‎ Unit 9 When was he born ?‎ I Analysis of teaching material This book is published by People’s Education Press and Thomson Learning , which is adapted from the original Go for it! Series by David Nunan. The Chinese edition uses task-based language teaching method to form a new kind of teaching pattern which contains the current topics, ability of communication and also language structure to make students to learn English easily.‎ Ⅱ Analysis of students ‎ The students in Grate 8 have familiared with listening and speaking type class ,but their abilities about reading could be improved .So we would teach them how to understand the article and key and difficult points.‎ Ⅲ Teaching goals ‎ A. Language goals: 1. words :born, well-known ,pianist, accordion, hum 2.Phrases: hum songs, difficult pieces of music ,at the age ‎ ‎ of four, start to do , take part in ,win the prize ,in one’s group ‎ ‎ 3.Sentences : a. Who's that? That's Li Yundi. b. When was he born? He was born in1982. c. He is a well -known Chinese pianist.‎ B. Communicative goals: To develop Ss’ reading ability and writing ability.‎ C . Virtue goals : a. Develop Ss’ learning interests. ‎ b. Stimulate Ss to learn from the famous people.‎ IV Key points and difficult points:‎ Key points :‎ a. words : born, well-known ,pianist, accordion, hum b. Phrases: hum songs, difficult pieces of music ,at the age of four, start to do , take part in ,win the prize ,in one’s group ‎ c. Sentences: 1. Who's that? That's Li Yundi. 2. When was he born? He was born in 1982. ‎ Difficult points:‎ How to use "when" questions and “be born” to ask sb sth V. Teaching methods:‎ In my opinion, the main instructional aims of learning English in Middle school is to develop the students’ abilities of listening ,speaking, reading, writing and their good sense of the English language . So in this lesson I’ll mainly use communicative approach(交际教学法),and Task-based language teaching(任务教学法).‎ VI Teaching procedure Step1. Warming up (5’ )‎ Game: Who is he/she?‎ Ask a student to come to the front, say some sentences about a famous person or ‎ one of the classmates, including his or her birth date, occupation, and so on. And ask other Ss to guess who he or she is talking about. Later, the student gives the answer and shows the pictures. ‎ Step2 Lead- in (5’ )‎ ‎ I will show some photos of famous people on the screen and ask some pairs of Ss to make dialogues one by one.‎ A: Who’s that?‎ B: That’s______. He is _______.‎ A: When was he born?‎ B: He was born in _____‎ ‎.‎ Step 3 New content (30’ )‎ ‎1. Listen to the tape and read the new words 2 times. First time, just listen to the pronunciation; the second time, let Ss follow the tape and read words. At last, read words loudly together.(5’)‎ ‎2. Then do some reading. We will hear of some famous people. Most of them started doing things when they were very young. And they became famous when they were young, too. Look at Activity 3a and read after the tape. (T: Now, let’s do some reading. We will learn some famous people. Most of them started doing things when they were very young. And they became famous when they were young, too. Please look at Activity ‎3a. Let’s read after the tape…)(5’)‎ ‎3. Ask Ss to find some key phrases and underline. Explain some key language points. (5’)‎ ‎1. hum songs and difficult pieces of music 哼唱歌曲和有难度的乐章 ‎2. start to do sth. 开始做某事 or we can say “start doing sth.” ‎ ‎3. at the age of four 在四岁时 ‎ ‎4. take part in 参加 5.win the prize 获奖 ‎4. Then say some sentences in Chinese, and ask Ss to put into English.(2’)‎ ‎1.我8岁时就开始踢足球。‎ ‎2.他们10岁时就开始学英语。‎ ‎5. Have Ss look at the chart. Ask Ss what they think the word “achievement ”means. Explain that it means the important thing each person did. Ask Ss to read the article again and fill in the chart. Later, check the answers. Then ask the whole class to read the article again.(3’)‎ ‎6. Groupwork – Interview(10’)‎ Ask Ss to work in groups of four. Each group chooses a reporter. The reporter interviews other group members about when they started doing these things ( learned to ride a bike, started learning English, started going to school, learned to write, and so on.)‎ ‎. (T: Well done. Let’s do an interview. I’d like you to work in groups of four, and each group chooses a reporter. The reporter should ask other group members about when they started doing these things. First, suppose I’m a reporter. ‎ ‎(Interview three Ss) Understand, now? It’s your turn to do this exercise. Stand up and do this exercise. When you finish, you can sit down. Now, groupwork, begin! -- When did you start learning English?‎ ‎--I started learning English when I was ten years old.)‎ Step4 Summary (3’ )‎ This class tells us some famous people and their stories .We also learn new knowledge. I’ll ask some Ss to retell the phrases we have leant, then I will summarize the sentence patterns to ends.( T: OK, let’s summarize. In this period, we have talked about some famous people. They all started doing things when they were very young. And finally they have made great success. So please remember: “You are never too young to start doing things.”(show on the screen). So much for today. )‎ Step 5 Homework (2’ )‎ ‎1. Write an experience of a famous person:‎ ‎ First, find out his or her material through magazines, Internet etc..‎ ‎ Then, write a composition of the person you admired according to 3a.‎ ‎2. Finish Section B. ‎ VII Reflection ‎ In class ,we learned a lot of words ,phrases, sentences. Maybe some students would feel hard to accepts so much knowledge , I will focus on them and make all students could step on my feet. ‎ ‎ ‎
