thousands of Chinese go into the streets. For most of the year, though, Londoners and tourists go there mainly for the food in the Chinese restaurants. The best restaurants are the ones where the Chinese eat. 65. Not many people live on these islands in the northwest of Scotland. The land is not good for farming. It’s only good for keeping sheep. The winters are long, cold, and wet. It’s hard to make a living on the Hebrides, but for a visitor, these islands can be very special. They’re not for everyone, however. Even summer days are cool and often windy. The water is too cold for swimming. There are no forests, and there are only a few trees and green fields. Instead of fields, there are just rocks and small plants. The hills, too, are just piles of rocks. Sometimes the view looks like pictures of the moon.[来源:学科网ZXXK] But there is beauty in this place. From the beach you can often see all the way to the rocky hills. From the hills you can see far out to other islands and the open ocean. The colors, too, are special. Blue is everywhere. It’s in the sky and in the ocean. It is in the tiny flowers that grow on the hills. In the spring there is also green in the hills. In the summer and fall the hills are more purple. Often the air is soft and gray with clouds and rain. On these islands you can forget about the rest of the world. The evenings are quiet. The restaurants close early, and there isn’t any nightlife. Visitors stay at a guest house or a Bed and Breakfast. This is the best way to learn about life on the islands. The islanders are often friendly, and they like to talk. If you want to meet islanders, you can also try the pubs(酒吧) or even the shops. People are in no hurry here. They like to chat about the weather or the fishing. There are also some tourist shops, but not many. They sell the usual tourist things. They also sell some beautiful clothes made of wool from the islands. Do not come to the Hebrides for shopping. For me it was the real house I ever lived in. The house had a big front yard with a swing(秋千) on it. Mary is my sister. We were both 8 years old at the time, but we weren’t twins. I in was January, and she in December. When it rained, we’d play there with neighborhood(街坊) kids, tell each other movies we’d been to, and sing rounds like “Row, Row, Row your Boat.” I remember laughing a lot at funny stories. Inside, of course, was the kitchen. I remember Mom putting newspapers on the kitchen table. In that room, I also remember the more pleasing aroma(芳香) of dinner being cooked. They say smell is the strongest sense memory. I can still smell the soup. Whatever the dinner was, the family would always eat it every night in the dining room when Dad was home. After dinner, Mary and I would help with the dishes: I’d wash, and she’d dry. There was a lot of singing going on, too. In the living room there was the piano. Mom often played “That Old Silver Moon” on it. Both Mary and I were taking piano lessons so there was much practicing. When the piano wasn’t playing, the radio was. The expression “Home Sweet Home,” to me, is the memory of voices and faces in that place on Thanksgiving and Christmas, of other family members—grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and the little dog named Inky. It’s not the rooms of that house I think of so much as what went on there. It’s always the people, the singing, laughing, and joking—and occasionally quarreling(吵架) and crying. Quite often, come to think of it. You go back and look at a house all these years later, and it seems so different now, much smaller than you remember. And you realize that if it’s still there at all, it has to be basically what it was. It’s not the brick(砖块), the shape, or size that matters. It’s us who have changed. 65. Are Mary and the writer twins? 66. Does the writer have a small family or a big family? 67. What did the writer usually do after dinner? 68. Why does the house look smaller to the writer now? 69. What’s in the writer’s memory? 8.阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共10分,每小题2分) On a very hot day, it is hard to know what to do to feel good. If you run around, you may feel sick in your stomach. However, if you just sit quietly and do nothing, you may feel bored. Are there things you can do to feel good and have fun when you’re hot? Perhaps playing in water is a good choice to make you cool down. Taking a cool bath or shower, or even washing toys in a pan of cool water can also make you feel good on a hot day. Besides, you can read stories or paint in front of a fan. You don’t need to move your body very much. These are just some of the cool things to do on a hot day. In addition, it’s important for you to drink water. On hot days, you can lose about 16 glasses of water in one day. If you feel thirsty, you are already short of water. So don’t wait for thirst before you start to drink. You should try to drink as much water as you lose every day. Mixing a little fruit juice into your water is a fun way to help you drink plenty of water. The food you eat also makes a difference in how you feel in the heat. Cold foods such as ice cream and drinks with some ice can cool down your bodies. Fruits and vegetables are also helpful to stay cool in hot weather. So plan a healthy menu for a hot day---one that doesn’t need any cooking. 65. Is it easy to know what to do to feel good on a hot day? 66. Is playing in water a good choice or a bad one? 67. How much water do we lose one day in hot weather? 68. What is a healthy menu for a hot day? 69. If the answer is “yes”, then try the world’s coldest hotel in Jukkasjarvi in the north of Sweden. But go in winter or all you’ll find is a pool of water, because the hotel melts every spring! The man who runs the ARTic Hall Hotel is Nils Yngve Bergqvist. He is also the man whose idea it was. He built his first hotel for an art show in 1991 and he designed the present hotel – over 200 metres square – himself. It took workmen about two months to put 1,000 tons of snow onto a wooden board. As the weather got colder, the snow froze and then they removed the board. The whole building and everything in it is made of snow — except for the wooden front door. There’s a theatre, a jazz club, a radio station and a large ice bar. As you can imagine, hot drinks are popular with the guests! The rooms have no doors, there is no furniture, no heating and everyone sleeps on…yes, that’s right…ice beds. But the 800 people who have stayed at the hotel this winter seem to like it. If you want to stay in one of the ice rooms, it will cost you about £30 a night. You won’t be very comfortable, but you will receive a survival certificate(生存能力证书)from the manager! When the winter is over, Nils holds his competition every year to predict the day that the hotel will fall. The person that guessed the day correctly last year received a large painting from an ARTic Hall show. Bergqvist’s ice hotels are becoming world– famous and he loves his work. He’s already excited about his next project — an ice hotel that will be bigger and better, he says. 65. Can you visit the ARTic Hall Hotel in summer? 66. Where is the ARTic Hall Hotel? 67. How much does the hotel cost for one night? 68. What will the manager do next? 69. Why is the ARTic Hall Hotel unusual? 10.阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共10分,每小题2分) Do you run away when you hear a bee buzzing? Many people do. A bee sting(叮咬)hurts and some people are allergic(过敏的)to bee venom. But did you know that bees are very important to humans? Honeybees do more than just make honey. They fly around and pollinate(授粉)flowers, plants and trees. Our fruits, nuts and vegetables depend on these pollinators. One third of America’s food supply is pollinated by the honeybee. Have you seen or heard a honeybee lately? Bees are strangely disappearing in many parts of the world. Most people don’t know about this problem. It is called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). Some North American beekeepers lost 80% of their hives(蜂巢)from 2006 to 2008. Bees in Italy and Australia are disappearing too. The disappearance of the honeybee is a serious problem. Can you imagine never eating another blueberry? Without honeybees food prices will go up sharply. The poorest people always suffer the worst when there is no enough food. This problem affects(影响)other foods besides fresh produce. Imagine losing your favorite ice cream!Haagen Daaz is a famous ice cream company. Many of their flavors(口味)depend on the hardworking honeybee. In 2008 Haagen Daaz began raising money for CCD. They also created a website called helpthehoneybee. com. Donating(捐款)money to research is the most important thing humans can do to save the honeybees. But not everyone has money to give away regularly. There are other ways to help. Spread the word, by telling your friends and family about the problem. Tell your teacher about the disappearing bees, too. Maybe your class can write a letter to the government. 65. People use them on trains and planes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms. Westlake College in Virginia is the 10th school across the country to join IBM ThinkPad University. ThinkPad University is a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Beginning this fall, Westlake College will give laptop computers to each new student. Within five years, each of the other 1,500 students at the college will receive a laptop, too. The laptops are part of a $ 10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops can surf to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees—anywhere at all! IBM started its ThinkPad program three years ago. The computer company hopes to double the number of schools using laptops to 20 in the near future. Because of many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more popular, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the laptops can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher education officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials also are testing laptop programs at other universities, too. At Westlake College, more than 60% of the teachers use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said, “Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we’re giving students a window. They can see everything all over the world. 65.
